vie EVENING STAR, A WASHINGTON: FRipay.. " -Editor, ———— THE EVENING STAK bas tue fullest Lecal (Circutation of any Newspaper in the Wertd, and as an Advertising Medium te worth mere than all the other papers published tm Washington. See] Bow York Office: Room 93, Tribune Building. ———————————————— ‘The Star Out of Town. ‘Tue Evexrxo Sra will be sent by mail to any address in the United States or Canada for such period as may be desired, at the rate of fifty cents per month, 3 Dut all auch orders must be accompanied by the money, or the paper cannot be sent, as no accounts are kept with mail subscriptions. gp The Persian minister declares that, in view of the disrespectful, unkind and scandalous com- ment of the American press concerning both the Shah and himself, he is compelled in self- respect and in respect for his sovereign to leave the republic. By all means the minister should pack up his duds and quit the country by the earliest conveyance. Such a super- sensitive person has no fitness for diplomacy. In the first place, most of the obnoxious Ameri- can articles were based upon those which have appeared in English newspapers, and which, bad as they may be, have not been esteemed by the Shab himself sufficiently libelous to prevent his carrying out his plan of again visiting England. On his former visit to that country the piquant descriptions of the Shah's goings on published in the English papers were even more offen- sive than now, but, as said above, he has not been so thin-skinned as to allow either this or the reeent comment to prevent him from going there again. Why the ambassador should be so much more sensitive than his sovereign is not plain. In the second place, the American ministers to Persia have seta very good ex- ample by disregarding those endearing epi- thets, “Dog of a Christian,” “Stranger devil” and the like, with which the native populace greet them in the streets. They assume that their business is with the government of the empire, and not with the people who ridicule or revile them; and, as long as the government is courteous, they endure the discourtesies of the rest of Persia. It is to be regretted that, if all the stories which have been published about the Shah’s personal habits are false, some one has not corrected them in print; and, come to think of it, it is as strange as it is un- fortunate, ee ‘That some of the papers of New York should advocate the holding in that city of the pro- posed great exposition commemorative of the discovery of America, is natural enough, and creditable to their local pride. The country at large will, however, never seriously entertain that proposition. The pitiable failure of the projected international exhibition attempted there a few years ago, which had the prestige of Gen. Grant’s gre «t nam? tits head, coupled with the aftermath 0: scandal and heartburn- ing which followed the local centennial de- monstration held there last April, conspicu- ously points it out as th> place where the com- ing great Three Am>-iza’s Exposition should not be held. Tht <:ty is the commercial and financial center of the western hemisphere, and with that proud distiction she can afford te rest content. The proper place to cele- brate the discovery of the country is at its seat of government. This is ths demand of nearly all the states in the Union and of every terri- tory. New York may therefore as well accept the inevitable, and fall into line gracefully. ns ‘The Lydecker court-martial explained that officer's non-inspection of the tunnel cavities by the suggestion that these spaces, of which ‘some were as large as a house, were so “‘con- Gued.” The diff: Jty of finding room to secommodate Majo: L_decker as an inspector is to be overcome by giving him all out-of- doors in the bondless west in which to expand and inspect without eramping. There are many comforting features of the exile to Van- couver, if Major Lydecker could only bring himself to look a: the matter in the proper light, ——— -=—____ The President in his remarks at Woodstock commented upon the security frem effective outside attack which the republic's isolation furnishes. The lack of dangerous neighbors spares the nation the expense and temptation to war of a large standing army, but the secu- rity afforded by isolation should be supple- mented by that which a strong navy and effect- ive coast defenses will supply. These means of protection being secured, the republic may, as the President suggests, devote itself with untroubled mind to the solution of domestic problems. Our bright, sunny cotemporary, the Critic, has absorbed the Sunday Capital and has sacri- ficed its own name in the operation. The Daily Capita! wili be published as an afternoon Paper through the week and as a morning paper on Sunday. Ts Stak congratulates its neighbor upon this new evidence of enter- prise and prosperity. SEE Raphael, the astrologer whose prophecies are so devoutly trusted by a great multitude of the people of England, says for the 5th of July: “Be careful this day.” It is evident Raphael's calendar is not prepared with a view to Ameri- can consumption. It is the 4th on which we have to be most careful over here. The 5th takes care of itself very The rains descended as usual yesterday. ‘The cloud-supply of water is apparently inex- heustible. It is understood that the explosion of patriotic gunpowder caused yesterday's pre- cipitation of moisture. Why in thunder, light- ning, tempest and flood it has rainea so copi- ously for the preceding days and weeks is not explained. oOo Skipping the rope has become a recognized form of pugilistic training, severely testing the condition of heart. lungs and the muscles of the legs.
