Atamecting of the Northeast Washington citizens’ association held last evening at the Peabody school building, Josiah Millard, pres- ident, and 8. H. Walker, secretary, Mr. Lor- ing Chappel, from the special committee on streets, reported that they had submitted to the Commissioners the schedule adopted by the association; had also called attention to 6th street between H and I, which was being built up. The Commissioners gave no definite prom- ise about Maryland avenue. Mr. 8. W. Curriden, from the committeo on steam railroads, reported that the Baltimor» and Ohio officials were engaged in making sur- yeys. The committee believed that Vice Pres- ident King and Chief Engineer Douglass earn- estly desired to please the citizens of the north- east. THE BOUNDARY SEWER. Mr. W. C. Dodge reported from the water and sewer committee the communication of the Commissioners as tothe Boundary street sewer. They recommend that the Commissioners should ask an sppropriation to dredge a chan- nel from the outlet to the channel of the East- ern branch, as otherwise there would in a few years be as serious cause of complaint as had existed on the Potomac Hats. A motion b: = = W. Smith that the commit- tee urge suc! appropriation, and also that the Commissioners asked to proceed with ie ametiake laying of water pipe, was car- rie Mr. H. H. Martin made a motion, which was carried, that the committee on streets wait on Maj. Ernst as to the closing of G and H streets and Delaware avenue. The question of the amount of taxes paid by the county was called up, and Mr. Dodge read @ statement showing t ie average amount of taxes from 1890 to 1888 in the county was $84,518, and Congress had appropriated for schools and roads $100,431. TIMING TRAINS. Mr. Aldrich moved that the Commissioners be thanked for their efforts in timing the speed of trains. It was stated by some of those present that the speed of trains had been greatly reduced between Boundary and the District. Others stated that it was only below H street that there was any change, and others that the ef- fort to prevent the fast running of trains had been unsuccessful in consequence of the action of the Police Court. One member remarked: “Speed is reduced whenever they kill a man, for then the ofticers are vigilant.” The subject was referred to the railroad com- mittee. Mr. Thos. Taylor, from the sanitary commit- tee, made a report on the unsanitary condition of square: and 721, stating that they had learned that the lots could be filled from the adjoining streets. It was stated that there were ra ponds of water in these squares caleulated to breed sickness, and that they could be drained by cutting a sewer. THE WORLD'S EXPOSITION. Mr. S. W. Curriden offered a resolution di- recting the president of the association to in- vite the attention of the District Commission- ers, as well as the board of promotion of the werld’s exposition in 1892, to the availability of the vast area of unimproved land in East Wash- ington appropriate for a site for the exposition. The resolution was warmly indorsed by Messrs. Smith, Chappel, Dodge and others atid unani- mously adopted. THE NORTHEAST AND CAPT. SYMONS. Mr. E. J, Hill moved that the association ex- press regret foz the removal of Capt. Symons, saying that he had been a faithful officer and he hoped that his successor would be as useful. Mr. Smith said that Capt. Symons had always treated the citizens of the northeast kindly. Mr. Chappel said that Capt. Symons had done all that he could for them. Mr. Clark opposed the motion, saying that Capt, Symons had dome nothing for the north- east, but everything he could for the north- west. Mr. Dodge also opreed the motion and said no mar had worked more persistently against the interests of East Washington than had Capt. Symons. He had been, he said, the ad- vocate of schemes for the northwest. He re- ferred to the Rock-crvek tunnel project and to the fact of Capt.
