Dora Strawbridge was arrested last night on the charge of obtaining money by false pre- tenses, by representing that part of her family, including her husband, had been lost in the Johnstown flood. At police headquarters she was recognized as the woman who was arrested here for forgery and false pretenses on Drs. Geo, A. Leech, %. T. Sowers and others inJuly 1887, and after conviction, through sympathy, was allowed to go under suspension of sen- tence. She personated the widow of a de- ceased physician at that time. Her arrest{last night was occasioned by a complaint made by A. P. Stewart, of the U.S. Treasurer's office, that on the 26th of June a woman with a little boy called at his house, 516 A street southeast, and presented a letter with indorsements stating that she had escaped with two children in the Johnstown flood, losing two other chil- dren and a sister, and that she desired to go to Chicago, but had not the necessary funds by $2.45. He gave her $3. Detective Mahon was assigned the case, and from the description concluded he knew her, and last night, about 10 o'clock, stopped her as she was entering Sam's hotel, where the proprietor and his fam- iiy, after listening to her graphic story of her escape from the raging waters, made her and her child comfortable. When searched at po- lice headquarters preparatory to sending her to the first precinct station, the following letter was found in her pocket: THE LETTER AND INDORSEMENTS. Ladies and Gentlemen: I arrived here from Johnstown yesterday noon, expecting to find my sister and brother, only to learn my brother had moved to Chicago four weeks ago. Through the sad disaster in Johnstown I lost my husband, two children, and youngest God spared my two wee ones to me. ll we have left are the clothes we had on our backs, I wish to go to Chicago. The only way for me to go is todo the way Iam doing—by asking aid until the required sum be raised. For my little ones’ sakes I beg your kind aid. Respectfully, Mrs. J. E. Browxe, This letter is written in a neat hand, and the indorsements were as follows: Contents of letter are true, as I have known the lady and her husband for years, A. L. Sotomons, 1207 K street northwest. Mrs. Browne and I were schoolmates. Know her sad case to be genuine and deserving of your kindest aid. Euizanetu C. Priurxe, 1206 Massachusetts avenue. Dora Strawbridge, alias Mrs, Browne, will be taken to the Police Court to-morrow. — The American Fraternal Circle. Golden Council, No. 47, A. F. C., held a meet- ing last evening in the new Golden Cross hall, corner 5th and G streets northwest. Two new members were initiated, Messrs, William Get- tinger and John M. Harris. Brief addresses were made by M. P. Caldwell, Charles L. Pat- ten, John M. Harris, Erastus C. Johnston, Isaac Bowbeer, W. G. Fearing, Hunt J. Miller and others. Mrs. F. E. Woodward gavea humorous recitation and Archie L. Falk a piano solo, The Council perfected arrangements for a pub- lic meeting or sociable in the Golden Cross hall next Monday evening. 2 esis ““We Steals, We Does.” William Sanders and Thomas Hall, small col- ored boys, were found asleep on a doorstep near 7th and K streets yesterday afternoon by Policeman Kendig. When questioned by the officer the boys said that they had no home. “What do you do for a living?” the officer asked, “We steals, we does,” one of them replied. They were arrested and taken before the Police Court this morning on a charge of vagrancy. One of them said he lived at Harmony ceme- tery and the other said his home was at New Jersey avenue and Ist street. “Why don’t you stay home?” asked the court of one of the boys, “Because I don’t want to stay there,” he re- plied. The other boy gave a similar answer. The case of Page, of Westmoreland, for violation of the postal law, was called this morning for trial. Johnson was chosen clerk of the com- mon council by a vote of twelve for him to four for Mr. 8. K. Field, the late collector. The clerk of the city council is, under the law, the town clerk. He keeps the day-book and ledger of the corporation, makes out the tax and other bills, keeps the minutes of the common council and is the custodian of its records. Mr. John- son, the new clerk, is the son of the late John T. Johnson, a democratic custom-house officer and local leader before the war. He is now en- gaged in busmess with Tackett & Marshall. The board of aldermen elected as clerk Mr. Millard P. Vincent, son of Mr. W. A. Vincent, who is connected with the insurance and min- ing firm of Wise & Co. The salary of the clerk of the council is $350 per annum, and that of the clerk of the board of aldermen $100 per annum. County Orricrrs.—The newly-elected of- ficers of Alexandria county continue to qualify by taking the oaths of office in the county court here. Mr. E. A. Greenough, justice of the 6 for Washington district; Mr. W. H. Eatin, justice for Jefferson district; J. W. Last month nine marriage licenses were granted here and two Alexandria couples were married in Washington.—The Old Dominion boat club held the state championship cup, but as may be composed of burlap. The fact of the matter is, Alexander, that you have » rashly exaggerated idea’ of your owe importance in this dreary world. You foolishly entertain the idea that if you were to die to- night the earth would shudder and wheel back. ward, a it wouldn't. The sun would rise just the same, the stars would as brightly as ere wool’ gurgie the creek merrily on its way; there would still be mar- riage and giving im marriage. You would be laid carefully away in your nicely fitting grave, my boy, and the grass would grow over and the brunette cow would eat the there wouldn't be a single jolt in the world because of your death. It is unfortunate that you have made up your mind that know it all. When you have been jostled about alittle while you wid want to go to some secluded grave-yard and weep. You will be convinced that instead of knowing it all you don't suspect anything. Man is like @ ground- hog in the path of a landslide. Alexander, if the ground-hog has sense enough to get out of the way, it is all right; but if it cocks itself up on its hind legs and looks it will be everlastingly squelehed. Man is also like a boulder by the seashore; the boulder may be a great deal bigger than the pebbles about it, but when an idle stranger fires it into the water it doesn't take any longer to cover it forever than it would cae of the pebbles. I knew a man once who could converse fiuentl; in more languages than you could shake a cord of wood at; what he didn’t know about astron- omy wasn't worth knowing: there wasn't Science or an arton which he was not an au- thority; his knowledge was simply sublime. A List of English and American Pugil- ists Killed by Their Opponents. From the New York World. While the great aim of the professors of the manly art is to settle all difficulties with na- ture’s weapons only and to do away with the deadly strife, there have been many pugilists who have met their death in the prize-ring or shortly after the fight. Malice, however, was not the cause of these unfortunate fatal ter- minations, as the surviving principal has gen- erally been acquitted on trial or received @ nominal imprisonment, and there is not a sin- gle case on record of the offender having been hanged. In most cases terminating fatally the backers of the men have been to blame for per- mitting brave fellows to be pounded into in- sensibility after nature has all but deserted them, in order, it possible, to win their wagers, The following list of fatal prize-fights is the first that has been printed: A determined mill took place in be- tween Turner and Curtis in October, 1816, end- ing in the defeat of Curtis. The odds were two to one on Curtis, who had recently been in the hospital, and who entered agamst the wishes of his friends, saying he would win or die. Turner was sentenced to two months’ imprison- ment at Newgate. War and Weston had a “turn up” on their way to the second fight between Dan Mendoza and Dick Humpbhre; ys at Odiham, January, 1758, atson was killed by Eps. the stomach. Jem Battes and Clayton fought in a April 28, 1817. Clayton was getti Ayr it when a terrific blow on the j vein ren- dered him senseless, and he died in about two hours. There was no animosity between the two men and nothing unfair in the contest. Although found guilty of manslaughter Battes was —" one shilling and imprisoned for six months. A desperate battle came off in England April 4, 1823, Sosween Watts and Smith, in which, at the end of one hour and ten minutes, Smith received a blow onthe carotid artery which rendered him senseless, and he died the next day, Scott and Brown met in England November 9, 1824, for a purse, but when time was called for the twentieth round Brown was senseless, He died in about twenty hours. On trial the jury gave their opinion that the man died of over-exertion and exonerated Scott. Owen Swift, The Little Wonder, as he was called, from having won fifteen battles out of seventeen when only twenty years of age, met and defeated Anthony — for the second time June 24, 1834, in Andova, England, for £0 a side. After fighting seventy-three rounds in two hours and six minutes Noon re- ceived a blow which proved fatal.
