CHRISTMAS IN WASHINGTON. A Joyous Day In the Homes and Ciurches of the District. THE CHILDREN BEGIN THE CELEBRATION EARLY AND KEEP IT UP LATE—THH DAY AT THE CRIS DREN'S HOSPITAL, THE JAIL, THE ALMSHOUSE, THE INDUSTRIAL HOME SCHOOL, ETO. Christmas in this city is essentially a home. holiday, and the observance of yesterday was no exception to the rule. The weather was mild and during the early part’ of the day the sun was hidden with clouds and mist. It cleared off about noon and the afternoon was bright and cheerfal. The streets, however, were comparatively deserted and the homes, brightened with Christmas greens and Christ- mas good cheer, were the scenes of family re- unionsand festivity. The letter carriers, with their great packs—the modern Santa Claus— could be seen going from hoase to house leav- ing the remembrances and gifts sent by friends living away ‘from the city. A familiar sound during the day was the rumble of the heavily- laden express wagons, and through this agency as well as that of the Post Office department a great deal of Christmas joy was distributed throughout the city. IN THE CHURCHES. During the morning the services held at the yarious churches were well attended, and the elaborate musical programs which wero pre- sented, especially in the Catholic and Episcopal churches, were enjoyed by large congregations, The joyful theme of the sermons of the day made a fitting introduction to the festivities which were so general in home circles. SANTA CLAUS, Perhaps the earliest observances of the day (except the high mass at 5 o'clock a.m. in Catho- lic churches,) were participated in by the juvo- nile portion of the community, who, as a rule, awakened from their sleep some time before daylight and entered into the delightful inveeti- gation of the heavily laden stockings which | lecorated the fire places im so many homes. How Santa Claus managed his sled and team of reindeers over the snowless ground was probably not fully ex- plained, but in the presence of the generous gifts of the patron saint the natural scepticism of childhood was for the time atleast silenced. AT THE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL. There were a great many believers in Santa Claus at the Children’s hospital yesterday. Each of the little ones in that interesting estab- lishment found a filled stocking at his or hor bedside and great rejoicing followed. Before the good things in the stockings had been en- tirely disposed of the children were treated to another and a greater surprise. In the visitors’ reception room a huge Christmas tree had been loaded down with beautiful and useful gifts and these were distributed to the youngsters in the afternoon. The latter surprise was the affectionate work of Mrs. MeGuire and Miss Schenck of the visiting committee. The aftor- noon was spent principally in the play room and a very joyous occasion it was, THE PRISONERS REMEMGERED. Whatever there was of Christmas in the din- ners at the District jail yostorday came from relatives and friends of prisoners. Corned beef, turnipsand corn bread was the regular | bill of fare, moistened by a quart of coffee, but there were only a few of the imprisoned ones who did not taste Christmas dainties of some sortor other. The Santa Claus of the prison was Frank K. Ward. More than a hundred of his friends went down to see him and nearly every one of them took with him a dinner or a considerable portion of one. Of course Mr. Ward could eat but a small portion of what was sent him; the remainder he Uitributed to those who had no friends. ‘The two condemned murderers, Benjamin Hawkins and Lewis Johnson, seemed to enjoy their last Christmas very considerably. Fo- male acqnaintances supplied them with season- able luxuries, Members of the Woman's Christian temper- ance union held religious services on the malo side of the prison, and the St. Vincent do Paul | Sisters attended to the spiritual wants of the females who are incarcerated at the jail. AT THE ALMS HOUSE, The Woman's Christian Temperance, Union was busy at the alms house yesterday. Mra. 3. A. Denham, superintendent of the Flower mis- sion, accompanied and assisted by Misa L. A. Early, Miss Hodge, Mrs. M. E. Foxwell, Miss Richardson, Miss Pratt, Mrs. H. Armstead, Miss Henry, Miss Gibson and several other ladies, | distributed Christmas gifts to the mates. Of these there were 325, and each one was given fruit, crackers and sugar, tied up in one pack- age. The fastening was of white ribbon, anda scripture text was attached to each. The sick folks in the hospital were remembered with flowers and jelly, and the children were mado happy with candy, cake and illustrated books. Religious services were held in each ward, THE INDUSTRIAL HOME ScitooL, Santa Claus visited the children of the Indus- trial home school, Georgetown, Christmas eve. The little ones assembled in the school room r the direction of Mrs, Kate A. Bar- and Mr. Douglass, the n consisting of re- citations, songs and speeche h was greatly enjoyed by the visitors as well as the little ones, Ali at once a dispatch was received from Santa Claus asking when the children would like to receive a visit from him, “At once,” was the unanimous vote of the children, and sure euongh the round, jolly-faced patron of Christ- mas came tumbling into the room and was received with uproarious delight. He distributed the contents of his pack and each child was made happy vith gifts. The president of the board, W. B. Gurley, was presented with gifts on behalf of the’ boys and girls, and “ho made an appropriate acknowledgment, The directors and fricnds of the institution provided thts entertainment for the children, Among the contributors were ausburgh & Bro., Woodward & Lothrop, 3. Baum, Fair, B. Johnson, J. H Young, E. Young, J. H. Semmes, J. H. Ryneal, Boston variety store, Rudolpi Goldschmid, E. Morrison, C.P. May & Co., T. J. Luttrell, the St. George's society and W. 8. Thompson.’ Yes- terday the little ones enjoyed the further treat of a fine Christmas dinner. CHRISTMAS NOTES, Great stacks of provisions were yosterday tributed from Grand Army hall to the fami- lies of about 250 veterans who were in needy circumstances, It was estimated that fuily 1,000 people were fed, President Harrison made a contribution for this purpo: ‘The Sunday scheol pupils of St. John’s Lutheran church, at 454 and D strects south- west, gave a pleasant entertainment last night in the presence of a large number of their friends, Kev. A meeting will probably be held in a few days, at which the situation will be considered. Mr. Wm. H. Singerly of the Record has granted to his printers an advance from 40 to 45 cents per thousand for setting minion, This action, however, it was said, was purely volun- tary, and had nothing whatever to do with the demand of the typographical union, the latter being still in abeyance, An Interstate Gubernatorial Dinner. The rumor that Mrs. Langtry has become reconciled to her husband, and that her pre- sumably tender relations with Mr. Freddy Gebhardt have permanently ceased, has con- firmation, A well-known New York theatrical man, who returned on one of Saturday's steamers, says: ‘There is no doubt that Mra, and Mr, Langtry have settled their troubles. ‘They are frequently seen together and I my- self saw them in a box at the opera in London. Knowing ones say that Mrs. Langtry has al- ways had a high regard for her hasband and that the diiferences between them were en- tirely due to her persistence in remaining upon the stage in defiance of his wishes. A Pigeon Decides a Law Case. From the Cieveland Leader. A novel decision was rendered by Justice Miller in a suit before ‘him between John B. Kirby and John Scott, each claiming the own- ership to a certain carrier pigeon, which was bronght into court in charge of an officer. Justicu Miller, in order to settle the ownership beyond question, ordered the pigeon placed in the hands of two disinterested ‘sons, Who tootk it four miles south of the city and re- leased it. After it had started twochascrs were sent up by Kirby, and Seott followed suit by releasing another pigeon. The pigeon in con- troversy flew straight to the residence of Scoit, and according to the decision of Justice Miller is now Scott's property glad a= The Negro Exodus from Georgia. Great excitement has prevailed in Georgia recently because of the wholesalo exodus of negroes.
