A MIDNIGHT ASSASSIN. A Woman Summoned to Her Door and Shot in the Shoulder. In Pierce's court southwest near South Capi- tol and O streets lives a colored woman named Mary Brooks, Last ight Mary and her hue- band retired about 10 o'clock. During the day she had had @ quarrel with « colored mam named Andrew Ashton. She had forgotten all about the matter, but Andrew had not. It was about midnight when some one awakened Mary by vigorously hammering on the front door. She arose and, throwing & wrap about her shoulders, went to see who her midnight visitor was, When she turned the key and opened the dopr she saw aman standing there, who she supposes was Andrew Ashton. He had a re volver in his hand, and before Mary could dis- appear in the darkness he pulled the bullet into her left shoulder, She screamed as she fell to the floor, su she Feeney Pre msg a passed through the shoulder and came through the ‘fleshy part of the arm. Row- land, late matron of Dr. Hammond's sanita- rium, charged with the embezzlement of $60 from the doctor, was coutiaued in the Police Court yesterday afternoon aud Mrs. Rowland was further cross-examined by Mr. Armes, His line of inquiry was condemned by Mr. Cole, counsel for the defendant, who spoke of the examination into her private affairs (he had asked her a question about her husband) as un- gentlemanly conducton the part of the prose- culing attorney, Mir, Armes made a sharp reply, accusing his Opponent of Untruthiulness, aud a scene fol- lowed, which was terminated by the imterposi- onot the court, who cautioned Mr. Armes not to pursue that line of inquiry, as it had nothing to do with the charge of embezzie- meut. The water poured over the perma- nent dam, on top of which the “splash” dam had been erected, in a solid body 4 feet thick, and gradually increased in volume as the 11 miles of pent-up water got fairl: a few minutes a rise of 2 feet am curred in the river below the dam, while the water traveled down the stream like a small tidal wave, sweeping everything movable on the banks before it. The rise became apparent at Muncy, nearly twelve miles away, about 5 o'clock, and in an hour the river there was sixteen inches higher than before the dam was collapsed. “splash” lessened in volume the further it eled. 1t continued to run about four hours, giving plenty of time for the log drivers to do ‘Splash” dams are common in the smaller streams, but it is seldem that they are r resorted to in the river, As the river at Williamstown is over one thousand feet in width the erection of such a dam required a great deal of lumber, nearly all of which was carried away when the dam was broken. 1,000,000 feet of timber had been driven into (306) Mase. ave.
