THE KENTUCKY STATESMAN WAS RETURNING FROM NEW YORK AND HAD JUST BEEN GREETED BY HIS FRIENDS—THE SCENE AT THE DEPOT—A SKETCH OF B18 CAREER. Without a minute's premonition of approach- ing dissolution, and while apparently in better health than for months past, Senator James B, Beck dropped dead inthe Baltimore and Po- tomac depot at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, The cause of death was fatty degeneration of the heart, an affection for which the Senator had been treated for several years past. In a general but somewhat vague way it had been lately understood by most of the Senator's friends that his health had improved considerably, and there wore, more especially in the Senate, in- numerable expressions of gratification at the rumor of supposititious improvement. In the Senator's family thinga were different; there it was known that Dr. Philip Wales, the family per ician, had grave doubts as to his patient's lease on life. The Senator had been urged by some of his friends to cross the water and visit his old home in Scotiand in the belief that the voyage, together with the absolute change attending the trip, would prove beneficial, Upon this proposition tbe physician pat an unqualified veto. He represented Mr. Beck's condition as such that he might die at any moment and that it would be better for him to remain at home, where his friends could at any moment minister to his wants. It was to satisfy him- self that Dr. Wales’ diagnosis of his case was a correct one that Mr. Beck went to New York to consult Dr. Loomis. The diagnosis was too BEXATOR BECK kind and attentive ready to LISTEN axD LEARY, and for their sake 2 forgivethe tnconside. rato fow, and repeat “ULL STAY WITH you." To her there was nothing alarming in her father's condition and she had no thought of the tragic occurrence that took place as soon asthe rail- road journey was ended, THE MEETING AT THE DEPOT. Mr. Rogers Clay, Senator Beck's private sec- retary, was at the depot to receive them, and in response to his query the Senator said he felt all right. Maj. Nicholson and Mr. Felix Me- Closkey, Gen. Spinola’s private | secretary, greeted him just as he passed through the gate- way leading to the platform exit, but there was no response. A muttered exclamation, in which something was said about “dizziness.” broke from the Senator's lips; then he threw up his hands and sank to the ground. He was re- moved on astretcher to the station master’s room and a doctor was sent for. Dr. Cham- berlain responded, but it was too late to do anything but mourn. James B, Beck was dead, THE NEWS AT THE CAPITOL. The news was telegraphed to the Capitol and the Senate, on motion of Senator Harris, at once adjourned. Many of the Senators and Representatives drove at once to the depot. Representative W. C. P. Breckinridge at once took charge of the body and had it removed to his own home, 2i9 East Cupitol street. The remains of Senator Beck have been placed in acasket and lie in the parlor. A large number of persons, including most of his senatorial colleagues. called during yesterday to view the body and tender their condolences to Mrs, Goodloe, the daughter of the dead Senator. A large number of telegrams of con- dolence were also received, HIS LAST DAYS IN THR SENATE. Senator Beck’s last conspicuous appearance in the Senate was nearly two years ago, when he delivered what many of his admirers re- garded as his greatest speech upon the tariff. Shortly after this the report spread about town that Senator Beck was seriously ill, a contirma- tion of which was found in his unaccustomed absence from his seat inthe chamber. It was then said that he had broken down from over- work and that a brief season of rest would re- store him to health again. But those of his friends who knew better .-lt that the great commoner would never to any marked degree resume his legislative duties again. This, however, was not his last appearance in public, although he remained in retirement for several months. After a time his strength returned and he was enabled by the excrcise | of great care to continue his correspondence ud to some exteut perform his duties asa Senator. He visited the Capitol occasionally. aud his advice was eagerly sought by his dem- ocratic colleagues on all matters of national or party interest. but it was felt that his days were numbered and that he might die at any moment, although, as Dr. Wales said, he might have lived for years had he been willing to abstain entirely from work and pass the remainder of his days in compara- tive quiet. The last time Senator Beck occupied his seat in the Senate wasou the day when San- ders and Power, the Montana republican con- testants, Were awarded seats in that body. A SKETCH OF KIS LIFE. James Burnie Beck was one of the few men born a foreiguer who have achieved distinction im American statesmanship. Born at Dum- friesshire, Scotland, February 13, 1822, he re. ceived his early classical education in his native | sso with no thought of leaving his Scottish ome. His parents emigrated to this country. however, when the future statesman was but sixteen years of age, settling at Lexington, Ky. Here young Beck entered the Transylvania University, from which he graduated iu 1546, when twenty-four years of age. He was am- bitious of distinction even at this early age, and as be was notalarge land owner the only avenue open to him was through the profession of the law, to which he devoted himself with Great assiduity for twenty years, In 1867 he was elected to the Fortieth Con- gress and re-elected three times, serving bis tull eight years in the lower house. He served on several committees, his most important work being upon the committees on recon- struction and appropriations, His service upon the latter committee led him to make a special study of the questions of finance and taxation. upon which he afterward became the acknowledged leader of his party in the Uni States Senate. He declined a fifth term asa member of the House of Representatives, and in May, 1 ‘a8 appointed a member of the commission to define the Maryland and Vi ginia boundaries. During the same year he was elected to the United States Senate asa democrat to succeed John W, Stevenson, demo- erat, and took his seat March 5, 1877. He re-elected in 1832 and again in 1483. Had he lived his third term in the Senate would have Ga ahs in 1895, ‘ossessed of a vigorous and well-trained intellect, with a natural bent for the study and consideration of financial questions, his eight years of service in the lower house and nearly fourteen years of service in the ate emi- nently fitted him for leadership upon all sub- jects of this kind. being foreign born, he was ineligible to the presidency. even if ithad been possible during the term of his public career for a southern man to be elected to that posi- tion. The Senate was the highest ottice to which he could attain and he gave his best en- deavors to make bimselfa useful and honorable legislator. ‘u personal appearance Senator Bec striking figure. Six feet three inches in height, he was broad shouldered and deep chested, @ very giant in physical proportions, His Jar; angular head was covered with a mass of da: hair, which had become quite gray before his death, Earnestness to intensity was the chief quality of his speech and manner, a character- istic that gave Lim more influence with his col- leagues than the graceful oratorical diction of some of his famous brother Senators, In the death of Mr. Beck the Senate of the United States has lost one of its foremost leaders, = a Inspector Byrnes and Victoria Woodhull Mrs. John Bidduiph Martin and Lady Cooke, sisters, now of London, England, formerly known as Victo: Woodhull and Tennie C. Juspector Byrnes yesterday said he made no apology and that he was willing to meet the stutemeuts in court. The women were very angry when told of Mr. Byrne's statement, and Mrs. Martin said persecution was driving her crazy.
