Henrietta P, Westbrook, M.D., read @paper on the real obstacles in the way of woman's enfranchisement, the principal of which she considered to be religion and the church. Mrs. Susan H. Wixon discussed the question “Has the church been an advantage ora disadvantage to woman?” She argued that ithad been a grievous drawback to the sex. After a short address by Mr. J. C. Deputy Joyce Arrives This Morning With the Recaptured Prisoner, This morning Deputy Maurice Joyce of the marshal’s office arrived by Bultimore and Ohio railroad from New Orleans with his prisoner, J. B, Buck, the man sentenced to the Alban: penitentiary for the larceny of Mrs. Potter's diamonds and who escaped from jail here. They came by Baltimore and Ohio railroad from Cincinnati, arriving about 3:45 o'clock, but being ina sleeper, which was left a little way out on the road, they did not leave the car till after 5 o'clock. They were met by Deputy | McCormick and the little van and were driven to the jail, where Buck was in a little time back in a cell safely locked up. Buck does not ap- pear to have changed any and is in good spirits and ready to take his punishment. He is ap- parently unconcerned as to whether he will be tried on the indictment for prison breach in breaking jail or ni aie nen MRS. CLEMENTS COMMITTED. Trial of the Woman Who Used Mrs. Harrison’s Name. Yesterday afternoon in the Police Court Mrs. Harrison’s name fignred in an alleged case of false pretenses, The prisoner in the case was awell dressed little woman about thirty or thirty-five years old. Her name appeared on the warrant as Caroline Clements and she was charged, as heretofore mentioned in Tax Star, with obtaining money froma colored woman named Annie Coleman. Although Mrs, Harri- Son's name was made a part of the court record she was not summoned as a witness, Mrs. Coleman, the colored woman who had expected on Mrs, Clements’ representations to have assisted at the White House St. Patrick’s night, showed the effects of her disappointment when called as a witness, although she has the material for a bright evening costume. Jadge Snell defended the accused and heard the evidence of witnesses, The evidence estab- hed @ prima facie case against the little woman and Judge Miller held her in #300 bonds to await the action of the grand jury. Sampson Tyler, one of Peter Jackson's ad- mirers, was out riding ina hack Sunday might with the Australian slugger. The driver was Louis Jefferson, The occupants of the vehicle wanted to see as much of the city as possible inashort time and Louis was consequently driving his horses at a fast rate of speed. Sev- eral policemen saw the unlawful driving, but thought they would make some allowance for the pugilist. Probably they had some respect for the fact that he had knocked out all comers last week. Policeman Frazier, who saw the hack on 7th street, called to the driver to stop, and attempted to grab the horses, bift Jefferson first lashed the horses and thea the officer and drove on down the street.
