SIMON CAMERON PARALYZED. The Aged ex-Senator in a Very Critical Condition. A Lancaster special to the Philadelphia Inquirer, dated yesterday, says: Gen. Simon Cameron was stricken at his country- seat, at Donegal Springs, to-day, with paralysis of the right arm and side, He was in his usual health when be arose this morning, and the attack was entirely unex- pected. His condition late to-night is critical, and the only hope of his recovery is based on his remarkable constitution. Ex-Attorney-Gen, Wayne MacVeagh and his wife and Mra. Halde- man, daughters of Gen. Cameron, are at his bedside. Senator Don Cameron and wife are in Europe. A cable dispatch was sent them to- day telling of the general's attack. Gen. Cameron had a very slight attack of paralysis about two months 5 at which time there was great alarm in family for his future. He soon recovered from it and has been almost in his usual health ever since, al- though he has been less active. A few days ago he wrote a letter to Gov. Beaver express- ing sympathy for the Johnstown sufferers and inclosing his personal check for $1,000, to be used in relieving distress at that place. He is in his ninety-first year. Last spring he cele- brated his ninetieth birthday at his Harrisburg .atwhich time he was visited by the legislature ina body. He received congratu- latory telegrams from all over the country, and although his house was thronged with callers from early morning until after midnight, he suffered not the slightest ill effects from it, THE TROUBLE NOW OVER. Gen. Hastings Settles the Difficulty with the Workingmen at Johnstown. The trouble with the workingmen at Johns- town isatanend. The difficulty can hardly be dignified by calling it a strike. Not more than 500 of the 2,500 men employed in clearing out the rivers and towns in the valleys refused to go to work this morning. Their complaints of insufficient food and wages as stated in Tux Star yesterday were laid before Gen. Hastings, who told the men that he could not help them in the matter of wages. He said he would in- vestigate their complaints about food, and if he found the laborers were not being properly fed he would take charge of that matter and have regular army ratiops issued for every man. At absequent meeting of the dis- satisfied workmen some intemperate speeches were made and SOME REFUSED TO GO TO WoRK. The refusal of these men to work did not stop operations, There were between three and four hundred men at work on the drift in the river near the railroad bridge and more than a thousand men in the different villages clearing sway the debris from the streets. Later Gen. Hastings h 4 @ consultation with Chief Engin- eer Douglas, all the sub-engineers and the con- teactors at his headquarters, The grievances of the workingmen were discussed fully and freely. Contractors McKnight and Coburn said they had ordered several carloads of provisions for their men, but it had not yetarrived. They disclaimed any intention to cut the rations of the men down and said they would give them plenty of good food assoon asit arrived. Gen, tings notified the contractors that he would appoint Col. E. W. Patton to look after the com: dey ents of the different labor camps. He told the contractors to make re- uisitions upon Col. Patton for any amount of fooa they required. He also informed them that if the laborers continued to complain Col. Patton would be directed to take charge of the commissaries and feed the men. The contrac- tors agreed to this proposition and said they would only call upon Col. Patton when their own provisions failed to arrive on time. No change was made in the wages to be paid, THE AGITATORS DISCHARGED. In the crowd of discontents there were a number of agitators. It was determined that these men should be paid off and sent out of town. Contractors McKnight and Coburn paid off about 200 men this afternoon, and the ma- jority of them were sent out of town last even- ing. The others will leave to-day, Col. Patton and Spangler vent through the laboring camps last evening and found every- thing im good shape. Everything was quiet and the men were good tempered and orderly. Gen. Hastings said: “We have been a trifle annoyed by this mis- understanding among the workmen to-day, but it has net interfered with the progress of the work to any extent. Everything is in shape to-night, and the contractors will go ahead with their work in the morning with all the men they want.” Chief Engineer Douglass last night sent orders to each of the contracting firms that they must reduce their forces of men to be- tween 400 and 500 men. This will give them as Many men as are peeded now. 4 MONUMENT TO THE UNKNOWN DEAD. Dr. Foster yesterday started a subscription for a monument to the unknown dead. He pro- poses to have the monument erected on an eminence near Prospect Hill and overlooking the unfortunate town. Sixteen bodies were found yesterday, and many of them, on account of the advanced stage of decombosition, were promptly buried after being completely ‘severed With oil The stench is becoming daily more sickening and unbearable. Acase of diphtheria developed yesterday. The victim is uow at the Ked Cross hospital. No other serious cases were reported. HYPPOLITE’S VICTORIES. ‘The Haytian Insurgent Has Not Cap- tured Port-au-Prince. A dispatch dated June 5 was received in Ni York by the steamer Saginaw from Cape Hay tian yesterday and shows that, while Hyppo- lite’s forces have gained a series of victories and Legitime’s troops are badly demoralized, the insurgent leader has not yet reached Port- su-Prince. Every town and village in the orth but one has been taken by him, however. Hyppolite was at Cape Haytian when the letter Was written. General Piquant, who commanded the second army corps, operating on the Artibonite after the battle of Mareband, May 6, retreated by St. Michael, Hincbe and Meribolais, and arrived at Port-au-Prince with some seven hundred men, the remnant (beside those left at Grand Saline) of the eight thousand or ten thousand men he hed in his command. He entered the capital on the 16th, and the next after exchang- ing some harsh words with Legitime, took refuge in the French consulate, and on the Isth, at 4 a m., was shipped on board the French man-of-war Kergualen and then trans- ferred to the Spanish mail steamer, sailing the same day for Santiago de Cuba, ‘The first army corps under the command of Anzeline Prophyta, Legitime’s minister of war, operating on the north, broke up still worse than the second corps, and without standing to fight, 443 men who managed to cross the Do- minican frontier began to submit and join the northern forces. This has been done. An- other batch of 300 men were taken prisoners between Hinthe and Los Cohabas, and with them Gens. Boissend, Jura, Antoine Pollas and several others. These have been sent under parol to Gonaives and the men have enlisted in the northern rauks. Prohyta has resigned and left the country. A new ministry has been formed. ; Mr. LL Andair, former proprietor of the Journal ¢ Peupie and minister for Liberia, has had his xequateur taken from him and has been arrested and imprisoned. Several well-to-do foreign merchants have been advised by their frie: to keep on the look out, as there are rumors that they woutd be banished, being considered friendly to the north. All letters received report the capital to be in a very un- ruly state. The newspapers are full of threats egaiust friends of the north. ————eee The Forger was a Great Romancer. 4 Kansas City dispatch says: “Albert Blake, the ex-Kansas City bell-boy, arrested in Cali- fornia for forging Cattleman Arthur Gorham's A dispatch from Indianapolis says: The su- me court has decided the case of the y Barber Knox, who was arrested and deed tor keeping open on Sunday. He is the Man Wanted for Dr. Cronin’s Murder, WHEN REMANDED TO JAIL HE BREAKS DOWN AND A CONFESSION IS EXPECTED — PREPARATIONS FOR HIS EXTRADITION—O’SULLIVAN SAID TO BE WILLING TO TELL ALL HE KNOWS, Officer John M. Collins, of Chicago, arrived in Winnipeg yesterday and identified Martin Burke as the man wanted for the Cronin mur- der. Immediately upon his arrival he pro- ceeded to the police station, and together with Chief of Police McRae, entered Burke's cell. Burke looked up as they entered and Collins remarked, ‘Well, Barke, this is a bad place to be in.” Burke replied instantly, ‘Yes, John, it is,” but a minute later denied any knowl- edge of the Chicago detective. Collins, how- ever, was satisfied, and retired with Chief Mc- Rae. He drove to the residence of Judge Bain where the usual information was sworn out. Collins then sent the following dispatch to Chief of Police Hubbard at Chicago: “I have identified the prisoner here as Martin Burke. He has employed a lawyer, but there is no chance of his getting away. Chief of Police McRae retained counsel yesterday.” This, Chief Hubbard says, is all he wanted; that he has overwhelming proof of the fellow’s guilt, and that he has not allowed himself or his sub- ordinates to give to the public half the informa- tion in bis possession. BURKE EXPECTED TO CONFESS. After Burke had been identified he was at once handcuffed and transferred from the police station to the provincial jail in the regu- lar police van, a warrant for his arrest on the charge of murder being sworn out before Judge Barnes. Collins swore that the facts would warrant the prisoner's extradition, and he was remanded. He is terribly broken down and scared, and it is believed in Winmipeg that he will make a confession before he returns to the states. Last night Assistant Glennon, of the state attorney's office, started for Springfield with the voluminous documents upon which will be based the demand for the extradition of Martin Burke at Winni On Saturday Assistant State’s Attorney Baker will probably take the paper to Washington. They mast be Ca aed by the President and Sec- retary Blaine before they go to Winnipeg. ANOTHER SUSPECT UNDER SURVEILLANCE. The police have under surveillance another suspect against whom they hope to secure evidence which will connect him with the con- spiracy. At present the evidence against him is purely circurhstantial. When the Carlson cottage revealed its terrible story one of the most promising clues which it presented was the footprints in the paint. The murderer, who painted the parlor tloor to cover the great | ff splotches of blood which marked the where Cronin fell, walked about in the his stocking feet. Soon after the fact cottage was the scene of the murder was pub- lished, with a full description of the paint- tracks and blood-zuarks, a shoemaker wrote to the police offering a valuable suggestion. He said that a well-known Irishman and Clan-na- Gael man, whose name he had seen mentioned in the newspapers in connection with the mur- der, was a customer of his and that HE HAD VERY PECULIAR FEET. A piece of the floor, about thirty inches square, was cut out with three tracks on it and was taken to police headquarters, Then the shoemaker was visited, and he was asked to produce his book in which he preserved the tracings showing the shape of his customers’ feet. The outlines of the suspected Irishman’s foot were compared with the footprints taken from the floor, and were found to correspond exactly in size and shape. Ever since this dis- covery was made the man has been watched by the police, and is still so closely guarded that he could not leave the city. The board with the paint tracks on it and the measure book of the shoemaker has been in the grand jury room for several days and have been inspected by the jurors, It is likely that the suspect will be called before the jury for examination, ICEMAN O'SULLIVAN WILL “‘SQUEAL.” P. O'Sullivan, the ice man indicted for com- plicity in the Cronin tragedy, was yesterday removed to the so-called boy's department of the jail, the recognized haven for “‘squealers,” O'Sullivan is the person whose business card and whose curious contract with the doctor for medical services were used to lure Cronin to death. The story is given out that the ice man has offered to make a clean breast of every- thing he knows. His motive for being willing to confess is alleged to be fright over the ar- rest of Burke, at Winnipeg. Considerable credit is given the ice man, but it is tempered somewhat by the suspicion that his removal is simply part of a series of shrewd tactics on the part of the authorities to break down oue or another of the suspects. O'Sullivan, it is claimed, sent yesterday to Sheriff Matson and requested an interview. The sheriff responded, and, in a brief, pointed talk, hurried to the grand jury room in search of State's Attorney Longenecker. ‘The state's attorney, it is represented, was making such encouraging progress with the grand jury that he wus reluctant to bother with any informer. This information was taken to the ice man and resulted in a still more urgent plea for a hear- ing with Mr. Longenecker. The state's attur- ney, it is said, dnally acceded to a conterenc: and without making any promises gave O'sul- livan to understand that a penitentiary was a more comfortable place than the gullows, and that if any accused person had a choice in'such matters the earlier it was evinced the better. At this point O'Sullivan was taken leave of by the ofticials, —_____4@o—__ A GIGANTIC COAL TRUST. Rumors in Philadelphia of Its Forma- tion by an English Syndicate. lace int in at the It was proclaimed in Philadelphia yesterday that an English syndicate had been formed to purchase a controlling interest in the anthra- cite companies. Rumors to this effect have been in cirenlation for some time, but no proof had yet been brought out that either an English or an American syndicate bad been formed for such a purpose. It is claimed that €100,000,000 would buy all the stock needed, and the assertion is made that an organization bas been formed with that amount of capital to buy a majority of the capital stocks of the leading coal companies, There are seven companies interested—the Reading, Lehigh Valley, New Jersey Central, Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, Delaware and Hudson, Pennsylvania Coal company, and Erie Navigation. The prices of these stocks range from about 800 per cent for Pennsylvania Coal to 48 per cent for Reading. Their present market value is about §186,500,000. ‘These companies mine or bring to market 87 per cent of the anthra- cite tonnage. The only other large operator and carrier is the Pennsylvania railroad, which handles 12 per cent of the business, he scheme is snid to be to place the stocks of the roads named in trust; purchase the out- put ef the individual operators by guarantee- ing them a profit of ents @ ton on all the coal mined, and so control the anthrucite mar- ket of the world. This scheme is firmly be- lieved in by a number of well-informed people on the street. and hints of such a deal have been going the rounds for several days, eee Beer-Drinking School Children, Mayor Chapin, of Brooklyn, yesterday re- ceived a communication from the Woman's Christian temperance league, calling his at- tention to the law bearing upon temperance in- struction in public schools, The ladies inform the mayor that a committee of the league had visited sixty-six schools and in only eleven of them were temperance text books used, and add that several teachers admitted that the boys and girls were often stupefied from the use of beer at noon meals so that they could not study. t Rich, Poor, Clean, Dirty, White, Black—All need PEARLINE.
