The Way the Woman’s Liberal Union is Fighting the Church. PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONVENTION TODAT—OPPO- SITION TO THE PROPOSAL TO ERRCT A STATUR TOQUEEN ISABELLA—PURPOSES OF THE UNION— OFFICERS OF THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL, When the convention of the Woman's national liberal union met this morning at Willard hall Mra. Matilda Josiyn Gage was in the chair and seated beside her on the platform were Secre~ tary and Mrs. Aldrich, Miss Aldrich, their small daaghter; Miss Clara Folts and Mra, Marietta M. Bones. After the meeting was called to order a few letters of congratulation were read by Mra, Gage, and Mra, E. B. Beckwith, who was recently a eandi- date for mayor in Brooklyn, was cailed on to da telegram she bad received from Helen rdner. This she did and it was greeted with joud apiplause, There was a larger andience in at tendance this morning than there was yesterday and more enthusiasm was aroused by the refer- ences to the wrongs women has suffered at the hands of the church. The secretary read the report of the committee on organization. which outlined a system of work to be accomplished by the union and the moans to be adopted im attaining their object, A STATEMENT OF PURPOSES, The report of the committee on purposes was as follows: First. To assist woman's natural right to self-government; to show the canse of delay im the recognition of her demands and te pro- mote fearlessness in the denunciation of such cutise, Second. To preserve the secular nature of our goverument and the principles of civil and rel.gious liberty now incorporated in the fed- cral Constitution and to rouse public thought to the imminent danger of a union ef church and state through a proposed amendment to the Constitution, the object of which is to recognize the Christian relgion as the founda- on of our government and the true basis of our laws, ‘Third. To show that the real foundation of the church is the doctrine of woman's inferior- ity by reason of her original sin—a doctrine which we denounce as false in science and ite foundation a theuloxical myth, WHEN WOMANHOOD AWAKES, Miss Susan H. Wixon of Massachusetts, @ short-haired lady with an orange silk vest in her brown cloth dress, then read a Jong and very melodramatic poem on the subject, “When Womanhood awakes.” It bewailed the present state of woman, bat told in ringing, prophetic tones of the giorious day that she saw coming, when it could no jonger be said that man’s work lasts from sun to sun, while woman's work is never done, Every stanza of th with the line, hen womanho The millenium would not be a compared to the glorious day Miss Wixon de- picted and her hearors were greatly pleased with the splendid prospect she held out to them, AN ovr This was the third por at the convention and Mrs, members this morning that so many more had been received thet to attempt to reed them «l be quite out of the question, She then told her hearers what she thought of the p Protestant w 2 of America to erect a ‘to Queen faabella, . y have helped Columbns,” said Mra put she certainly was the auther of horrible system of the inquisition, and it is iy awful to think of ching a statue to such a woman,” Mrs. Aldrich was called on tor further ree marks, but excused herself, saying: “I have but recently seen the horrible dungeons in St Augustine erected in accordwnce with the dice tates of Queen Isabella's religion. The very sight made meso sick that [have not got over it yet, and 1 am not able to tell you about "Mrs. Mecca Hoifman of Kansas also spoke on the subject of the statu MRS. BONES’ srencm Mra, Marietta M. Bones of South Dakota was then introduced to speak on the subject of libe cralism in her state, She began by addressing her friends and her feliow citizens, and then apologized to the men present for calling them citizens, She said that she b torgot- ten for the moment that she was not their equal in civil rights aud asked pardon tor her forget- fulness. This little sally wes greeted with hearty laughter, Bones was dressed in black eatin, with » gM of bead work and a large amount of stecl trimming on her bonnet. She appeared to affect the severe in her style, The expres- sion of her face was entirely good-natured, however, and cid not atall accord with her discouree, which was a scathing criticism of the male ex, religion, woman slavery and #® score of other wrongs, She was greeted with loud appiause when in one of her numerous digressions she announced it as her opiton that the convention would be instra- mental in averting the threatened religious war, After Mrs. Bones was through speaking Mrs. Gage arose and said that the major tion of Mrs, Bones’ speech was the production of Lucinda b, Chandler of Minois, and Mra, ones concurred im the statement, LUTIONS ADOPTED, Professor Elliott Coucs read a series of reso- ! us adopted by the convention as express: ing its sentiments ou a number of important ters, but referring principally to the urch, state and the condition of woman, o During the course of the reading he was fre- quently interrupted by loud applanse, ve resolutions declare that it is essential te lite of the republic that the purely civil of the government be saintained and that church and state be forever kept sepa- rate; thatany amendment to the Consitution proposed by the so-called Christian party m politics is destructive of existing civil uberty and religious toleration and should ‘be Ly oppose j all attempts to centralize powe | church or state, must be continaally and fiamly | opposed; thafthe Christian church, of what- ever name, is based on the theory that woman | was created secondary and inferior to mun, | and brought sin into the world and pecessi- | tated the sacritice of a Savior; that every leburch is the enemy of ‘liberty and progress and the chief means of i woman's conscionce and reason; that the real endeavor of the Christian party in polities is to establish a papacy in place of the present secular form of government of the United States, and that it is wrong and unjust vo mpose upon the pupils of our common schovis religious instruction of any sort, and mm simple justice to apne they denounce and oppose every kind of religions instruction im our schools, THE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL.
