The Distinguishea Soldier, Statesman aod Diplomat Passes Away. Gen. Robert Cumming Schenck died about 6 o'clock last evening of pneumonia at his rexi- dence, 1336 Massachusetts avenue, Thomas cit- cle. Gen. Schenck had not been in his usual health for the last couple of weeks, but bie condition was mot such as to occasion muck worry among his friends. A week ago he wae out calling with Mr. BH. Warder. By Tues- day, however, he had begun to fail slightly and Dr, Yarrow was summoned and found bim suffering from capillary bronchitis, Dr, O'Reilly and Dr. Loriui were called in consulta- ou, and Dr. Lorimi was engaged te be ie ZZ A constant attendance. When Dr. Yarrow called yesterday morning he found that Gen, Schenck condition had become really serious and that @ diphtheretic exudation bad commenced in the right side of the throat. The general ralbed | Somewhat toward noon, but from then on he fuied rapidly until the end came, It came quietly and peacefully, ana Gen. Scbenck's mund was clear until the very end. His daughters and Mrs, Bates aud Miss Sedgwick friends of the family, were at his deathbed, THE FUNERAL. Private services were held over the remains of Gen. Schenck this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. The remains will be taken this ev wing over the Pennsylvania road to Dayton, Ohio, for interment. The funeral party a the remains will compose Gen. Se three daughters, his nephew, Mr. Woodball Schenck, and his life-long (rieud, Hon, Samuel Craighead. A SKETCH OF BIS LIFE. Gen, Schenck was born in Franklin, Obie, October 4, 1809. He graduated at Miami uni- versity at the age of eighteen and afterward studied law with Thomas Corwin, He was @ member of the state legislature for two years j Aud Was &@ member of Congress trom 1843 to | 1851, serwany as a whig. He was then appointed iinister plenipotentiary to Brazil by President Fillmore. He officiated in that capacity for two years, distinguisiung himself as a diplomat by the way he negotiated treaties with various South American uations, When the war broke out he at once volunteered, and on May 17, 1561, was commissioned a brigadier general by President Lincoln. He served in the first batte bull Rua and afterwards in West Virginia under Gen.
