Armes, stated that the charge against the de- fendant was arson, it being alleged that he set said that in cases from Anacostia he noticed that there were always two factions. Cognsel agreed with the court. Lawyers Moss and Hewlett, who live in Hills- dale, appeared in the case, the former the prosecution and the latter for the defense. Mr. Carrington also assisted in the defense, A COFFER POT AND A NOTE. Lawyer Moss entered court, carrying in his hand a bag, in which were a soap box containing some oil-soaked wood and a coffee *. The it was alleged, was the property ot Gane cat was found beneath the new house that was set on fire. But what the pros- ecution relied upon chiefly was a note, addressed to Patrick Edelin’s wife by aman named John Batson. This note, it was alleged, was left with the defendant to deliver to Mrs. Edelin, but she never received it. Sergt. McCathran produced the note, satu- rated with oil, and witnesses traced it to the defendant's possession, The examination of the witnesses showed that the judge’s opening remarks were correctand that there were two factions in the case. THE CASE SENT TO THE GRAND JURY. Judge Miller was willing to give Garrett an opportunity to explain away the note, but his counsel were satisfied to let the case rest on the government's proof. The court sent the case to the grand jury and fixed bail at $300. Mica stares Robberies Reported. Wilbur F.
