In the Criminal Court, Judge Bradley, to- day, the four colored boys—Alfred Jones, Ben- jemin Watkins, Frank Pickett and Samuel Broadns—convicted of manslaughter on Tues+ day, were sentenced to the penitentiary—Jones and Watkins for five years each and Brosdus and Pickett for three years each and to pay a fine of $10 each, Ss The indictment charged them with the mar- der of Charles Bailey, by blows with stone or stick, inflicted August 19 last, causing death on September 2 following. Mr. Carrington asked the leniency of the court as to Broadus, who is now but sixteen years of age. He claimed that Broadus was not present at the time the fatal blow wus struck. He also claimed for Jones that he did not throw the rock, and ssid he was endeavoring to secure affidavits as to the character of Bailey and as to who threw the stone. In view of all the uncer- tainty he asked that he have a few days to file & motion for s new JUDGE BRADLEY REVIEWS THE CASE. ‘The court said that it was true that there was uncertainty until the defendants testified. There was an indisposition on the part of the government witnesses to tell the truth, The girl said that the man who made the assault looked like Jones, was about his size, but she would not say it was him. Does any one be- lieve that Jones did not throw the stone? [tcould not now be eaid that Gross was a convict, for the defense, put him on the stand. He saw no reason for postponing the execution of sen- tence and would im; it, and the motion for & new trial can be filed afterward, WHAT THE PRISONERS SAID, Jone: id he was not guilty and had no idea who threw the brick. Watkins said he had been found guilty on false evidence. Broadus said he didn’t know what the court was going to sentence him for. for he didn’t throw at the man. He said that Bailey cut his coat, Pickett denied that he was as there, coor’ se THE SUMMER ENCAMPMENT. Leaves of Absence for District Employes Who Belong to the National Guard.
