THE EVENING ST AR: WASHINGTON, D.C., WEDNESDAY, MAY 29, 1889 LA BLANCHE AND LUCIE. SOCIAL The Marine Knocks Out the Philadel- phian in Thirteen Rounds, Sax Franctsco, May 29.—The first of a series of contests for the middle weight champion- ship of America to be given at the rooms of the California Athletic club took place last night in , of Philadelphia, The fight was toa finish Marquis of Queens- bury rules. La Blanche was one pound heavier, wes: in at 155, and was slightly a favorite Lucie was seconded by Tommy Warren and Jack Watts, La Blanche by Paddy Gorman and Martin Murphy; Hiram Cook, referee, The first round opened at 9:20. Both men -—— cautiously, Lucie breaking ground. Blanche led with his left lightly. Lucie re- —- with his left on the mbs and pe Blanche forced him into a corner and de: him one in the wind. Lucie led with his left. La Blanche turned and it passed over his shoulder. Some rushing followed. no heavy blows being strack. In the second round La Blanche feinted with his left, and got one on the left ribs that made him puff. Lucie gots left-hand slap on the marine’s chin, followed by several swings on the latter’s ear. Aclinch followed. Lucie got one in the wind, with a stop on the chin, La Blanche held himself well together, and the round closed with some light blows. La Blanche forced Lucie against the ropes in opening the next round, but the latter got away. La Blanche left himself open and re- ceived one on the nose. Lucie reached his wind and La Blanche tapped him on the nose. Lucie returned with one on the lip, gaining first blood. In the fourth round La Blanche forced the fighting. and received some roasters in the left eye. Lucie continued to slip away from him and appeared much more nimble, getting two im on the nose and one on the wind, while La Blanche was unable to find him. La Blanche, however, made several skips and honors were about equally divided at the end of the round. Lucie led ‘for his antagonist’s wind in the fifth round and a clinch followed. The men broke and La Blanche dealt Lucie a sound blow on the ear. Lucie led several times, but gen- erally fell short. : In the sixth round La Blanche rushed and Lucie stopped him with blows on the nose and in his win La Blanche again rushed him, but was cleverly stopped. Lucie was cool, while La Blanche was breathing hard. The seventh round was a tame affair, but the men were awake in the next bout. The ma- rine drove Lucie against the ropes with his left, and they fought around the ring, Lucie finding La Blanche’s face and wind easily, La Blanche began to get warmed up, and found Lucie’s nose twice. The men sparred briskly in the ninth round, but little hard fighting was done. In the next bout, however, some brisk work was done. Lucie tickled La Blanche’s ribs sev- eral times, und the latter then got in a clean right hander on Lucie’s nose, knocking him down. Thisroused the marine, and, advancing his right foot, he knocked the Philadelphia boy down again with a terrific right hand upper cut, In the eleventh round La Blanche forced the fighting. and with right and left band swings drove Lucie from corner to corner. La Blanche’s careful generalship was telling on Lucie, who was now hitting wildly. The heav- iest blows of the fight were delivered in this and the last round. La Blanche again forced the fighting in the twelfth round, giving Lucie right and left handers in the face. Lucie broke ground and La Blanche followed him around the ring, get- ting-some guod blows. Lucie fell, but rose a May Weddings — What Fashionable People are Doing. Miss Phoebe E. Sneden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Sneden, of No. 716 4th street, and Mr. Henry S. Haight, of 11th and 8 streets and Vermont avenue, were married last evening at 8 o'clock in Wesiey chapel, corner of F and 5th streets, by the Rev. James P. Wright, stor of the church. Mr, Walter Pumphrey, Mr. Chas. Shreve, and Mr. Harry W. Chew acted as ushers, and Mr. Alfred E. Sneden, brother of the bride, attended the groom as best man. All the men of the bridal party wore favors of Puritan roses, The bride wore a traveling dress of steel white surah silk, a hat of white mul! and Neapolitan braid trimmed with white satin and spray of stephanotis. Curcaco, May 29 —A dispatch from San Fran- ciseo says: A Pacific mail steamer arrived yes- terday bringing Chinese and Japanese news. Great fires are reported in Japan which occurred on May 3. At Yokoto a thousand houses were destroyed. The fire originated in the residence quarters about 10 o'clock at night and burned for sixteen hours. Many lives were lost. The emperor subscribed over £1.000 out of his own purse for the relief of the sufferers. About 10,000 people were rendered homeless. On Oshima island an eruption took place April 13. and destroyed more t! half the houses on the island. Another peculiar disease has broken out in Tukadagun, the victims dying five hours after being attacked. A series of earthquakes was followed by the opening of the ground a thou- sand feet long by three wide. set toca STRIKING MINERS DEPRESSED. The German Authorities by Prompt Ac- tion Have Frustrated Their Plans. Lospox, May 29.—The German authorities are jubilant at the lesson which they consider they have taught the strikers in Westphalia at the cost of comparatively littie violence consid- ering the threatening aspect of affairs. Sutfti- cient coal was readily obtained from England and Belgvum, and the object of the German miners was frustrated. There was no time given for practical affiliation with the English unions, and there being a temporary glut of coal in the English market the foreign demand was promptly supplied. The striking miners are greatly depressed by the unforseen manner in which their sacrifices have been rendered nugatory, and there is a bitter feeling against the English workmen, which is not altogether deserved. AN INTERNATIONAL LABORERS’ ASSOCIATION is the dream of the most intelligent and a pos- bility of the future, but race prejudice and national jealousies are hard to overcome, while the quickness of modern communication gives empiovers au immense advantage over the em- ployed in dealing with necessities which can be produced at widely different localities. Yet the difficulty is one that will have to be met ain and again by those who traffic in human | bor, and with every recurrence the workman ain experience and confidence. SEVERE EDICTS AGAINST SOCIALISTS. The increased severity of the edicts against socialism is worthy of note. The Swedes have not been particularly noted in the past for rebelling against authority, and Americans may be interested to learn that the cause of the recent displays of socialistic activity there are attributed to discontent caused by letters received from relatives and friends who have found @ more congenial home in the United | States. The king and the first chamber have | been checked by the lower house, which still refuses to pass the bill giving the government | more power to repress, and utterly denies the | need for such « measure. The Spanish journals have made light of the agrarian disturbances near Valencia, but pri- Yate advices state that several lives were lost before the manifestations were quelled, and | that the peasantry have demanded the passage Gf laws tending to ameliorate their condition. Three of the persons arrested at the Hague for being concerned in the treasonable act of replacing the national standard bya socialist during the rejoicings there at the king of Holland's resumption of power have been re- leased. and the others will probably be let go soon, particularly as the evidence against them ak bo means convincing. e Dutch and Belgian societies formed to teach the rising generation the history eulcate the doctrines and ideas of the French revolution of a century ago, have gained a membership that has attracted the unfavorable notice of ———__ Killed His Wife and then Himself.
