Proposed New Structures in Washington —A Committee to Report on Them, A joint meeting of the Senate and House committees on public buildings and grounds was held today for the first time in eight years, ‘The meeting was for the purpose of consider- ing the question of new buildings in this city for the Interior Department, the General Post Office and the question of the selection of a site for the new city post office. After a great deal of discussion on the subject the matter was referred to a joint sub- committee, which is to make a thorough investi- gation of the whole subject and report the results of its work to the full committees as soon as convenient. The joint sub- committee consists of Senators Morrill and Vest aud Representatives Clunie and Milliken. ‘They will start out on their tour of investiga- tion this afternoon, and will look at the several sites upon which it is proposed to erect these buildings. YOR THE INTERIOR DEPARTMENT, ‘The proposition has been advanced that a bill be passed purchasing the square bounded by 8th and 9th and E and F streets, and then make one building, which will stretch from 7th to 9th streets, using the present Post Office De- artment building as 4 sort of a corner stone. This enormous structure would then be turned over to the Interior Department, which, the committees agree, needs more room than it now has. That would leave the Fost Office Department homeless, but it is the intention of the joint committee’ to secure a square on which may be erected a building large enough for the department and the city post offiee for & century to come.
