Startling Adventure in a Nebraska ‘Town—Poor Shooting at Short Range. A thrilling story of attempted murder and robbery is told in # report recently received from « podt office inspector. The scene of the adventure is laid ina small town in Nebraska, where therd is a post office on a mail wagon route, which is kept by the postmaster in his store. On the afternoon of the day in question the postmaster had occasion’ to be absent and his deughter, nineteen years of age, remained in charge of the premises, About half-past 5 o’clock a strange man,‘who had the appearance of a tramp, entered the store and asked the young lady {pr @ lunch, which she furnished him. - He staid in the store and ate his lunch, but did not offer to pay for it, The postmaster returned about two hours later and found the stranger still there. There he remained until about 9 o'clock when the aster remarked to him that it was now about time to close oP. ; The stranger asked how much he owed for lunch and the postmaster told him that his bill amounted to 40 cents, SHOOTING AT CLOSE QUARTERS. The tramp then inquired if he could get change for a $20 bill, and the postmaster informed him that he could, and stepping to the money drawer in the store he began to count out the change. The tramp walked up to the counter and standing directly opposite the iter thrast both hands in his pockets as if search- ing for the bill. He, however. much to the surprise of the postmaster, pulled out two re- volvers, which he pointed at that official and exclaimed in a determined voice: ‘Your money or your life. Without waiting for a reply he began blazing away at the postmaster, who stood only about four feet away. He fired ten shots in rapid succession at this short range, but only four struck the intended victim, au the most surprising feature is that none of these reached a vital part. THE WOUNDED POSTMASTER'S GRIT. One ball went into the fleshy part of the left arm, one in the right arm near the shoulder, one laid the ekin open on the outside of the throat and one laid open the skin on the side of the head over the left ear. The postmaster witb genuine western it stood up bravely under this fusilade and having no weapon at hand seized some seal weights and canned goods and returned the fire with so much vigor and effect that the tramp turned and fled from the store. When he got outside of the door he fired a parting shot back at the postmaster and then disappeared. The entire neighbor- hood was aroused to action by this cold-blooded attempt upon the life of the postmaster, but as far as learned the tramp has not been found. This affair occurred in the little town of Ad- mah, Washington county, Neb., and the post- master’s name is G. Pegan, SOLVING INDIAN PROBLEMS. Commissioner Morgan on the School and Allotment Question. Indian Commissioner Morgan in his annual report to the Secretary of the Interior, reiter- ates his well known views in regard to model- ing the system of education among the Indians upon the public school system. He would have the system adopted to the special exigencies of the Indian youth embracing all persons of school age, compulsory in its demands and uni- formly administered. He says that an effort is being twade to develop for the Indians, a non- partisan. non-sectarian school system. “Special stress,” adds the Commissioner, “is laid upon moral fitness of candidates for teacher's posi- tions, and though no religious test is applied, those are preferred who are able to exert a re- Ugious influence over their pupils,” The com- missioner thinks that pupils after leaving school should be encouraged to seek homes for themselves whenever they can find the best opportunity to eurn a living. He says that the return of a pupil to the reservation lite has a demoralizing influence, and in cases where the: return they ought to be helped and encouraged, The average attendance at all the schools last year was 11,552. LAND IN SEVERALTY, In regard to the work of allotting land in severalty to the Indians the commissioner says that since the last report the work of making allotments on the Winnebago reservation in Nebraska and the Grand Ronde reservation in Oregon has been completed. Allotment work was continued on the Crow reservation in Mon- tana, but was stopped owing to the need of addi- tional surveys, ‘fhe work on the Warm Springs reservation in Oregon will be completed in the near future, and the same muy be said of the allotments to the Absentee Shawnees and Citi- zen Pottawatomies in the Indian territory, at the Yankton reservation, Dakota, at the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho, at Devil's Lake res- ervation, Dakota, and to the united Peorias and Miamis, Indian territory. During the year 1,341 tents have been issued to the Indians of the Tavs ‘Traverse reservation in Dakota and forty- eight to the Bad river band and thirteen to members of the Lac du Flambeau band of Chippewas of Lake Superior. The report states that the work of allotment is progress- ing as satisfastorily and as rapidly as a due regard to the condition of the Indians will permit. The commissioner thinks that if the general allotment act should be amended so as to give each person, without regard to age or condition, including married women, an equal quantity, say 160 acres, it would prove satis- factory to a large majority of the Indians, and would avoid many of the difficulties which now stand in the way of inducing them to take their lands in severalty. The funds held in trust by the United States now amounts to $20,909,556. LORD SALISBURY’S SPEECH. He Warns Labor Agitators and Gives Home Rulers a Slap.
