FATAL COLLISION OF TRAINS. Serious Accident on the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. ‘TWO TRAINS ON THE SAME TRACK—AN ENGINEER RILLED AND SEVERAL PERSONS INJURFD—SOME ONE BLUNDERED—STORIES OF PASSENGERS— AB INQUEST To BE HELD. A railroad accident occurred within the city limits last evening in which one man was killed and several injured. Special freight train No. 307 on the Pennsylvania road left this city for Baltimore and a few minutes be- fore 9 o'clock collided with the Philadelphia accommodation train No. 33 due atthe 6th- street depot at 8:45. The collision occurred between the eastern end of the nayy yard tun- nel and the trestle work over the Eastern branch, at the foot of Pennsylvania avenue. The two trains happened to be on the same track, owing to the fact that one of the tracks was blocked up by some derailed freight cara, Orders had been issued to the passenger train to pass from its usual track (encumbered by the freight cars Jur other one before en- tering the c was given in order to avoid delay Owin to some one’s blunder the two trains mid same track at the same time, and the first warning of danger that either engineer had was the spectacle of the head light of an approaching engine on the same track. Both engineers whistled for down brakes, but it was impossible to check the speed of the heavy trains. They crashed into each other with frightful force. The engineer of the passenger train, James Jamison of Philadelphia, was killed and his body was badly mutilated. The passengers, to the number of seventy-five or ope hundred, made a fortunate escape, none being killed. ‘They were, however, shaken up and some were bruised. The cars were badly wrecked. Six of the freight cars were thrown from the track and the engines were completely wrecked. ‘TRE KILLED AND WOUNDED. The engineer who was killed was fifty-five years old and leaves s. widow and four children in Philadelphia, where his body will be sent. The wounded are: Lewis W. Slimmer, brake- man, both arms broken and other injuries, is at Providence hospital; A. L. Dean, fireman, head cut and wrist sprained; Joseph M. Har- man, engineer, arm slightly cut a2 bruised; L. 8. Fenks, Alexandria, sprained ankle, but recovering; John’ J. Coulter. a member of the ion Veteran corps, right ankle sprained; William E. Emerson, conductor, hand and ~ injured; Benjamin Hickman, colored, injure: about the abdomen; —— Fenn, white, severely bruised, Medical assistance was soon brought to the scene of the wreck and the police ambulances conveyed the injured to their homes and to hospitals, Workmen were soon engaged in clearing the track of the wreckage, It was early this morning betore the road was in running order, and travelers in the depot as well as on the incoming trains were obliged to make the best of the situation. JAMISON'S DEAD BODY AT THE MORGUE. In the morgue, in the rear of the sixth precinct station, is the mangled body of James Jamison, engincer of the passenger train. Death must have been almost instantaneous, for there is no appearance of suffering in the rigid features of page man, ‘The right mid severed entirely just above the ankle, but it lies in its proper piace, only the ends of the crushed bones and the torn fesh and sinew in- dicating the deathly amputation. But little holds the left leg together, for the same force which cut the right foot off came very near doing the same thing for its neighbor a little below the knee. he ex; ons of the limbs arecovered with dirt and blood, and the clothing is considerably torn in several places. The dead man’s face is covered with coal dust, and as he lics on the zinc-covered board with ared handkerchief supporting his lower jaw and holding his black hair awkwardly out of'place he looks strangely like an Indian, From a wound alongside the right ear blood has dropped on to the floor. His grimy hands, which rest on his stomach, are uot even scratched, AN INQUEST TO BE HELD. Coroner Patterson went down to the morgue this morning, viewed the body and notified the police that an inquest would be held at 2 o'clock. Officer Oliver at once started out in search of a jury, and by noon had subj the following gentlemen: W. A. Peacock 2. E. Wheat,W. H. Sleeper, P. Cusick, John B. Hunt, W. H. Whale: The Pennsylvania railroad@uthorities have notas yet made any arrangements for an in- vestigation of the accident and the causes which led to it. Supt. McKeever told a Stag ris ape that some "ition would probably be en tomorrow, STORY OF A PASSENGER. John J, Coulter, a member of the Union Vet- eran corps, who lives on H street between 2d and 3d streets northwest. was on the incoming train. His right ankle wassprained. He said to a Srar reporter that when the train reached a short distance east of the tunnel it was sig- naled to stop. Heheardone of the railroad men say that the track was blocked and the train would have to go in on the left hand track. The train backed and then it started ou the left track. He thought that an accident might hay appen after changing tracks and he so remarked to a fellow passenger, He had hardly made the remark when he felt the jar of the train caused by reversing the engine. Thinking there was trouble of some kind he stood up and ntly the trains met. He was in the first car. ‘after the engines met, he said, the engine drawii the outgoing train seemed to keep on, as thor age making its way through the wreck. The car he was in was then off the track, and had it not been fer the coupling that held it to the second car the first one would have gone into the water. Finally the passengers got out of the first car, Everything was in confusion. People were running backward and forward and no one seemed to know what to do. He remembered that there was an express train due in afew minutes and in order to avoid further trouble he ran up the bpsiglecaitinn lamp. One of the railroad men over: him and went some distance out on the track aud stopped the incoming express, STATEMENT OF MR. LANDVoIGT. Mr, Edward Lundvoigt, who is a builder, his shop being at 641 Massachusetts avenue, and who resides at 804 10th street southeast, said to a Sraz reporter: “I was coming in from Glen- dale on the Philadelphia combination and was seated in the front car, where there were also many women and children. “At Bennings the train was delayed and I walked out on the platform and asked a police- man what caused the stoppage. He said there was a freight wreck further down and that our train was to be switched over to the left-hand track and go into the city in that manner, “When ihe train started I remained stan on the front platform, and there being no snd gage cur was thus enabled to see the engine completely and far down the track. The temporary injunction will prevent the heat and power company from doing anything until after the case comes up for hearing before the Court in General Term. It is possible that the case may be considered early in the October term, but if there is any considerable amount of friction between counsel the final decision of the Supreme Conrt of the District may be delayed two or three months. According to the terms of the contract made between the District Commissioners and the heat and nig company the latter is to have 500 lamps operation on December 1, and in default ue isto be a penalty, Incase the injunction is denied by ag Court in General Term the heat and power company will have action for dam- ages against Cammack et al. anes THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY. The coming session of Congress will probably be full of discussion on proposed pension legis- lation, Mr. H. Berdan of this city has already sent to Senator Davis, chairman of the Senate committe on pensions, a letter transmitting copies of four bills intended to readjust the pension lists on what be considers a fairer and more equitable basis than at present. He argues thatus the records show thats large per cent of the soldiers and officers were first treated in hospitals after they had been two years or more in service, it is fair to presume that many of those who enlisted late in the war had their diseases developed after they were mustered out of the service. The law, he says, does not allow a pension te be ited for disabili from dis- onset onubcacted ta worvioe unions can show that he was treated for such while in service, and bill No. lis designed fa view of the fact that it tam "be puoi to ile to increase the aunual 4 of Bill No. 3 is for the ot some tclief for thove who fre’ not disabled. from wounds or disease, but are becoming disabled
