Two Men Killed and Fifteen Injured at Pittsburg, Pa. ‘There wasa terrific explosion of a nataral gas main on the South Side in Pittsburg last eve- ning, which resulted in the killing of two men instantly, fatally injuring two more and seri- ously injuring some fifteen others, Booth & Flynn were testing s 30-inch natural gas main which they had laid for the Monongahela nat- ural gas company. Their workmen were test- ing the main before turning on the natural gas, by means of compressed air. They ran the pressure up to 75 pounds per square inch, when the dead cap on the end of the pipe blew out, scattering debris in every direction. Several hundred workmen employed in the iron mills near by were just returning home, and a number of them had stopped along the trench to watch the experiment. They were struck by the debris and aying, oieen 48 though a bomb had exploded. © pipe was braced with heavy timbers, and these were hurled into the crowd with terrific force. The workmen and the spectators were thrown down by the force of the explosion, and one of the Killed was hurled against a brick house and had his neck broken. A general stampede followed the explosion and a scene of the wildest excitement ensued, The cries of the injuredcould be heard for several squares. An investigation showed that two men had been kille =e and about fifteen others injured, two of them fatally. ‘he dead were conveyed to their homes and the injured who were unable to walk taken to a hospital. The aan ee are: John Miller, single, — thirty-three; John O'Connor, aged twenty- ve. Those seriously injured were: John Greiner, married, terribly cut and bruised; injured in- ternally; will die, Henry Reich. a boy, skull fractured and injured internally; will die. John Braney, miliwright, internally injured and bead cut; serious, Mr. Green, badly cut and bruised: thought to have received internal injuries; serious. Jus. Hendricks of St. Louis, Mo., both legs broken. Severance Munsich, Thos. Welch, Martin Garvey, John Schwaiter, Patrick Ryan, Frank Doyle, Jas. Duffy and Wm. Jones were struck by flying debris and cut and bruised, but none of them were seri- ously hurt, One of the Killed a Washingtonian. One of the victims of the explosion, John Connors, is supposod to be a Washingtonian, He is thought to be John Connors, a brick- layer, whose home is on North Capito! between Land M streets, He left here soon after the Johnstown flood with several other bricklayers and went to work at Johnstown. His com- ions returned home, but he went to work for the Cambria iron works, Since then it is possible that he went to Pittsburg, which is not many miles from Johnstown, Last night Mrs. Connor, his mother, received # telegram from Johnstown saying: “John is dead. [Signed] Tos, Rvsseut.” Mrs. Connor did not know who Russell was and she had inquiries made at police head- quarters, Maj. Moore then telegraphed the chief of police at Johnstown for further i formation, but has not yet received a reply. nwcatinented tabanretes For Annoying Drivers of Vehicles. Reuben Mouse, Frank Halliday and Henry Coleman, three colored boys, who are too poor to live without working and do not want to | steal, went to the Center market this morning to look for odd jobs of holding horses, carrying baekets or anything by which they could earn an honest penny. As is usual at such places the boys stood about near Pennsylvani phue and 7th street, and at the approach of vehicles they would run up and ask: “Have your horse held, mister?” ‘Tunis was considered by Police- man Loftus “disorderly conduct,” and he ar- rested the boys for “anno ig the drivers of vehicles.” The boys instead of returning home with a few hard earned pennies to assist in the support ef their families were marched to the Police Court. Judge Mills heard the testimony and said that he had been annoyed in the same manner, and fined the boys $5 each. They will the next few days | among Vagrante and criminals in the work ouRe. Wext Posrep.—The increase in the number of electric posts to serve tight, teleg: and telephone show that the town cannot be “fenced in,” as is sometimes suggested, as all her posts are used on the central streets for electric wires, A post every sixty or seventy fect is not uncommon on streets, when the law nace “that any person who shall put up y post * * * orinany way obstruct the eA coead y the city council fine of $5 anda further fine of $1 for each and every day the same shall be continued.” There seems no reason for denying to a mer- chant, on whose sidewalk a huge post is put up, the right to put another post there to display his sign or his goods. MAYBRICK’S BEHALF. Members of Parliament Join im the Movemeut—No Doubt of Her Reprieve. Many prominent members of parliament have joined in the movement in behalf of Mrs. Maybrick, and will petition the home office for reprieve, Public meetings are being arranged in London and Liverpool, as ‘n the famous Penge mystery some fifteen years ago. In that case the judge charged passionately and vira- lently against the four accused persons, three men and a woman, Alice Khodes. Despite the extreme doubt, the jury brought in « verdict of guilty against all four and they were sentenced to death, The verdict shocked public opinion and a wave of indignation swept over the country with such force that the then home secretary, Mr. Crose, called a conference of prominent men, as the result of which Alice Rhodes was unconditionally released and the male Prison- ers reprieved. It is just such a wave of ae indignation growing out of « similar cause that is pow passing over the country, NO DOUBT OF HER REPRIEVE. That Mrs. Maybrick will be reprieved there can be no doubt, and the question now seems to be whether the commutation will be to im- prisonment for life or a term of years. While the general opinion is that the woman should sentet ~ a pardon is not to be In addition to the parliamentary petition nearly every lawyer of the Liverpool circuit has signed the legal petition, and there rush of the merchants and brokers in Liver- pool, Mr. ae former business asso- ciates, to endeavor to prevent @ miscarriage of justice. The conflict of the medical testimony andthe peculiarly prejudicial charge of the judge is given as the reason for an exercise of the pardoning power. It the jurors continue to talk to reporters as they are doing they will soon convince every- body that they were incompetent to try the case and criminally negligent in not paying at- tention to the evidence and what ‘passed in court. The foreman of the jury ularly showed himself, by his answers and comments on the case, to be possessed of only a confused notion of the testimony which had been pre- sented. He did not know that Sir Charles Russell had offered in court to call witnesses who would prove that the statement made by the accused was perfettly true, and that Jus- tice Stephen refused to hear this important testimony. He admitted that he would not be any if a reprieve were granted, notwithstand- ing Bi is vote in favor of the verdict of murder, the general impression left by the interview is that the jurors allowed themselves to be swayed and ‘biased by the grossly mociten summing up of the judge, and that they a hasty lict without giving the case and the evidence any persoual consideration, This case seems to bave been as flagrant and outrageous an abuse of judicial power as ever occurred im England. JUDGE STEPHEN PROTESTS, The memorial to the government asking that Mrs, Maybrick be reprieved on the ground of the conflicting nature of the medical evidence has been signed by 300 brokers and merchants of Liverpool, Judge Stephen yeste pro- tested in court agaist the abusive letters ad- dressed to the jury. He said he thought they had conscientiously done their duty. THOSE PLY PAPERS, A New York Herald special cable from Brus- sels says: The Maybrick trial has caused al- most as great a sensation on the con®uent as in | England, L’'Independance Belge compares the case to the celebrated Lafarge affair of thirty years ago. The Brussels vewspaper has also sought to throw light upon one of the points of the trial which has remamed somewhat ob- scure, and today publishes the result of the in- teresting inquiries its reporters have made, Fly papers have been the subject of this = Mrs. Maybrick alleged that she had employed these arsenic impregnated — tor her complexion, after the example fd man women, Counsel for the prosecution ob- jected and no witnesses were luced to prove that German women m use of fly Papers, as alleged, and consequently this part br hire, Maybrick’s defense was worthless, A GERMAN CCSTOM. Another chemist named Hainaut, who also spent several years in Germany, corroborated the previous statement. He pointed out that fly papers are generally impregnated with a strong solution of quassia amara, the extremely bitter taste of which would certainly - aroused Mr. Maybrick’s suspicions had liquid containing it been given him to r+ al HOPE IN THE HOME SECRETARY, When asked what he thought of the chances of interference with the sentence on the part of the home secretary, Mr. Macklin of the firm of Rowe & Macklin, who are Mrs. Maybrick's counsel in this country, said yesterday, accord- ing to the New York Sun: “They have a curious law in England that where an adverse decision is rendered in any but a murder case an appeal can be taken to a higher court and from that to the house of lords, but, when the case is murder, the de- cision rendered by the jury is fital, and the cases where the judge's sentence has been ove ruled by the home secretary are very rare in- deed.
