When the case was called before Judge iller, Halliday failed to appear, and his col- lateral was forfeited. Burke appeared, and stated that he went to the theater, and when he walked down to ‘the old man’s row” he found but one vacant seat. He was told that the seat was engaged, but as the usher had told him that there were no reserved seats he took the vacant chair, Then Halliday came in and claimed the seat. He refused to surrenger it, and Halliday started the fight. The judge fin Halliday $5. ——_.___. A Blow With a Paving Stone. MAURICE WRIGHT KNOCKED SENSELESS—HIS AS» SAILANT, JAMES STOKES, PLEADS SELF DEFENSE. To-day in the Police Court a charge of as- sault and battery against James Stokes, a col- ored boy, was continued indefinitely to await the result of Maurice Wright's injuries. The latter is a married man and lives in Shepherd's alley. Stokes also lives there. The alleged assault, which was a serious one, was commit- ted Sunday night. Thanksgiving night Stokes had some trouble with Wright. Stokes started to enter the alley on his way home when Wright refused to let him . Stokes went away and avoided a fight, Sunday night Wright repeated his act and Stokes struck him on the back of the neck with a paving stone. The stone was thrown with such force that Sali cy was knocked senseless, He was picked up by friends and taken to his home. | Dr. King was summoned, but the injured man grew worse and Dr. Adams was also called in. ‘is morning Wright appeared to be much better. When it was supposed that Wright would die the police were notified of the assault, and last night Stokes was arrested by Sergeant Connol- ly, of the second precinct. He admitted that he threw the stone. He said that some days ago Wright’s wife whipped his (Stokes’) nephew. | He went to see Wright about the assault and | the latter threatened to assault him. On ‘Thanksgiving night he said Wright made an assault on him with a piece of iron, and Sun- day night he (Wright) attempted to use a bot- tle on him, and in self-defense he threw the were ex-Gov. Harrison Reed, of Florida, anu Judge John Rooney, of Brooklyn. Judge Rooney freely confessed that he argued for an hour the claims of ex-Senator Platt for a cab- inet position. He thought the ex-Senator had the support of nine-tenths of the w York Irish-Americans in his cabinet aspirations, and he ran over other grounds on which the ap- pointment would be justified. ‘I found Gen. Harrison an excellent listen- er,” he added laconically. Judge Rooney is an Irish-American, but he says he is sati to be called an American simply. “You can depend upon it,” he said, “that the next ad- ministration will be a thoroughly American one. We prs a in the ~_ de- partment, and no shilly. ying in foreign licy. There will be no toadyiam to Great Britein and no truckling to foreign interests. Gen. Harrison is an admirable man and a level-headed statesman.” MR, MORTON UNCOMMUNICATIVE, It is uncertain whether Mr. Mortnn accom- plished any political work while at Indianapolis or not. In some quarters it is asserted he re- turned very much disappointed. To a Sun re- porter, however, Mr. Morton said: “The trip was entirely a social matter, and had no other icance. General and Mra. Harrison invited Mrs. Morton and myself to make such a visit some time ago, but duri the campaign I could not find an opportunity. As toany questions concerning the cabinet. or anything else connected with the new adminis- tration, Mr. Morton had nothing whatever to say. His own words were: am very sorry that I have no information ve that would be useful to you. The for- mation of the cabinet is really, if you will think of it, a long way ahead.” Mr. Platt does not seem to have seen Mr. Mor- ton yet, but it is idle to suppose that there has nm no communication between them. Mr. Platt was equally reticent last evening, how- ever, and professed a lack of information if not of interest in the m: . A gentleman at the Fifth Avenue hotel, who was quite the reverse of reticent, said: “It is all settled. It will be a Blaine cabinet, let me tell you, and Mr. Platt will be the Secretary of the Treasury.” Another one, a city official, said when asked whether there was any danger that New York would be left out altogether on account of the contention here over cabinet places : ‘* Not the slightest. I have not seen any signs of any Miller to make a contention.” 4 DENIAL THAT SALISBURY'S GOVERNMENT ER PRESSED AN INIZNTION TO DELAY AK APPOINT- In the house of commons last evening Mr, Labouchere censured Loi4 Salisbury for hie intention to delay the cessor until the new had bee: to know that during the last fishing season there had been no ain between and Americans.
