Locally (in the county) the canvass bas been spiced with the issue of a circular by the secre- tary of the republican committee, Mr. Job Hawhurst, raking up the political record of Major O. E. Hine, and the issue of another in reply by the latter gentleman. The two were an illustration of diamond cut diamond. It is tobe observed that, despite the sharpness of this local conflict, in comparison with the coun- ties of the state generally, the republican voters in Fairfax have gone to the polls with more firmness and less loss in numbers in sup- port of the republican ticket, probably, than any other county in the state. Axtell was displaced as the greatest three- year-old trotter Saturday by Leland Stanford's filly Sunol, which trotted the Bay district track at San Francisco in 2.10!¢ and clipped one and a-half seconds from ‘the. ex-king’s marvelous performance at Terre Haute, Ind. During the last few weeks horsemen have been greatly in- terested in the approaching test of Sunol’s capabilities, aud when the filly was brought out on the track Saturday afternoon there was a big crowd present to witness her perform- ance. The start was made with a ranning horse, which was about a furlong behind. Sunol reached the quarter in 32seconds,the half in 1.05, the third quarter in 1.37}/. The runner pressed her closely down the stretch and Marvin, her driver, applied the whip, but the colt did not make the slightest skip ‘and passed under the wire in 2.10'¢. When the time was announced there was wild cheering among the spectatora and the enthusiasm coutinued several minutes, Sunol had held the record for horses of her age until Williams’ wonder began his great sories of trials which finelly ended in the Cali- fornian’s overthrow. ‘Then a match was talked of to be trotted this winter between the two phenomenal racers, but Axtell’s relegation to the stud until spring ended the negotiation. OTHER RECORDS BROKEN, Sunol’s performance was not the only sensa- tion of the day, and Senator Stanford satiated his desires to his heart's content. Last year Axtell, a8 a 2-year-old, showed a milo in 2, the record for colts of that age, but tod. Regal Wilkes flashed under the wire in 2.20/ Nor was this all, for Faustin, Count Valencius champs n yearling, sped once around the and atthe end the timer’s dial showed | for the performance, breaking the best previous yearling record, held by Von Wilkes, by three full seconds, Another great show was that made by Palo Alto, one of the Senator's favorite three-year- olds, who was also sent to bent Axtell’s time. Owing to u mishap he was unsuccessful, but .123¢, only a half second behind. This performance was a wonderful one and was only robbed of its brilliancy by Sunol’s unpre. cedented feat. It was a great day fer the rac- ing association, a greater one for those fortu- | nate enough to be spectators, but the greatest honors came to Senator Stanford, who bred and | raised the great performers und whose ambi tion in the horse line was realized. ‘fhe prom- ised exhibitions of speed drew an enormous | crowd to the Bay district track, it being the last day of the fall meeting. It prints ALL THE NEWS, Local, Domestic and Foreign, LONG IN ADVANCE OF THE MORN. ING PAPERS. This is conspicuously true of all classee of news, but especially so in regard ‘I Local News and District Affairs, THE STAR has a very much LARGER and BETTER force of LOCAL RE- PORTERS and SPECIAL WRITERS than any other paper in Washington ever thought of employing, and ITS MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT AND PRINTING FACILITY ARE MORE THAN THREE TIMES AS POWER- FUL AND RAPID AS THOSE OF ANY OTHER WASHINGTON PAPER. It is therefore able to print each day a full report of every transaction of public ine | terest occurring in the District up to the very hour of going to press. By the free use of the OCEAN CABLES: for REGULAR AND SPECIAL DIS- PATCHES, and with the difference of time in its favor, it is also able to give its readers every afternoon the news of the WHOLE EASTERN HEMISPHERE for the entire day, and up to 12 o'clock midnight, thus leaving literally nothing in the way of news from Europe, Asia, and Africa for the morning papers. Equally does THE STAR lead all its contemporaries in the publication of the NEWS OF OUR OWN COUNTRY. Receiving the regular dispatches of both News Associations; with alert and enterprising special telegraphic cor- respondents at all important points; and with wires leading directly from Its own office to the general network of telegraph system touching every city, town and hamlet in the United States and Terrie double ferriage across New kork For oo mad City, 11240 ann week dapa, 12220 p.m. For Baitinore, a 100 and 0 aim. and 4 a0 Gil: daily, except Sund: For Annapolis, 7-20 and 9100 am., 12:05, 4:20 and 6:00 pam daily, except Suday. Pg — THE RESULT: 9 THE STAR HAS MORE THAN THREE TIMES AS MANY REGULAR THAN FIVE TIMES AS MANY REGULAR READERS AS ANY OTHER DAILY PAPER IN WASHINGTON. It is de- livered regularly by careful carriers at the HOMES OF THE PEOPLE, AFTER THE BUSTLE AND WORRY OF THE PAY ARE OVER, and it is thus read leisurely and thoroughly by EVERY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY. They know that it prints all the news, and has only the interests of the people of the District in view, with no partisan measures to advocate, and no private schemes to forward. They know it, in short, tobe THE PEOPLE’S PAPER, and nothing else. Asan ADVERTISING MEDIUM it is, therefore, ABSU- LUTELY WITHOUT A RIVAL. It ts in fact worth more as a means of reach- ing the public THAN ALL THE OTHER DAILY PAPERS IN THE CITY TOGETHER. Furthermore, in proportion to the re- ‘turns it gives its patrons, ITS ADVER- TISING RATES ARE THE CHEAPEST IN THE CITY. —0: — In conclusion, the public should bear in mind this one significant fact: THE STAK does not rely upon empty boasta to impress the public. ITS CIRCULA- TION IS SWORN TO; its PRESS- ROOM IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC; and its BOOKS MAY BE INSPECTED by any one having an interest in their examination. These are CRUCIAL TESTS, which few papers invite, and which those that boast most are least able to stand. —01—— > The esteem in which THE STAB is held by the reading and advertising public is conclusively showm by the fig- ures given below. In the first six months of each of the five years named the average daily cire culation of the paper was: bb BOO on nvensanveoncnsanne ROOF CON “* 1886.......ccsccesscenes- 24,382 “* 1887 ......ccorceresnege+-B5, TOR * 1888.......cessssevesee+-27 068 * 188D........orccccccene--B0, 262 —o—— Equally significant is the showing iz regard to the advertising patronage of the paper, which is the surest indication of its acknowledged value as a medium of publicity. Thenumber of NEW AD- VERTISEMENTS printed in the col- umns of The Star during the Grst siz months of the years named was as fol-e Possible that THE STAR IS THE RE- COGNIZED CHANNEL OF THIS COM> MUBICATIONS.
