THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. CITY AND DISTRICT. &® A recently published work on “The Artof Advertising” says: “A point which will afford reliable information as to the value of a publi- cation as an advertising medium is the close- ness with which the publisher adheres to his advertising rates.” Tug Stam invariably holds to its rates; and, what is of greater importance to the advertiser, it charges everybody the same Price for the same service, This few papers do! MIDDLE MARYLAND. Flood Notes—A Colored Life-Saver— Educational and Religious. Correspondence of Ta Evento Stan. «Frepenicx, Mp., June 18. Services appropriate to the confederate deco- ration day were held in this city to-day under the auspices of the Confederate memorial asso- ciation of Frederick. A prayer was offered by Rev. C. L. Kennard, pastor of Trinity M. E. Church South, and appropriate anthems were sung. CANAL SUFFERERS—A BRAVE COLORED MAX. Col. Wm. H. Love, Col. John C. Legg and Mr. Adolph Dressel, the members of the relief committee sent along the Potomac by the city of Baltimore to relieve the flood sufferers, report that they examined intoand relieved the wants of the poor people who live in the flooded districts from Monocacy to Hancock. They sa: that “Robert Ivory, acolored man at the mout of the Monocacy, at the risk of his life made three trips in the awful flood to rescue a white family named Fox, and in which he was suc- cessful. In the meantime Ivory’s own house was washed away.” The committee made the following awards: Point of Rocks, 31 families assisted, with $100; for the town, #1,010; Berlin, 16 families assisted, $225, and @50 f>r the town; Hancock, #700. John C. Hardt and — E. Meyer. Several large droves of Chesa) and Ohio canal mules have passed throug! te city since Monday on their way from Cum- berland to Georgetown. The men in charge of them spoke in hopeless tones of the future of the canal. THE LOSS OF THE COUNTY BRIDGES. Since the loss of the county bridges by the recent flood in the Monocacy the question of absorbing interest among the people here- abouts has been: How will the county com- missioners raise the money needed for building new bridges? The present board is republican. The most feasible plan for overcoming the difficulty has been offered in ba suggestion that the commissioners borrow the necessary amount and provide the interest on the same for one year on the levy of 1889. and through their successors in January next, petition the legislature to 38 an act authorizing the county to issue bonds at 4 per cent or less to mature at stated intervals, say of five, ten, fif- teen and twenty years, This is the plan that is likely to be adopted. The sum needed will be about $100,000. Through the solicitation of the Frederick Mercantile association, Mr. Wil- son Brown, superintendent of the Frederick division of the P. R. R., has been induced to pat on an early morning train between Woods- poro’ and Frederick to bring into the city residents of the county who are unable to cross the Monocacy in any other way, now that the county bridges have been sweft away. It was something of a surprise to the Chicago authorities that Gov. Hill, of New York, re- fused to surrender Maroney and McDonald, the two men arrested in New York city on the requisition of Gov. Fifer. The New York gov- ernor denied the application without prejudice toarenewal of the case, simply upon the grounds— 1. That the application was not eee by an indictment. 2. Thatno proof whatever was presented showing that the accused are guilty of the crime charged against them, as required by the laws of this and all other states, The application was based solely uj affidavit made upon “information and MARONEY TALKS. Maroney, in an interview yesterday, said: “I Gon’t believe Sullivan had anything whatever to do with the crime. In regard to the accu- sation against myself, I will say that I have not been in Chicago but one night since October, 1887. Iwas then on my way to Omaha, in the early part of that month, and missed connec- tions with the C., B. and’ Q., and was obliged to stop over in Chicago until the next day. I can prove by dozens of People that I was in this city on May 4, when Cronin disappeared. I was engaged in obtaining signatures to a tition asking for the appointment of a frien litical position, and on one of the days 4 led on a friend in Brooklyn who was stop- mm an lief.” ping home with his sick children. Know- g the animus of Dillon and his ring, Iam certain that they would stop at nothing to down Sullivan and his friends. There is nota man in the organization who would not like to see the real murderers ar- rested and convicted, as I think this has put back our cause at least twenty years, and ma’ may eventually lead to disruption. If I thoughts livan was guilty I would be the first to de- nounce him, but I think he is as innocent as the unborn babe. The records of the Clan-na- Gael will show that I have always opposed murders or assassinations for revenge or any cause whatever. I believe that in this free country every man should essist in making the laws, and that laws should be sufficient punishment for any crime. I hope you will allow me to say that I trust that the American people will withhold their opinion in this grave matter, knowing as do that I am perfectly innocent. I don’t fear the result. I protested against having a lawyer, and I am only anxious to be allowed to go and face Dillon in a court of law and show him up. I know McDonald, and believe him to be innocent of any partici- pation in the crime. He is hard-working and industrious. and Iam satisfied he had no con- nection with the murder of Dr. Cronin.” RUMORS IN NEW YORK. It was said in New York yesterday, and not denied by Clan-na-Gael men, that the executive committee of the Clan-na-Gael met in Phila- delphia Wednesday to take measures to pre- vent Maroney and McDonald from being taken to Chicago. It is everywhere admitted that Maroney’s presence in England to answer for | several missions he has undertaken or assisted, would be desirable, and it is asserted that the society wants to get him out of the way before acertain extradition law now pending has a chance to turn him over to Scotland Yard. The officials of the Clan-na-Gael are said to be all supporters of Alexander Sullivan, men who were put in office by Sullivan's influence. ‘The air was full of rumors of new arrests. It was whispered that a considerable number of others were under surveillance and would soon be gathered in, It is true that certain persons are being watched to the extent, that, if the left New York city, they would be followed an’ located. These persons are not suspected of being directly a cessory to the murder, and if arrested would not be charged with murder. ‘The men who believe that Alexander Sullivan inspired Dr. Cronin’s death, believe that the murder was the result of a huge conspiracy, the ramifications of which involve a good many men in a number of places. If the investiga- tions at Chicago bring out proof of this, it is not unlikely that a number of men will be ar- rested charged with conspiracy. WATCHING BOLAND. Chief Hubbard, of Chicago, admitted yester- day yesterday that he had two men in Kansas City watching Michael Boland, the present re- corder of police of that city and former mem- ber of the notorious triangie. “Are you going to arrest Boland?” the chief was asked. “That will depend upon the action of the grand jury,” replied the chief, evasively. “But my men are noti in Kansas City for the purpose of arresting Mr. Boland just now.” on facts in the case are said to be that the ‘s attorney expects an indictment against Bolant. and the chief's officers‘are in Kansas City ready to take Mr. Boland when the indict- ment is returned. TO PROCURE AN INDICTMENT. The refusal of Governor Hill, of New York, to grant the application for the surrender of John J. Maroney and Charles McDonald to Illinois officers will probably result in the state’s attorney to-day urging the grand jury to at once render a partial report finding an in- dictment against oney and McDonald.
