Journeymen Make a S @ Stand Against the New Regulations. IN SEVERAL BAKERIES THE MEN LEAVE—EFFORTS TO FILL THEIR PLACES WITH BALTIMORE MEN—MEETINGS HELD me sonar AT LABOR BALL. “Give us bread,” was an an appeal that went without an answer in many cases this morning, for there was not enough of that staff to satisfy the demand. Four of the large bakeries have had to practically shut down until the trouble between the shops and the journeymen bakers ‘has been settled one way or the other. The meeting of the journeymen Saturday | §' night at Edel’s hall has already borne fruit, for last night the bakers in three of the estab- lishments refused absolutely to sign their names to the obnoxious rules which the master bakers have placed on their walls, and as a result were told that they must sign or leave. They left. Schneider's, Stohiman’s and Schaeffer's had no bread mixed or kneaded last, | night. This morning all the drivers | at Schneider's except two were | told that their services were not needed. Two did report for duty and kept | their hold upon the reine and the bread baskets, The ory stand by the bakers. They are mem- bers of the baker's assembly. GETTING MEN FROM BALTIMORE TODAY. At Schneider's they said they had about fifteen men at the troughs and announced that things would goon as usual there. The new men were non-union workers from Baltimore. Stohl- mun sent over to Baltimore this morning for a force of men, but itis not yet known with what success, The bakers’ assembly, K. of L., have a com- mittee at work also in Bultimore to keep men from coming over to fill thewacant places. At some of the bakeries there has been no trouble and none is expected. At Havenner's establishment on C street the ovens are at work as usual, The men were told that they would not have to sign the rules and, it is said, they are satisfied, 4 MEETING THIS MORNING. This morning the journeymen bakers held an open meeting at their hall corner 4}¢ street and Pennsylvania avenue and the condition of affairs generally was discussed. A com- mittee was sent to each of the bakeries to confer with the bosses and to announce to them that they must not expect the rules to be signed by any one and to re- nest that they be taken down, The Connec- ticut pie bakery decline to accede to their de- mands, and the men, nine in all, including the apprentice boy, at once left their loaves. Tho manager said he would employ whomever he wished and would give away his pies rather than employ men who would not sign the rules, A CROWD OF “LOCKED-oUT” MEN, Labor hall was filled all day with men who are out of a job, They stood about in groups discussing the situation and awaiting the re- ports of the committees who were out to see the boss bakers, They told a Sram reporter that it is not a strike buta lock-out, for the bosses took the initiative. They are will- ing and anxious to work, but they are firm in their refusal to sign away what they consider their inherent rights at the demand of any boss, ‘They say they are willing to do a fair days work for a fair day’s pay, and are will- ing to let things go on as they were before the rules were put up. Sap appear confident of winning their point. ‘hey think they have wona great pee in getting Havenner to take down the rules, as that is one of the most in- fluential of the bakeries and, he will probably carry most of the bosses with him, RECEIVING THE NEWS. About noon today the committee that had been sent to Kohler’s bakery returned to the hall and reported that their demands had been grauted and the obnoxious rules were down at that place. The news was received with considerable satisfac- tion, A notice was printed this morning | | to say. in a German paper published in Balti- more to the effect that twenty men were wanted at once to go to work in Washington at $13 a week. This notice was read with a good deal of dissatisfaction by the bakers here. They do not expect mach trouble from it, however, as they say there are not evough of non-union men in Baltimore to hurt them, and the union men will of course stand by them. About 1 o'clock word reached the hall that Schaeffer had succeeded in getting four new men while one of his old ones, a union man, was still at work. It ie expected that he will leave, too, and if not his case will be disposed of at the assembly meeting tomorrow. At 1:30 six of the men at Krafft’s quit work. Just what the outcome of the trouble will be is not easy ‘The bosses seem to be divided, while the journeymen present a solid frons. THE KNIGHTS OF LaBoR, A representative of D.A. 66, K. of L., had a conference with the journeymen this morning, in which he stated the situation and what treatment they might expect from the execu- tive committee if the trouble continues. There is no apparent likelihood of a boycott or a general strike. The fight is made solely aguinst those bosses who insist on the rules and who have locked out the workmen for not signing them, MORE MEETINGS. ‘There will be another special meeting of the bakers’ assembly tomorrow morning, and local assembly 4026, which is made up largely of men who have no regular trade and to which many of the drivers belong, will hold a special meeting probably tomorrow evening. There were about forty-five journeymen “out” today. REE aa CALL AND MIZELL. An Altercation Which Made a Sensa- tion in Florida, A Pensacola special says that city has been in a fever of excitement over rumors of an alter- cation alleged to have taken place between Senator Call and United States Marshal John KR. Thisled to angy words and to some very abusive language by Mizell, for which he subsequently apologized upon Senator Call’s denial of the charge. The two men parted on a much better iocting: Senator Call going to Defuniak Springs to fillan engagement to speak before the Chautauqua, Senator Call is re- jorted to have conducted himself with great afenity and moderation throughout the whole conversation, Senator Cail, who was interviewed in Jackson- ville Saturday night, said: “Mr. Mizell did ap- proach him with language substantially us stated. I sgid to Mr. Mizell that I was at all times responsible for my conduct, public or private. Mr. Mizell became satisfied that his remarks and manner of approach to me were improper and voluntarily withdrew and apolo- gized for them.
