The Zanzibar correspondent of the New York Uerald bas received from Mr. Smith, the act- & British consul at Zanzibar, the following etter from Honry M. Stanley, dated German Station, Mpwapwa, November 11, 1889; “Dear We arrived here yesterday, the ifty-fifth dey from Victoria Nyanza and the né hundred and eighty-eighth day from the \ibert We number altogether about 730 souls, last muster, three days ago, At Emin Pasha’s people numbered 2%, of whom 39 are children. mostly the orphans of Egypt- ian officera. Vita Hassan. spothecary, We have also Messrs, Peres G anlt and Schenze of the Algerian mission. Among the principal officers of the Pasha are Vakeers of the Equatorial province and Major Awash Effendi of the second battalion. STANLEY'S LOSSES. “Since leaving Victoria Nyanza we have lost eighteen of the pasha’s people and one native of Zanzibar, who was killed while we were par- leying with hostile people. Every other expe- dition T have led has seen a lightening of our labors as we drew near the sea, but I cannot yay the same of this one, Our long string of hammock bearers tells a different tale. and un- til we place these poor things on shipboard there will be no rest for us, “The worst of it is we have not the privilege of showing at Zanzibar the full extent of our labors. After carrying some of them 1,000 miles fighting to the right and left of the sick, driving Warasura from their prey over range and range of mountains with every energy on full strain, they slip through our hands and die in the hammocks. One lady, seventy-five years old, the mother of the valkiel, died in this manner iu North Usukuma, A STIRRING TIME. “South of Victoria Nyanza we had as stirring @ time for four days as we had anywhere. For those four days we had continuous fighting during the greater part of the day. The fool- ish uatives took an unaccountable prejudice to the I s people, They insisted that they were cannibals and had come to their country for no good. Talking to them was of no use. Any attempt at disproof drove them into « white, hot rage and in their mad flinging of themselves on us they suffered. “la vised the route to Zavia Simba Mp +8 the best for one thing that specially appears desirable to me—an abundance of food. J propose to adopt that line, As regards the dan of on attack, one road seems to me as bad as another, AN UNEXPECTED DISCOVERY. “We have made an unexpected discovery of real value, It is the extension of the Victorfa Nyanza to the southwest, The utmost southerly reach of this extension is south latitude 20.43, which brings Victoria Nyanza within 155 miles yof Lake Tanganika. I was so certain in my mind that this fact was known through the many voyages of the church missionary societies to Tgunda that I donot feel particularly moved Dy it, ‘Mackay, however, showed me the latest maps published by the society and I saw that uo one had even the suspicion of it. On the road here I made a rough sketch of it and1 find that the area of the great Iake is now in- creased by this discovery to 26.900 square miles, which is about 1,900 square miles larger than the reputed exaggerations of Capt. Speke. LOCATION OF THE LAKE. “If you will glance at the map of the lakes toward the southwest you will find that their coast line runs about west northwest and east southeast, But this coast line so drawn con- sists mainl, ¥ series of large mountainous islands—man¥ of them well peopled—which overlap one another. South of these islands is the large body ot water just discovered. Lake Uniji_ also, which Capt. Speke so slightiy sketched, turns out to be avery respectable lake, with populated islands in it. I hope that we shall meet before long: 1 beg to remain you obedient servant, ‘“H»esny M. STANLEY. “To British consul general at Zanzibar,” - tee, = SECRET SOCIETIES ANDCATHOLICS Bishop Ryan Denies fhat the Church Is to Change Its Attitude. From the Buffalo Courier, A most surprising announcement with refer- ence to secret societies has been made since the Catholic congress began its sessions in Bal- timore. The assertion was that the ban of the chureh was to be lifted absolutely from every sort of secret organization except the Masonic order and that even the objections to this fra- ternity would probably be waived within twelve months, One of the most startling features of this declaration in the opinion of Bishop Ryan, who was consulted yesterday with regard to it, is the unparalleled assumption in attempting to speak for the dignitaries of the church. Bishop Ryan declared that there was no authority for mak- ing such a statement. 'e declared to the reporter that in fact and intone it was untrue. “The statement was printed in a Baltimore paper on the morning | we went to Washington to dedicate the cathe- dral.” he said. “and all with whom I talked were not only surprised to see such a thing in print but were emphatic in declaring the asser- tion groundles ‘The bishop sid that the advisability of send- ing an official denial to the paper was consid- ered. but it was" finally decided not to do so, The bishop was sure he knew as much about What Was going on in church matters as the identi ay delegate and he had not heard, | prior to the publication of the interview, any- thing about the secret society question. oT gislation, of church is sufficient upon the question.” he said. “Our laws could | not be changed mnless the archbishops met for th tpurpose, This I know they did not do, | Lit was matter with which the congress itself, which was composed of laymen, had nothing to do.” - eee A Deadly Hurricane in the South, At 1 o'clock resterday a fearful storm struck Newbe 4 oming from the southwest, The plate and pulp factory of 3. The Montreal Heraid, the chief organ of the IT WAS A MISTAKE. South Carolina Papers Condemn Senator Hampton’s Letter. A Columbia, 8. C.. special to the Philadelphia Press says: Senator Wade Hampton's recent letter to Postmaster General Wanamaker con- cerning the Columbia post office has met with secant approval at the hands of the press of the state, and a number of the leading democratic Papers are unqualified in their condemnation of the Senator's strong langnage and repudiate itas reflecting the sentiments of the people of South Carolina, The Marion Index, one of the most influential democratic journals in the state, refers to the matter in the following terms: “For thirteen years Senator Hampton has stood upon the very summit of political power in South Carolina,a hero worshiped from afar off by a hero-worshiping people. Unfortu- nately, however, Senator Hampton has Jost | ge amoug many people in South Caro- ina, He is not the hero he once was. It is to be regretted that his latest venture, his cele- brated letter to Postmaster General Wana- maker, contains nothing in it that can be coni- mended. We repudiate the ides that this letter meets with universal favor among the people of South Carolina. So far from this being 60 we are mistaken in the people of the state if they do not condemn the venerable Senator's course in this matter. If it should be admitted that Senator Hampton's charges against Mr. Wanamaker in regard to the Uagteetaalg 4 at Columbia are true it should be borne in mind that precisely identical charges have been made against almost every man in public life and even the Senator himself. “Mr. Wanamaker is a republican, but his in- tegrity for that reason is not to be impeached. His public record is as free from reproach as Senator Hampton's, and there is uo reason to believe him to be otherwise than the honorable gentleman be professes to be. Senator Hamp- ton’s letter does him no credit. It savors strongly of bombast and he has ouly made him- self ridictlous by his bluster in the public prints, His letter was uncalled for and inex- cusable, considered from any point of view. ‘The Newberry Observer The letter is neither good taste nor good politics, It was unjust to give such a letter to the newspapers when it could as easily have been sent privately to Mr. Wanamaker to remind him of his prom- ise. Had he remembered his promise he would, no doubt, ha¥e recalled the appointment at once. and had he not remembered the promise he would, in all probabili' have taken the wator’s word for it, The reterence to Mr. Wanamaker's Sunday scool class is in very bad taste, Mr, Wanamaker taught a Sunday sehvol class Jong years before he became a Postmaster General, and in all those years was regarded as & good man, and we be he is-trying to do bis duty as Postmaster General.” The Greenville Jaily News, the most influen. tial paper in upper South Carolina, condens the Senator's letter as grossly indecorous and calculated to defeat the Senator's intluence, The Daily Register of Columbia, Hampton's home, has maintained a severe silence as to the matter. REMARKABLE DESPAIR. The Letter Broessel, the Baltimore Artist, Left Behind Him. The body of Felix Broessel, the young artist who shot himself in New York Wednesday morning, was buried in that city. Shortly be- fore firing the fatal shot young Broessel wrote several notes, put them in envelopes and addressed them, This ts one of the notes: “My Dear ——: By the time you get this note I will most likely have embarked on the grande voyage, if this only bullet that I possess does its duty, Try to think as well of me as you can—there certainly was nothing radically the matter with me. I have only taken a decided dislike to this useless sort of strugule. Delieve me, it isnot a question of dollars and eents. The reason I come to this vile place is that I had to have some corner to commit this out- rage, and Idid not care to make a mess in any respectable establishment, At this momenta little brate of a French peasant girl is sitting beside me on a sofa—what a strange world this is!—whose father and mother 1 knew in the smal) village in France. Apropos of Kobert Bonner’s purchase of Sunol for, probably, $110,000, the New York World recapitulates Mr. Bonner’s previous no- table purchases, Mr. Bonuer’s tirst purchase of a trotter is said to have been in 1856, when he paid $375 for a bay mare to drive on the road that could trot in about three minutes. He was in bad health, aud driving was recommended as a re- lief from the pressure of business, Since then he has paid probably as much as $500,000 for horses. In 1359 Lantern and mate were pur- chased for $9,000; in 1560 Lady Palmer for $5,000, and a’ year later Flatbush Maid was secured a3 a mate for Zn 1564 Mr, Bonner bought Pocahon: for her $40,000.
