The investigation which has been in progress in the general land oitice for several days to ascertain why a patent was issued for 120 acres of iron land near Duluth, Minn., while » contest over the land was still pending before the Secretary of the Interior, has been completed as far as the taking of testimony is concerned. The commission will now review the testimony and make a reportto the commissioner of the general land office. The evidence received bas been conflicting. One side claimed that the patent was obtained through the connivance of their opponents, which the latter denied. On the part of the land office the clerk thought to be mainly re- sponsible for the im, T issue of the patent stated that it was issued through inadvertence, It was indirectly intimated that there was some connection between some of the land office em- ployes and the attorneys for the parties to whom the patent was issued. The holders | of the patent have returned the patent to the commissioner of the general land office and during the investigation they offered to reconvey to the United States the tent, pro- vided that the other parties would stipulate that their rights under their entry should not be effected, but should be the same as if the patent had not issued. ‘The object of the investigation is to find out why the patent was issued. The land office has no power to cancel a patent once issued, and in case the decision of the Sceretary goes against the present holder of the patent it will be necessary to go into court in order to have the patent annuiled. THE PRESIDENT’S CHRISTMAS. A Christmas Tree at the White House and Gifts for the Little Ones. The Presidential Christmas program as de- tailed in Tuesday's Stag was fully carried out with the exception of the church going, which had to be omited, owing to the fact that there was no service at the Churchof the Covenant. The Christmas tree at the White House was a great success, and the President's grandchildren were transported by their gifts. The Fair Grounds to be Sold to Satisfy Some Unpaid Claims. There will be no more racing at the Ivy City track for some time to come, at any rate under the present management, and unless some new syndicate or organization is formed which will take the grounds off the hands of the National fair association, who are its present owners, and run it as a rice track, it is more than likely that the last race has been runon that track. The last race meeting and its rather disas:rous re- sults for the jockey club have convinced them that racing is not a paying business in this city 80 long as the present hard competition keeps up on the eastern tracks and the temptation continues for stables of the better class to pass by all tracks between New York and the Louis- ville and New Orleans circuit. HIS FAREWELL LETTE TO WIS WIFE—AN UNSUC- CESSFUL SEARCH FOR HIS BODY IN THE EASTERN BRANCH—A GREAT SUFFERER FROM XEU- BALGL. Friends of Mr. Benjamin A. Jones, a well- known citizen of East Washington, were search- ing the shores of the Anacostia today for his body without finding it. The reason for the search was the disappearance of Mr. Jones under circumstances that led his family to the conclusion that he had committed suicide. For some time past he had suffered from neuralgia, and his sufferings had been s0 intense recently that it is thought HIS MIND WAS AFFECTED. Yesterday afternoon Mr. Jones was very quiet and had but little to say to anyone. He wrote a letter, as he said, to Maj. Goodloe, his superior ofticer at the marine barracks, He said that he would send the letter to Maj. Goodloe if he did not feel well enough this morning to go to his work. Before leaving his home he took from his pockets his watch and chain and other valuables and left them with his Elks pin in his room. Soon after leaving home he was seen to mail the letter ina letter box hanging toa en post. Later in the evening he was seen on 8t! street southeast, and the last time he was seen he was going in the direction of the river, walking near the marine barracks, His failure toreturn home last evening alarmed his wife and children, who were unable to account for his absence, They did not know where to go nor what todo, In vain they waited for his return, i HIS LETTER TO HIS WIFE. It was shortly after 9 o'clock when the postman came to the door and handed in a let- ter, On the envelope was written in her hus- band’s handwriting the address of his almost frantic wife. The kind-hearted woman was almost afraid to break the seal of the envelope, for she naturally feared the worst. The letter was written in a shaky hand and conveyed the startling news that when she received it the writer would be dead, ‘There were other state- } ments in the letter which were intended only for the wife to read. Mrs. Jones read the letter and following the advice of her husband she ut it in the fire. The sad new thus received fa @ serious effect on her and today she is in great distress. THE MISSING MAN is about forty-nine years old and was nearly six feet high. When he left home he wore # dark overcoat and a slouch hat. He has been connected with the marine corps for nearly twenty years and was an enlisted man until about four years ago. He has been paymaster’s clerk under Major Goodioe for a number of years. Mr. Jones wasa member of the lodge of Elks and was well and favorably known in East Washington, His family reside at No. 761 7th street southeast, where his mother- in-law, Mrs. Williams, keeps a boarding house. Mrs. Jones was a widow when she married Mr. Jones, her maiden name and married name being Williams. Her first husband was drowned in the Potomac o:¥ the pleasure yacht Elia Treadwell. The police have Leen notitred of Mr. Jones’ disappearance and requested to search the river for his body. — THE NATIONAL GUARD. What is Expected from the Conven- tion to be Heid Here February 5. The call for the meeting says ‘Each state is entitled to be rep- resented by five officers or ex-oilicers of its Na- tional guard, to be selected in such a manner as may be directed by its adjutant-general, the names to be forwarded to the corresponding seeretary by or before January 25, 1890, The fecling in favor of increasing the given by Congress to the National guard is steadily growing, and ifa strong representation from the different states shall attend this meeting it is believed that it would do much toward in- ducing Congress to increase the militia ap- propriation to $1,000,000, Members of the association have been re- quested by Gen. Geo. W. Wingate. its presi- dent, to send to him as soon as possible a brief statement of: “1. Woodward, charged with vio- lating the postal law by sending a letter through the maii for the purpose of defraud- ing, was again called and plead guilty, say- ing that he would not contend against the law. Col. Jack Brown appeared for Woodward and stated that he arrived here in September last, established a book agency here, was unfortu- nate and got in debt. After a conference Woodward left town with the intention of re- A g bis debts, and while en- gaged in business in Pittsburg was arrested, Mr. Coyle said that in his opinion there was not a redeeming feature inthe case. He ex- plained that defendant advertised for young men as agents to make deposits; that he en- gaged the services of Mr. Wade, the Prosecuting witness, taking a deposit of ¥100 and giving his note, and it was aclear case, The grand jury had found a presentment for obtaining money for one Edwards, and there was still a third case in which the victim was an Alexandria gentlemen, who suffered to the extent of $180. ‘There was also a scheme in Pittsburgs WOODWARD INDIGNANT. The defendant indignantly denied the state- ment, saying if he was guilty of what had been stated he would say to the court: “Send me to prison for twenty-five years,” This was not a trial, but if it was, after the statement made, he would fight it to the last. He insisted that his business both here and in Pittsburg was legitimate, and that the reason of his failure was the rainy weuther. He insisted also that the prosecuting witnesses did not want to prose- cae him, but had been urged on by the (Pee ves, The court said that the appearances were against him, and.notwithstan ing bis assertion, the Pittsburg scheme seemed similar to that here. How Its Operation Has Benefited the City of Washington. From the New York Times, There is a plain and important lesson in the history of the effect of the civil-service reform upon the business interests of the city of Wash- ington.
