The time was last evening, when the members of the convention now in session in this city boarded the steamer Corcoran as the guests of the Washington Beneficial Endowment associa- tion, At Marshall Hall the feast was nearly ready when the guests arrived. On the sward near the old mansion smoke was rising from a log fire, before which the _o shad were taking on a delicate brown hue and sending up savory and appetizing odors. Under a great tree two huge bowls were set out and on the surface of the =. mixture they contained floated mint and slices of lemon. To most of the visitors the entertainment was novel. When the expert in charge of the shad gave the word, the feast was served in. the pavilion, There was es and shad, sai«ds and abundance of vegetable dainties. Mr. Noble D. Larner, pr lent of the Washington Beneficial Endowment associa- tion, occupied the place of host and made a brief speech of welcome. ‘There was no formal speech making. but at the end of the feast, President Eldridge called out Mr. Alfred Tay- lor, of New York, who rezponded to a toast to the ladies. ‘Then there was an hour of pleas- ure-making in the grounds, Some of the mu- sical ones under the leadership of Messrs.Quincy and Fouse, filled ‘the air with song. Mr. Thomas Somerville distinguished himself at ten-pins, and Mr. Beriah Wilkins gave a wild west bition of rifle shooting at clay pipes, which made him one of the heroes of the hour. The guests included a number of ladies. Among those in the party were Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Eldridge, John T. Given, Geo. R, McChesney, Dr, T. Z. Axtelle, B. D. Avis, V. L. Sawyer, H. C. Brownell, W. 8. The Woman's Suffrage association of the District of Columbia held a meeting last night at Carroll Hall, and had a large audience. The meeting opened with an address by the first vice-president of the association, Mrs. Mohl, who spoke of the purpose of the association and of what they had done and what they hoped to do. She said that through the efforts of one of the committees of the association police ma- trons were secured for the police stations, and through the efforts of another committee the Police force was increased. She referred to other improvements which she said the associ- ation had inaugurated during the past few mouths, Mrs, Moh! was followed by Miss Maude Wal- ston, who sang several solos, and by Mrs. Rob- inson, who gave a recitation. Mrs. Tanner, the wife of the Commissioner of Pensions, was then introduced by Mrs. Mohl. Tanner is above the ara te height, and _ gray hair and a pleasant but determined face. “Tam down on the program,” said Mrs, Tan- ner, ‘for an address, but I have substituted an | original poem called ‘Justice.’ being in fact | nothing more than a discourse of Mr. and Mrs. Jones.’ [have heard this many times. I hear itall the time. Not long since [heard it in New York when a poor Irish woman tried to keep her little girl from being brought up in Chinatown by her Chinese husband. She was unsuccessful, however, and no law could be found in that great city of New York by which a mother could keep her child. I heard this again later when a German woman swore away her honor to keep her child. She swore that her Chinese husband was not the father of her child, and the child remained with her. Yes,” continued Mrs. Tanner, ‘I have heard this a number of times. Heard it in New York when the merchants there substituted cash girls at eight dollars per week for men whom they had been paying twenty dollars per week for the same work. In fact I hear it all the time ring- ing in my ears when I see women sitting side by side with men doing the same work as they and receiving but one-third as much pay.” She then read the poem, which was an appeal for justice for women. In conclusion Mrs. Tanner's poem said: “So Justice demands that we have our say, Since we are expected our taxes to pay: For in the consent of the zoverned, ail must agree, rue government is and ever shall be; And any taxation Without representation Is despotism and degradation.” Mrs. Tanner's remarks were greeted with loud applause. As she stepped forward to bow her acknowledgment, she was presented with a large bonquet. _ Her address ended the program and for some time she held an impromptu reception in the hall. a Tue Season at Poanp Sprinc.—It is ex- ected that this year will eclipse any in the his- ory of that successful summer resort.
