CITY AND DISTRICT. ‘@ Tae Evexrve Srar’s subscription lists, the books of the office, and its press and de- livery rooms are at all times open to the wel- come inspection of any person having a color- able interest in the correctness of its claims as to circulation. This is a guarantee to adver- tisers that is given by few papers in the world, and by none other in Washington! TRAVELING DOWN THE INCLINE. The Senators Again Defeated in Pitts- burg. HOW THE GAME WAS LOST--THE OTHER LEAGUE CONTESTS—NEW YORK AND BOSTON STRUG- GLING POR FIRST PLACE—THE RECORD—NOTES OF THE DIAMOND. The Senators received their seventh suc- cessive drubbing yesterday in Pittsburg by the score of 13 to § im the presence of about 400 people. Superior batting by the Pittsburgs did the business. The Statesmen started well enough, ending the thirdinning tworuns in the lead, but the enemy humped themselves in the fourth and made six runs, winning the game in the next by scoring three more. The Senators Spurted in the sixth and pounded out four runs—their last tallies—but this did not suffice and the home team won easily, scoring two more in the ejghth, at the endof which the game was called on account of darkness. The batteries were Krock and Clarke and Maul and Miller. Every man on the home team batted safely, Sunday omy | with four singles. Sam Wise did the best batting for the visitors, with a double anda single. Wilmot found the ball once for three bases, Riddle hit fora double and Brother John, Hoy, Capt. Arthur and Clarke touched the ‘sphere for a single apiece. The fielding was fair, each side mak- ing three errors. Wilmot secured one of these and the Irwin brothers the rest. Washington made 8 hits and Pittsburg 17. OTHER GAMES. New York defeated Indianapolis in six innings ofa slugging match, the score standing 16 to 12. The Giants began the game in earnest, making nine runs in the first inning. The batteries were Shreve, Fee and Buckley and Welch, Crane and Ewing. Shreve and Welch were batted out of the box. New York made 12 hits and 5 errors and Indianapolis 12 hits and 3 errors, Boston won from Chicago in a pitchers’ bettle, 7 to 5. Pfeffer muffed a ball in the first which practically lost the gante. The batteries were Heschineon, Farrell and Darling and Rad- bourne. Ganzel and Kelly. Each side made 7 hits and 2 errors. Cleveland bunched some hitsin the seventh and eighth innings and won from Philadelphia, 6to 5, Beatin and Sutcliffe and Gleason, Anderson aud Clements were the batteries. Philadelphia made 5 hits and 3 errors and Cleveland 8 hits and 3 errors. At Brookiyn—Brooklyn, 10; Columbus, 0. THE RECORD. The league and association records to date are as follows: ASSOCIATION. We've stopped counting. Wilmot is spoiling his record. Boston and New York are hugging each other. Pittsburg is shoving up on Cleveland for sixth hole. There is comfort in the fact that there were three other clubs defeated yesterday, anyhow. “Manager Glasscock has promised to set an elegant supper to the players of the Indian- Spolis team if they finish in fifth place.”—Phil- ad F ress. That's s very safe promise, much like the one a local merchant made here last year. He offered a baby carriage to the first Senator making three home runs in one game on the home grounds. The Boston directors are making secret nego- tiations, according toa dispatch from Omaha, for the purchase of the entire team that played in that city as a member of the western associ- ation during the present season. This fore- shadows what the league will doin case the brotherhood’s scheme materializes, There will be a base ball team in this city under any circumstances, even if it should be- long to the eastern league. The click of the turnstyle cannot be stilled in Washington. The Detroit Journal say ‘The last week of the season is close at hand, and the people who want a base ball club in this city next year will do well to turn out and see the few remaining games. If they show the managers that they still want base ball there will be next season a jJeague or American association base ball team in Detroit.” “Two big base ball clubs got badly bitten this season on their investment in high-priced tal- ent. Kansas City let go 6,000 big for Pickett and Sowders. Pickett took cold in his throwing arm a week after he joined the Cow- boys, and has been laid up since, while Sowders has been drilled to all parts of the lot by every team in the association. Pittsburg invested bi money in Conway, and he has searcely pitch: & winning game for them this season. Sonwes is trying to bring his dead arm to life with electric battery shocks.— Exchange, Washington narrowly escaped a wound th according to this, for Pickett was at one time seriously thought of for a third base cover. The Boston Globe of Monday presents some record figures, including the Saturday games. ‘These show Brouthers still in the lead as bate- Taun, with 166 base hits and an average of .376. Glasscock is second, with .345; Ewing third, with .343; Tiernan fourth, .329; Delehanty fifth, -20; O'Rourke sixth, 319, with Carroll, The others are as fol X., 304; Daly, W., 303; 300; Thompson, P., Nash, B., Beck! 27 i, B., 273: Rowe, Pi., There is quite an interesting race going on between Anson, Van Haltren, and Ryan. Van and his captain both trotted fast last week. ‘The former advanced from: .304 to .311, while Anson traveled at a 30 clip from .303 to .308. Ryan isthird with .301, two points lower than last week. Duffy is about a distance out and Will have to hustle for a place. ‘The leading batter in each team in order of standing is Ewing, Brouthers, eters | Van — McKean, Glasscock, i, and Tom iv.
