Judge Miller Serious Violations of Law are Not So Rausch as Weenie: Judge Miller of the Police Court says that during the past few months there has been a decrease instead of an increase in crime. The number of cases brought before his court is large, but the offenses charged are minor ones. Disorderly conduct, profanity and similar of- fenses (mainly owing to whisky drinking) and other violations of the municipal ordinances form s majority of the cases brought before the court, Charges of assault and of larceny are not brought in such large numbers as they were some time ago, the judge says, and cases of serious assaults are seldom heard of as com- pared with the records of the past. ABOUT THE COLORED PEOPLE. “The colored people,” the judge continued, “deserve great credit for their good conduct. People often remark, ‘we ought to have a whipping post.’ I ask for what, and the; for toe negroes.’ That is not so. 1 already stated, the colored people credit for the observance of the law. them who aj in court are brought in for trivial offenses that are bound to be committed As Ihave deserve ina e_city,and for which the pexalty is jortiy Eph. We doce nat mn dance in 0 | month that acolored ym is ught before the court for an 't on a white person, and hardly once in a year for a serious assault, Taking everything into consideration, with an increased police force in a large city, I think the city presents an excellent record, so far as the commission of crime is concerned.” eee MOUNT PLEASANT CEMETERY. The Health Officer Recommends That No More Interments be Made There. Health Officer Townshend yesterday trans- mitted to the Commissioners his report, on the complaint of Mr. G. Browne Goode and sixty- eight other residents of Mount Pleasant, asking that further interments in what is known as the “Young Men’s Baptist” or “Mount Pleasant” cemetery be forbidden. A plat of the cemetery accompanies the report. ‘As will be seen by the plat,” says the report, “this cemetery is lo- cated on Adams’ Mill road, adjoining Lanier Heights, and contains about six and three- quarter acres of land. I find, upon examina- tion, that the ground is filled to overflowing, and the management have been driven to the extremity of manufacturing terraces on the ledges 0: rock in the extreme western portion. The records show that 4,757 interments have been made in this piece of land within the it ten years. The character and formation of the ground now being used, together with its crowded condition, render it advisable and necessary to this fast growing section that further interments be discontinued at once. I would recommend that further permits in this cemetery be refused.” scoala RETAIL DEALERS ORGANIZING. The Steps Taken to Prevent Competition by Wholesale Dealers. The meeting of the retail dealers in fruits, vegetables, produce and poultry at the hall of the Washington market company yesterday afternoon was largely attended. The meeting was called to order by Mr. Charles Brunger, who read a paper binding the retail dealers not to purchase of wholesale dealers who sold by retail. The articles of produce generally'sold by the dealers were designated and the quanti- ties in which they are to be sold were aiso given. An agreement not to sell at retail had been accepted and signed, Mr. Brunger said, by nearly every wholesale dealer in the city. A permanent organization was effected and the followi officers were elected: E. C. Peach, president; Norman G. Engel, vice pres- ident; J. A. Chandler, secretary; E. O. Kid- well, treasurer. It was decided that the new regulations go into effect next Friday. The next meeting will be held Tuesday afternoon of next week. —_—___ MARYLAND REPUBLICANS.
