That’s the Palais Royal opening today. Each of the many de- partments is fully stocked, but some few of them are so beautiful and so novel as to deserve especial mention. Very fine is the display of furs, aud the purchaser's pocket book can easily be suited. The old-fashioned mink is once more to the front and, in company with it, are trimmings of Angora and Astrakan, The array of jewelry is a glittering success, the newest stples having a great deal of tinted ename! in their makeup. Curefully-tinished reproductions of the miniature work of the past century also bid high for popular favor. Some of the choicest specimens are imported. Leather goods, arranged as they are, could not be otherwise than attractive and the low, plainly: -marked prices render doubly so, The ndkerchief display extends the entire length of the store and divides the honors with grace- fully-draped laces. THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, THE NEW AVENUE PAVEMEN Capt. Symons Says the the North Side Will be Finished in Time fof the Parade. “The avenue will not be entirely completed in time for the Knights Templar parade,” said Capt. Symons to a Sran reporter today, “I think the north side will be finished its entire width from 1st to 17th street, and I have strong hopes that the south side will be in condition at least from 7th to 15th and from 15th to 17th street. The intermediate section of 15th street from Pennsylvania avenue to New York avenue will not be completed. This street was left intact as we found the Barber company could not compRte itin season, This was due to the fact that the specifications governing the construction of the street provided that the pavement should be laid on a hydraulic cement concrete base, and as it would require some days for the concrete to set we concluded it would be good policy to let it goover. I think special praise is due to the railroad com- pany for the expedition with which they have completed their share of the work. Messrs. Cranford & Co, also deserve a great amount of credit. The class of pavement already laid shows great care in its construction and } prom- ises to outwear any pavement heretofore laid in the District.” ——>___ THE STEAM WHISTLES. An Order Will Probably be Issued Against Sounding Them in the City. The opinion of Attorney Riddle, in which he held that itwas s penal offense to sound a steam whistle on any avenue, street, alley, highway, footway, parking or public space in the District, has heretofore been printed in Tux Sran. The opinion has caused a great deal of comment, and the Commissioners have been urged in several communications from itizens to issue an order based on the atter- ney’s opinion. It will be remembered that Attorney Riddle suggested at the time that it might be well to issue notice that section 1, article 9 of the police regulations would be en- forced against all railroad companies. It is as follows: io bell, gong, horn, whistle, drum or other noise-making article, instrument or device, when in the ds of any person or attached to any animal, vebicle or apparatus, shall be struck or sounded in any of the places mentioned in section 1 of article 8 of these regulations for any purpose whatsoever, with the exception of the sounding of bells or gongs upon sleighs Or other vehicles on runners, and the vehicles and apparatus of the police and fire depart-| M ment.” it was under this section that Attorney Rid- die based his opinion and recommended that notice be given of its strict enforcement. The Commissioners, realizing the importance of the cuse, have decided to look thoroughly into the matter in board session. It is understood that an order based on the attorney's opinion will shortly be issued. —— Public Amusements. Axpavon’s Granp Orgra Hovse.—Mr. Lewis Morrison's new production of ‘Faust” which ; Was seen at Albaugh’s last night for the first time in this city, is one which is most credit- able to him as au actor and anartist. The scenery is superb and the mechanical effects are intricate and in many instances thrilling. | He has given the most careful attention to the eluboration of all the details of spectacular effect, and the result was that each separate scene was loudly applauded as it came before the view of the large audience which watched the entire performance with deep interest. All the resources of long stage experience, artistic taste, and mechanical and seientitic ingenuity have been brought to bear to make this a epgragghe ¥en The Copter scene, the duel in which Valentine is killed, the Brocken scene and the final apotheosis of Marguerite were stage pictures whose beauty has rarely been hey! peaho The story is, of course, famil- iar and the interest centers in the acting of Mephisto andMargueritte. Mr. Morrison's con- ception of the arch Send may not be exactly in harmony with that of Goethe, but itis a con- sistent and well studied effort, its pervading wickedness being relieved by a dry satanic humor which lightens up an otherwise repulsive part. Mr. Morrison's calls before the curtain were fully merited. Miss Morrison's Margue- rite is charmingly rendered, the innocense of the earlier scenes being given with effective naivete, while she exhibits sufficient emotional power in the tragic close, ‘Faust will be given every night during the week and at the Wed- nesday and Saturday matinees. Naw Nationa Taeatse.—“Later On,” cer- tainly canght on at the National last night and kept an audience which filled every portion of the house in @ continuous roar of laughter from beginning to close. It is merely @ skit, but it serves its p of amusement and fur. nishes an opportunity for some excellent sj cialty work. The piece ee with a vim and to its quick action es less than the excellence of the performers its enjoyment is attributable. Hallen and Hart are a host in themselves and wherever they are seen is also found little An- nie Lewis, whose hearty welcome last night must haye convinced her that her many friends who encouraged her as @ child-reader are highly gratified at her professional devel- opwent. She has blossomed out into acharming commedienne, She sings well and dances like @ fairy and inthe part of Panay her exuberant spirits have full vent. Numerous floral testimonials were handed to her over the footlights. The entire ay is a good one and the piece is splendidly costumed and staged. “Later On” will hold the stage during the entire week, with matinees tomorrow and on Saturday. Hanus’ Buov Tazaten.—There will be no performance at Harris’ Bijou until Thursday night, when the Cleveland-Haverly Minstrels, headed by Billy Sweatman and Billy Rice, will commence a brief sagneesent.
