- THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 1889 CITY AND DISTRICT. @ The principal value of Tue Evexrxa Star to advertisers is the fact that it is not thrown away after once being read, but passes throng half a dozen pairs of hands at least be- fore being tossed aside. This is the advantage presented by a family newspaper. IN EIGHTH PLACE AGAIN. The Washingtons Drop Down to Their Old Place Before Leaving for Boston. The steady downpour of rain all day yester- day soaked the grounds at Capitol park so badly that although there was no rain falling at 4:30 such a thing as a game of ball was im- possible. Thus it was that through the inac- tion of the Senators they were compelled to relinquish the proud position of seventh place, which they held for the period of one day. This result came from the victory of the In- dianapolis team over the Cleveland infants by | the score of 10 to 3. This was in turn because the Hoosiers could hit the bail and the In. fants could not. Beatin and Sutcliffe and | Burdick, Getzein and Daily were the batteries. | Indianapolis made i6 hits and 4 errors, and | Cleveland 6 hits and 3 errors. | Pittsburg downed Chicago with ease, 10 to 5, | by making 11 bits and 3 errors, while the An- sonians made 8 hits and 9 errors. The bat-| teries were Hutchinson and Sommers, and | Galvin and Miller. The only association game played was at Baltimore, where the Orioles defeated St. Louis, 8 to 3. The home team left last night for Boston, where they are billed to play four games, two on Monday next, which is Bunker Hill d: The other league games to be played to-day are as | follows: Philadelphia at New York, Cleveland | at Indianapolis and Pittsburg at Chicago. —— a MIDDLE MARYLAND. Religion and Education—Weddings— Flood Notes—Horses Killed, &e. Correspondence of The EvextNe Star. Frepenicr, Mp., June 12. John W. Kaufman, of J. F. Reynolds Post, | No. 2, G. A. Rev. Father O'Rourke, formerly of Loyola college, Baltimore, has been transferred to the novitiate here.——Rev. Dr. E. R. Eschbach this KILRAIN IN TRAINING. How the Baltimore Boy 1s Preparing to Fight Sullivan. From the Baltimore Sun. Jake Kilrain has now got down to hard train- ing, and during each day he does hard work enough for three men. His quarters are at Halstead’s hotel, on Pimlico avenue, near the city limits, and he will reside there after to- day. Charlie Mitchell, his trainer, has the reputation of being one of the cleverest in the business, while Kilrain himself is a first-class trainer. Being a temperate man and always in form, Kilrain did not have to resort to physics and then work up gradually. He was in condition to begin at once. He weighed yesterday about 204 pounds and will train down to 184 pounds. At 6 a.m. Kilrain and Mitchell start for alim- bering-up extending about one mile out and back, returning in time for a 7-o'clock breakfast. Breakfast consists of toast, one cup of wexk tea, either boiled eggs or a chop, and, if desired, a piece of fish. After breakfast they retire to their rooms and Kilrain’s face and hands are pickled, ‘The preparation which is used on him is known only to himself and his trainer, but the pe, which y pugilists use, will give an idea of what a pickle is: It is composed of three sticks of horse-radish, one | pint of whisky, one pint of white wine vinegar, and a small quantity of saltpeter, These are boiled for three hours and strained thoroughly. Then 10 cents’ worth of iodine, a small quan- tity of copperas. and two ounces of gunpowder are added. after which the concoction is shaken well and applied to the hands and face, which are made dry by heat from a fire. ‘The face is then washed in whisky and lemon juice. ‘The pickie hardens the hands and face by toughening the skin, and it prevents the faco from bruising e ‘As soon as the pickling process is completed Kilrain putson_ his “sweaters,” which are made of fine wool and are extraordinarily thick, and would keep one warm on the coldest day of winter and smother a man of ordinary physique in such weather as the present. The sweaters donned Kilram and his trainer go off for a stroll. The tramp extends about ten to fifteen miles around the count When they get tired of walking they run alittle for a change, invar- iably starting in a good run when a mile from home so that when they reach their quarters the sweaters have absorbed several pounds of Kilrain in the form of perspiration. A salt-water bath awaits them. After spong- ing off his principal Mitchell gives him a hand rubbing that would make a Turkish-bath at- tendant envious. This hand-rubbing is an im- portant feature, and go vigorously is it executed that it would almost restore circulation in an Egyptian mummy. After the bath they dress for dinner. ‘The dinner is served about 1 o'clock, and consists of boiled mutton or roast beef or steak or boiled chicken, fish, bread. d gr No potatoes, rice, or vegetables, which are consid- ered fattening, are eaten. A pint of ale is taken with dinner. After dinner the pickling process is once more gone through with, Then comes a short rest, after which a 5 or 6-mile ordin: week celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of his astorate of the Reformed church here. Fix. A. 3, Gill, of the a. ©. church here, off ciated to-~ of anew M. E. church we. of Emmitsburg boro’. and C. V. 8. The presb; tery authorized the erection of a new church at Hyland, Harford county. ‘The twenty-third anniversary of All Saint's | P. E. Sunday school was celebrated Monday night. An interesting program was rendered. | The offering on the oceasion amounted to $40, # portion of which will be sent to the tlood suf- ferers at Point of Rocks. EDUCATIONAL, | The annual commencement of the Frederick | female seminary have been in progress this week. An interesting elecutionary contest was | held Monday evening. There was a concert | last night, the proceeds from which will be de- | voted to a fund for the relief of the Johnstown | sufferers. The annual art reception was held to-day and the commencement exercises proper will take place Thursday morning. In the graduating class is one District pupil, Miss Net- | tie Gleason, of Washington. | The annual examination of the pupils of the | Maryland institute for deaf and dumb. South i Market street, this city, has been in progress | this week, and will conclude on the 15th, when the school will close for the summer. Miss M. J. Smith, one of the instructors, has gone on a trip to the Sandwich Islands. There were 22 applicants for first-grade teachers’ certificates at the annual examination here last month. Of this number only three passed. Eight were awarded second-grade certificates and eleven | failed altogether. WEDDINGS. Edward Payne, son of Joseph F. Payne, of Frederick, was married at the church of the Immaculate Conception, in Baltimore, to-day, to Miss Laura Martin, of the latter city. | A pretty wedding took place here to-day. ‘The bride was Miss Fannie E., daughter of ex- Mayor Hirem Baltzir, and the groom Mr. Wm. B. | Storm, teller in the Central National Bank | here. The ceremony was performed in the | Evangelical Lutheran church by the pastor, Rev. Luther Kublman. THE MINER WILE, CASE. | An interesting decision was rendered by the Maryland court of appeals Tuesday in what is | known here as the Miner will case. The death | of Mrs. Miner occurred at her home in this | county, in August, 1885, She bequeathed the | whole of her estate to her husband, Wm. Miner, | which fact led to the raising of a question | upon the part of the Gambrill heirs, relatives | of the dead woman, in regard to certain trust | funds. The circuit court for Frederick county | decided the case some time ago in favor of the Gambrill heirs, and the higher court has sus- tained this ruling, with the exception of a| special legacy of 6,000 in favor of Miner. FLOOD SUFFERERS. Mr. Frank B. Luffington, an officer of Purity lodge, I. O. G. T., this city, Tuesday forwarded to Rev. C. O. Isaacs, for the relief of the flood | sufferers along the Potomac, the sum of £52, the result of a festival held for the purpose by the lodge. Christian Sauerwine, a former resident of this place, lost his entire crop on his 400-acre farm near Poolesville, by the tlood. A meeting was held at the home of Mr. Geo. A QUESTION OF WAGES, Anumber of colored farm laborers held a eonvention here Monday night and decided to | demand a dollar a day for ordinary farm work | this season. C. division. y walk is taken, and when they return to the ters Kilrain devotes an hour striking the ball and swinging Indian clubs. Another rub- bing down succeeds this exercise. A light sup- per is served at 6 o'clock, With the exception of weak tea for breakfast and supper and a_pintof ale for dinner, no drink is taken, and unless the warm weather necessitates it, Kilrain will not drink half a dozen glasses of water during his training, which will not cease until the day before the fight, July 8. When supper is over he devotes two hours to playing billiards or taking some such light ex- ercise. A short walk winds up the day, and he reaches home in time to go tobed by 10 o'clock. If he should not get up at 6 o'clock the next morning {feeling sprightly, both he and his trainer would be surprised. Kilrain is a scientific boxer, and having sparred with the cleverest men in the profes- sion, he knows about ail that he is likely to learn, and consequently does not do much work in that line while training. He is working solely with the view of getting every organ, nerve, muscle, sinew and bone in such condi- tion as to be able to stand hard hitting and a long fight. In addition to the exercise described above he will devote some of his time to wrestling, for this is the style of fighting under which this battle will be conducted. Wrestling is allow- able and forms an important part of the tactics, and besides it is necessary to have the con- tracting as well as the extensor muscles prop- erly trained. Kilrain won the toss, and has the rivilege of naming the fighting-ground. He kes never been south of Alexandria, Va., and is all at sea regarding the far south. His selec- tion will be governed by advice of friends who are familiar with the different points within two hundred miles of New Orleans, La., the limit of area set by the articles of agreement. It will probably require several days before he arrives at a decision regarding the battle- ground. THE JAILED IRISH LEADER. Sullivan Applies for Discharge or Bail— Judge Tuley Will Decide To-Morrow. Master in Chancery Windes, Sullivan's lawyer, yesterday applied for a writ of habeas corpus from Judge Tuley in Chicago, which was granted and made returnable at 4o'clock. At that hour Sullivan was brought over from the jail bySheriff Matson to the county building. The applicant was represented by A. 8. Trude, Senator Dun- can, and H. F. Gilbert, while the state's attorney and Assistant State's Attorney George Baker appeared for the state. Judge Tuley asked whether the object of the proceedings was ad- mission to bail or for the discharge of the ap- plicant. “We ask first for discharge, and if {hat be not granted, then for bail,” said Mr. rude. is there a special grand jury in session?” asked the court. “Yes,” replied Mr, Longenecker; “I just them and they were considering “Then an indictment may be found while we are hearing this application?” “Yes, your honor.” “In case an indictment be found,” said Mr. Trude, “ihen we would not ask for bail.” Mr. Longenecker demurred to the petition because it did not set out the evidence given at the coroner's proceedings and the state could not be\expected to produce it. THE EVIDENCE BEFORE THE cor Mr. Trude said that the evidence adduced there was too voluminous to be brought in, and, furthermore, it was largely incompetent and | made up of the suspicions of the deceased and his friends. There was no evidence against Alexander Sullivan. Mr. Trude referred in most sarcastic terms to Luke Dillon and other witnesses before the cononer’s jury. The at- torneys argued pro and con on this point for some time After the argument it was agreed that the evidence m the case and Cronin's pa- pers should be submitted for the judge’s exam- ination as to the question of admitting Sullivan to bail. Judge Tuley agreed to give his decis- ion Friday morning and Sullivan was remanded to jail without bail. THE PETITION FOR THE WRIT was signed by Alex. Sullivan himself, and was in substance as follows: The verdict of the coroner's jury, on the strength of which he was committed, is insufficient to hold him and de- prive him of the benefit of bail. The evidence produced before the coroner’s jury on which the verdict was rendered was insufficient to justify the commitment on any charge. There Was no competent evidence, direct or circum- stantial, offered or admitted against the peti- tioner tending to prove that he was guilty of Dr. Cronin’s murder or accessory thereto, or | had guilty knowledge thereof or any knowledge j of a plot or conspiracy to accomplish the same. ‘The coroner ford sneamagi a large number of witnesses to testify to statements alleged to have been made by Cronin in his lifetime as to what Cronin suspected ir relation to Sullivan, and that the coroner periaitted a large amount of incompetent and wholly irrelevant testimony to be introduced before the jury, calculated to prejudice the jury against him, without shedding any light on the question being in- vestigated. ‘The verdict so far as it reflected on the con- duct of Sullivan was the result of passion and prejudice created by the incompetent and ir- relévant testimony admitted by the coroner. The testimony heard was so voluminous that it impracticable to set it out. Sullivan says he isnot guilty of the crime with which he is charged, and thet he has had no connection whatever with the murder of Dr. Cronin. He asks that he be brought into court at 4 o'clock this afternoon. ‘THE SPECIAL GRAND JURY. But three witnesses were heard by the special grand jury yesterday—Throckmorton, the real estate man who rented the Clark-strest rooms to “J. B. Simonds” or sy; Hatfield, who sold him the furnitare, and of the Peace Maheuey, who introduced Dr. Cronin to P. 0, Sullivan, the ice man, in order that their pe- culiar contract might be made. Most of te afternoon was taken up with the examination of the latter witness. TLANTIC CITY, N. J.-HOTFIS. BOARD for aslety’ 1G ADANS £ CO. reer eriate, arene, Real and Law building, Adantic Gity.
