Handy and family have gone to Oakland, Md., where they will spend the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Ric d A. Arnold have issued cards for the wedding of their daughter, Addie, to Mr. Richard W. Daly has returned to the city and will remain about two weeks, prior to her departure for Marth: Vineyard, where she wil spend the summer. Commodore Wm. K. Mayo has lately fitted up his handsome residence on Iowa circle, and he and his brother, Geo. U. Mayo, and wife are now residing there. Mrs. Geo, Mayo presides over the domestic affairs. Mrs. M. G. Watts, sister of Lieut. Graham, who was on the Trenton, lost at Samos, is vis- iting friends on O street. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Geoffrey Parsons left Washington to-day for Boston and Dublin, New Hampshire, where they will pass the summer. Mrs. {Harrison, accompanied by her father, Dr. Scott, Geo. S. Brown, Mrs. McKee's two children and three maids arrived at Cape May last evening. Mrs. Harrison and the members of her household occupy Mr. Wanamaker’s cot- tage. The suite of rooms which she will oc- cupy faces the ocean and is so arranged as to catch all its breezes. Mrs. Harrison will re- main at Cape Mayaboutamonth. Mrs. McKee will join her children some time next week. President Harrison and Postmaster-General Wanamaker expect to visit Cape May next Fri- day and remain two or three days. Mrs. Gen. Haskin and her granddanghter, Miss Ethel Purcell, left to-day for Highland Park, ll., where they will spend the summer with Mrs. Capt. Miller, whose husband is at present building Fort Sheridan, near Chicago. General and Mrs. Van Vliet expect to go to Shrewsbury, N. J., next week for the sum- mer. Mrs. R. Washington’s Liberal Contributions for the Flood Sufferers. OVER FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS IM CASH AND A LARGE QUANTITY OF CLOTHING AND SUPPLIES GIVEN BY THE CITIZENS OF THE DISTRICT TO RE- LIEVE THOSE AFFLICTED BY THE FLOODS. The amount of clothing and supplies for the flood sufferers handled by the citizens’ relief committee was very large, The total number of boxes of clothing sent away from the city was 203, distributed as follows: Johnstown, 158; Lockhaven, Pa., 9;Muncey, Pa., 8; Williams- port, Md., 9; Williamsport, Pa, 2; Chesapeake and Ohio canal, 17, LOCAL RELIEF. Quite a large quantity of supplies of clothing and food was sent to the rooms of the As- sociated Charities in this city, where they will be distributed to the needy in this city and vicinity. Mr. E. Kurtz Johnson, the treasurer of the citizen's relief committee, to-day sent s check for $100 to Upton Darby, at Seneca, Md, for distribution among the food sufferers in’ that vicinity. AN OVERDOSE OF BROMIDIA. The Sed Death of Mr. Melville C. Shu- ster. 4 powerful dose of bromidia, taken to calm disturbed nerves, was the cause of Mr. Melville ©. Shuster’s death last night Shortly after 5 o’clock Mr. Shuster, then on his way home, en- tered Appler’s restaurant in Georgetown and ordered wine. He engaged in conversation with the bartender and wasas bright and pleas- antas usual He leftthe place but soon re- turned and requested permission to rest in s room behind the bar. The privilege was sc- corded him and occasional glances at him, after he sat down in a chair, gave reasonable ground for the supposition that he was asleep. The attention of Mr. Appler was first called to Mr. fesorataculnom medloveres fell out of the chair and remained prostrate and helpless upon the floor. No one present could understand the stupor which afflicted the unfor- funate man. Mr..Cresswell, a clerk in Crop- ley’s drug store, came in and discovered an empty bottle labelled “Bromidia,” and the whole matter was at once explaine: Medical aid was at once summoned and every effort was made to give tone to the relaxed nervous a Drs. Gray, the chairman of the com- mittee organized for the relief of the Johns- town sufferers, with headquarters at the Pa- cific building, has sent a detailed report of the work of the committee to the citizens’ relief committee. He states that the total contribu- tion made through the committee amounted to $667.10. In addition a large quantity of cloth- ing and supplics was dispatched. The com- mittee was composed of the a H. J. Gray, Armat Stoddart, Mra. M. Stoddart, James H. Vermilya, Dr. 8. W. 2, Wm. Berlin, Geo. E. W. ‘etts, Miss Julia Maedel, and Mrs. Anna Wilson. The committee was organized on the evening of the 2d instant atthe residence of Mr. Armat Stoddart and went at once to work. When the general re- lief committee was organized they co-operated with them, PUBLIC SCHOOL PUPILS HELP TRE CAUSE. The entertainment given by the pupils of the Towers grammar school at Odd Fellow's hall, Navy Yard, last evening, under the manage- ment of Miss Nellie Mack, for the benefit of the Johnstown and C. and 0. sufferers, was a bril- liant success both financially and’ artistically. The hall was crowded to ite utmost capacity. The program was as follows: Opening chorus by the school; piano solo, Miss Josephine Ku- bel; wand drill, Capt. H. G. Kimball, leader; vocal solo, Miss Hattie Meades; recitation, Mr. 8. E. Kramer; flag drill, Capt. Ferree, leader; quartet, Misses Meades, Kimball, Kubel, and Simonds; military drill by the High School Prize Cadets, Capt. Ferree, leader; chorus, Good Night, by the school. The feature of the evening was an Se orm aac written for the occasion by Mrs, Seth Clark, entitled the “Johnstown Disaster,” and delivered by Mr. 8. E. Kramer. The Chinese Sunday school, which holds its meetings Sunday afternoons at the church of the Ascension, has manifested its sympathy for the flood sufferers by voluntarily contri- buting through Tuz Stag the sum of $30 for the Jobnstown sufferers and €17.25 for the un- fortunates along the canal, The Sunday school is under the charge of Mr. Browne Lawrence, as superintendent. The collections were made through the efforts of Mr. Pun War Sang and Chong Lee, who state that not one of their countrymen declined to contribute something. In addition to the money they donated un- claimed Ce mn bor hand, amounting in value to $15 to 20, which has been turned over to the proper authorities, THE “post” ENTERTAINMENT AT THE BIJOU. The entertainment given Wednesday evening atthe Bijou theater, under the auspices of the Washington Post, and Mr. Harris, the proprie- tor of the theater, for the benefit of the flood sufferers, netted the handsome sum of $258.85. The police have not yet obtained any clew as to the whereabouts of A. Monrote, the gold- smith who recently disappeared from this city after pawning a number of watches, as hereto- fore mentioned in Tux Stax, but it is thought that he isin New York. Frank Monrote, a son of the missing man, went to New York about two weeks ago. His father said that he had gone to the Paris exposition, but, notwithstand- ing that statement, Frank soon returned, and then his father went away. Thus far Inspector Block has recovered from pawnshops about fifteen watches that were given to Monrote by jewelers to repair. Hauree, of Pennsylvania, was brought from Woodbridge on the Alexandria and Fredericksburg railroad to the station house in Alexandria yesterday evening by Lieut. James Smith, of the Alexandria police force. The prisoner wasaccompanied by Mag- gie Taney, with whom he had left Phenixville, Pa., and by Geo. W. Taney, the girl's father, who had charged Hauree, as telegraphed to Tue Star yesterday, with the abduction of his daughter, The girl acquitted Haurce of ab- duction ard said she had freely gone with him. Hauree declared that they had run off together to get married, but that on arriving in Virginia they found that asthe girl was under age and both non-residents, he could not get a marriage license, He gave no reason why he did not marry the girl in this city, where there would have been no difficulty in getting a license. He professed his willingness to carry out his engagement to marry Miss Taney on their re- turn to Philadelphia, and the father, having iven his consent, the bridal patty ‘left for ‘hiladelphia and passed through this city on the evening train.
