The Visit of the Engineers to Senator Sawyer’s Mine. INSPECTING TRE STAMP MILI—AN EXCURSION DOWN THE 6HAFT—HOW THE ORE 18 WORKED— THE PRODUCTS OF THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY GOLD REGION. “Yes, hurry up there, over there by the driver. Got room enough? All right, then.” And Tue Strap reporter found himself en- Sconsced with one of our sable brothers who was to carry a load of the American institute of mining engineers out to inspect Senator Sawyer’s mine in Maryland. The party, about forty in number, left the Arlington about 9:30 Saturday, and the quotation at the heading was addressed to the scribe by Mr. Barber, chairman of the excursion committee, in reply to arequest for permission to accompany them. The first stop was st “Cabin John’s,” where those inside the "busses got out to inspect the great span and those outside got down to see | if they had lost their feet and hands or simply misplaced them. After a stop of about ten minutes, when everyone was thawed out, they mounted again and pushed on up the Conduit road. When about 15 miles out of Washingtcn Senator Sawyer, who was ahead in a phaeton, turned off from the main road through a pri- vate road to his place, It was up hill and the horses could not puil their load, so every one got out and walked; then the horses got stalled with an empty buss and the male contingent of the party “put their shoulder to the wheel” and the caravan moved again. THE STAMP MILL. Senator Sawyer owns abvuut 400 acres of land and it is about as umpromising a looking place one would wish to see. Down 1n a gulch at the foot of the hill stands the “stamp mull,” where the ty were taken first, and there they found Mr. Archer, formeriy superintendent of the works, n in charge of the White Hall mines in Vi ‘ia, both ready and able to answer all of qe with regard to the workings of the mi The building is set at the foot of a hill so that the top floor is in direct communication with the mines by means of a tramway, and the ore is brought down and dumped here to be fed into the jaws ofa great crusher which feeda on quartz; the facility with which this machine chews up the solid rock and spits it out in small pieces would make a dentist's heart ache. ‘The ore after being put through this is carried down through a chute to the stamps, which are ten in number and work somet on the ies of a pile driver, striking about 709 lows per minute and reducing the rock to a fine powder, in which state itis carried down over an endless rubber belt coated with quick silver, through various cradles and ing tables until the tailings cleared of their precious load are deposited at the end of the machine, “PANNING.” The members of the institute seemed much interested in the work and several ‘cleaned up” s panfull of the products and investigated them closely with pocket glasses. To be in the swim the reporter hustled around, got a pan, a shovel full of dirt, and got his arms wet up to the elbow in his endeavors to flop the water out of the pan and leave some of the dirt behind; however, he tried to look thoronghly st home and as though he were in the habitof squatting on the bank of a stream and “* inning” for twelve hours a day. Just as he had finished, that is when he had decided that if he did it any more there would be no more dirt in the pan, one of the employes stepped up and in- formed him that he working the tailings Geeks. refuse) and hemight wash them for forty-eight hours and never get a color. Tu Stak reporter went in the character of an inno- cent spectator after that. After every one had satisfied himself as to the workings of the stamp mill the party proceeded to the office, where a fine assortment of ores was laid out for inspection, Here the whole character of the vein was shown up in all its varieties, and the reporter gazed with envy on fragments of white quartz holding the precions metal and nuggets of solid gold; one in particular, a 334 ounce piece, worth about #60, commanding particular adwiration. The engineers seemed to be skep- tical about the mine, and there was a general tendency toward the idea that perhaps things were viewed a bit too enthusiastically by those concerned, There was another ore sitting over by itself on a desk, flanked by a pitcher of water and two glasses, and after every one had taken @ sample as a souvenir and pronounced it 24 carat tine lunch was announced, This was served in the Senator's house and was presided over by Mrs, Walker, bis daughter. After a bounteous repast, which was made doubly ac- ceptable to every one by the long drive through the cold air, the visitors hghted cigars and, under charge of Dr. Kempster, s partner with the Senator, started for the mine itself. THE MINE. There is one shaft about 160 feet deep giving off three drifts on the vein. The shaft house is a little white-washed building containing the mouth of the shaft, a tool room and a forty horse-power hoisting engine. The reporter went up and peeked gingerly down the square opening and came to the conclusion that it was & very unpromising sortof a Rlace, anyhow; thought about going over and asking the engi- neer if the rope was perfectly safe and if the bucket ever fell off before it got to the top, but Mr. Archer solved the difficulty by handing bim a candle aud informing him that they were to go down by the air hole; did’not know exactly what an air hole was, but concluded it was no worse than that big black hole with the slender cable dangling like a long wire snake down the middle. The visitors went outside and down the side ofa hill until they came toa little square box, which looked lke a man hole in a sewer. There Mr. Archer shoved aside the top and lighting his candle bade the party follow. As the ex- superintendent's head disappeared the reporter sent up a small prayer, wondering if his acci- dent policy was in good working order and then set foot on a long line of ladders set up like the wind in Paddy's hurricane, which blew straight up and down, DOWN THE SHAFT. The Gridiron club added one more laurel to to the wreath of fame which they are weaving for themselves by the more than successful dinner given by them at the Arlington Satur- day night, This was the regular monthly meet- ing of the club, and as George Washington was sensible enough to be born on that day a num- ber of years before and as Mr. Richard Lee Fearn of the Brooklyn Eagle was to be initiated into the mysteries of membership the occasion was made rather a gala one. Yet President Brush seems positive that the club will not be forced to retire, One thing is cer- tain, President Brush does not propose to be crowded out of the league without proper rec- ompense, It is within the power of the seven strongest clubs to vote Indianapolis and Wash- ington out, but this cannot be done without breaking an agreement made before Presidents Brush and Hewett consented to vote for the admission of Brooklyn and Cincinnati. The majority of the Indianapolis players do not want to go to New York. Denny hus said that he will not go, Boyle objects toany such trans- fer and Rusie’s father says the boy shall not go to New York under any circumstances. ‘The men who originally bought the club and brought it here have no financial interest in it now; but as they sunk their money in the en- terprise they feel that they are entitled to have @ voice when the question of selling the club is raised. Well, perhaps it is, but when we have days as dry as that mine almost every one carries an umbrella, The vein varies from 6 to 33¢ feet in width and exteads clear to the surface, where it crops out in several places, running nearly northeast and southwest, BACK To DaTLionT, After seeing everything below the visitors returned to the mouth of the shaft and found the bucket waiting for them—rather a primi- tive elevator, but, as it was at least quicker than the ladders, they got up on the edge and were hoisted rapidly to the land of light again. A little more time was spent in looking around and then, after bidding the Senator, Mr. Russ and Dr. Kempster goot-ise, the party climbed once more into their stages and started back for the city, where they arrived about 5 p.m. convinced that the gold mines of Maryland were of more importance than they had sup- posed.
