DEPEW POLISHING MR. MORSE. In the Triangular Rivalry of the Rest Washington Hopes. IT'S A VERY PRETTY PARROT OF A TIME The representatives of the four cities aspir- ing to the honor of the site for the world’s fair are busy making final preparations for the con- flict to begin in the House Monday, Not con- tent with the floods of eloquence poured out upon the floor of the House during the past two days, they are laboring earnestly and privately with the few mem- bers who are still uncommitted, or who are believed to be open to a change of heart. Nobody expects that the site will be selected upon the first ballot, so that the oppor- tunities to pledge members to a second choice are unusually good. Mr. Chauncey M. Depew put in an ~pear- ‘nce on the door of the House this moruing to indulge in a little quiet missionary work for New York. It happened that there were fewer members in the ball than is usual even on a holiday, as this is, so that there was not a large field for his efforts, but he was introduced to Mr. Morse of Massachusetts, who made a speech yesterday in opposition toa fair in any city, and proceeded to show him the crror @& his ways and tell him many good reasons which, in his judgment, indicated that New York was the only place where a fair could be successfully held. AN OMINOUS COMMUNICATION, Mr. Depew expects to remain here over Mon- day and will not relax his efforts in behalf of New York notwithstanding the fact that he has received a card from Chicago displaying a coftin, skull and cross bones, a gory dagger and other alarming emblems of an evil purpose in- viting him toa meeting at precisely 9 o'clock at night, at which he said he eres he} he was to furnish the subject for discussion, William C. Whitney and other prominent citizens of New York are also in the city, and they expect to be joined by a large delegation of their fellow-citizens tonight. As a delegation of Chicagoans, even larger in point of numbers, is also expected here during the day, members of the House are not likely to enjoy uninterrupted rest during the next forty- eight hours. The Washington contingent are keeping quiet, byt out of ail the tumuit of interests the chances of the celebratior being national and held at the national capital are better, now that the matter has all been talked over, than they ever were before, itlooks today as if the other cities might kill each other off, leaving Washington with the fair. Itis in the nva of the other cities that Washington's chance lies, supported by the sentiment in favor of haviug national cele- brations at the seat of government. 4 HUNDRED ON THE START. Chicago is certainly ahead of them all on the start. She has had more men ut work on Con- gress and has had her campaign generally bet- ter m d than any of the rest. It is ex- cted that she will on the start with a undred votes, New York will have sixty or seventy votes on the start, . perhaps, and St. Louis aud Chicago will a pretty close together as a8 to streng’ It is aoe t that the good words said for St Louis by Mr. Carlisle and Mr. Mills will give that city a number of votes she could not have counted on before. Some of them will come from members who will vowe against the whole bill in the end, whatever site is selected. The New York situation is a curious one, There is no doubt about it that the republicans from New York as a general thing do not waut the fair there, and if they could have it de- feated without the responsibility being fixed on them they would be glad. Washington's chance —— on how strongly the other cities combine against Chicago, WHAT THEY'LL Do MONDAY. The first vote in the House will probably be on a motion made by Mr. Mills, perhaps, to lay the whol: matter on the table, That mo- tion is certain of defeat. Then the vote will be taken on the site. After the site question is settled then the details of the bill have to be settled and the whole matter voted on. It is ee that after the site is fixed the whole ill may be debated. If by any possibility they can get the vote on the general proposi- tion first the chances of there bemg a fair somewhere will be greatly increased. If all the many conflicting interests are ad- jusied and the bill passed by the House it has | no smooth sailing assured in the Senate. The Senate committee has held but one meeting since their general hearings. This meeting was held yesterday and at it the decision was reached not to prepare @ bill or take any other action until the House had got through with the site controversy. If New York should win in the House, it is beiieved that the bill would be killed through New York influences iu the Senate, There is an inner wheel of against the fair, and it is probable ate will not pass the bill at ‘all’ unless it hap- Wa that it be decided to hold the wig in a when it would be free from pol- ass IT IS A FALSEHOOD.
