Srovx Crry, June 21.—This city was visited by « destructive storm of wind and rain yester- day. The wind blew at the rate of 60 miles an hour and the rain fell in torrents. A section of the viaduct of the new cable line on Jackson | street was washed out and filled with mud. The new pontoon bridge sustained heavy loss. The heavy northwest wind, combined with rushing waters, snapped the cables holding two sections of the draw, and the draws and toll-house were carried out, Sixty boats were carried out and soon broke apart. Huge piles of drift wood are stacked against the up-stream side of the bridge, and F sseme will amount to several thousand dollars to the bridge company. Re- ports received from surrounding points show it the storm was general. At Riverside park several summer-houses were blown into the Sioux river, but the occupants escaped. Cowden, of Gallatin, Tenn., secured a verdict of €2,500 against John W. Langley, of Prestonburg, Ky. Jast before his race as candidate to represent his county in the state legislature, two years ago, a hand-bill was circulated, charging Lang- ley with having spoken disparingly of Miss Cowden, who was teaching music at Preston- burg. Cutcaco, June 21.—The city authorities are arranging to comply with the alien law which takes effect July 1, and yesterday Controller Onsban furnished the heads of departments with a copy of the measure. The law makes it illegal for the city to knowingly or negligently allow an alien tobe employed by the city or | under its contracts.
