By this letter any doubts which may bave remained after the publication of its predecessor from ence, concerning the ‘writer's political intentions and aspirations, eught to be wholly removed. He says plainly that if the convention were to offer him the Presidential nomination he could not accept it. Inasmuch as Mr. Blaine to the knowledge of every one could, without writing the Florence letter, have secured the Chicago nomination by an over- whelming vote, and in a manner which would not have aroused new animosities to decrease nis enhances of election, Tue Stax accepted that letter as written in entire good faith for the sole purpose of taking Mr. Blaine out of the presidential race. If the design of the letter bad been to IncFease the writer's chances of election, if not of nomination, the political move was palpably a stupid one, and not even Mr. Blatne’s enemies accuse him of stupidity. The Paris letter !s the natural supple- ment fo the one from Florence, rendered necessary by the miscoustruction of the first document by a few persons, ed 1, in connection with the talk about inating Judge Thurman for Vice-President, that every occupant of that place who was more tam Sixty years old when elected has died in office, The list is lmited to five, and all the names are well known to readers of American history: Clinton, Gerry, King, Wilson and Hen- rick, Judge Thurman would be seventy-five Years old within a few days of his election, it elected, and hence, as regards the probabilities of survival, would have fifteen years on the wrong side of the account. Wile ft 1s doubtless true that some men of eighty are capable ot more | enduring effort than some of fifty, the rule is precisely the reverse, Judge Thurman, however, has probably put a stop to further discusston of This subject by bis statement: “If the people beileve me to be an honest man, they will let me ee ¢ man Who sniffs suspiciously at all the esof James G. As the “Republican” had it in its report of the 20th ‘& visitor to the Palais Royal without feeling the ‘Opening’ was » popular success, The rewarks of the visitors, the vim and enersy of those in authority, and the good nature and brightness THE MEN'S DEPARTMENT. ‘The men have been better cared for than the ladies Souvenirs of the “Opening” sre many and generous. Gentlemen will appreciate the following practical hints: You may secure the 50c. Scarfs for 37c. a piece during the “‘Opening” The surprise is how they can be sold for 60c., much less 37c., for you will see in the window Fisk, Clark & Flagg’s “Flexible” knot scarfs.and also their new bows:‘the Four-in-Hand Scarfsin a hun- drad patterns, and two other shapes of Knot Scarfs, and ais the Washing India Silk Windsor Scarfs of Fisk, Clark & Fiagy, and all st 37c. during the “Opening.” ‘These were the Scarfs that were being sold by dozens, in fact, as fast as the young men cowld wrap them. AND THE UNDERWEAR Certainly the 50c. gar- ments are superior for the money, as shown by the silk stitching, the extra pieces at weak points, the sizes to suit every one and tie vericty, There are the improved shape Jean Drawers at 50c., the English Balbriggan Undershirts at 50c., the colored Merino Underwear at 50c., the Gauze and Goseamer-wetght Under Garments at 50c. During the “Opening” the price is 46c. for ‘this underwear. 250. SOCKS SELL FOR 2ic., and you may choose from the plain English Balbriggan Socks, the All-one-color Socks with white toes aud heels, the fancy stripes ones, or from those stamped “Fast Black,” and which, of course, are ali black. The quantities sold are indicative of their worth. THE “COON” COLLARS were in popular demand. Just imawine warranted all-linen Cuffs for 18c. a pair and Collars for 11c. each. Such prices prevail during “Opening.” THE “PALAIS ROYAL” DRESS SHIR’ is a “chestnut” in one sense of the word, for most peo- ple know of it and for eleven years have wondered how it can be sold at 85e. The “Opening” price being 79c., those who habitually wear this shirt should know it, A BUSY MORNING FOR UMBRELLAS. ‘The Palais Royal has the credit of introducing the “Gloria” Cloth Umbrellas to Washington; made of silk and wool. They have the appearance of all silk, with three times its durability. ‘The large sizes at $1.75 are reduced for the opening to $1.59; those with gold and sterling silver tops from 82.20 to $1.98. The $2.75 il-Boiled Silk Umbreilas seem to have the confidence of the patrons of the Palais Koyal, for many were sold this morning. The “Opening” prices 82.48. IN FACT, EVERYTHING FOR MEN Is being offered at surprising prices. Gloves, Hand- kerchiefs, Traveling Satchels, even Brushes, Combs, ‘and Towels are on the Souvenir List at reduced prices, SO MUCH FOR MEN. Too much for them when it is considered how much more can be sold the ladies. We enter by the other door to find the Ladies’ Underwear and Hosiery De- partment, and it may be said from this morning's ex- perience that when women get all to themselves and mean business they are not the same meek-eyed, sub- dued and lovely creatures that themen generally think them tobe. But an “Opening Day” and Souvenirs, and the notice “close at 12:30 o'clock,” should make the writer draw his pencil through above sentence, but there—let it go. BUT ABOUT THE UNDERWEAR. Can you think of Ribbed Jersey-Fitting Vests for 29 cents, aud not condone a little scramble for them. 1c. instead of 25e. for Jersey-fitting Vests, with low necks, ‘was a Souvenir appreciated by some. The delicate and lovely shades of the Ribbed Silk finished Lisle Vests reduced from 75e. to 69e. seemed to better suit the majority of this mornins’s visitors. The fine Silk Vests sold well—some as high as $5.68, though mostly those at @1 each. a: A SCRAMBLE FOR STOCKINGS. Whether a fact, or the artfulness of the sales girls to. sell as many as possible before 12:30 o'clock, it was jewed the supply of Richelieu Rib Lisle Thread Hose, reuced from GSc. to 50c., was running short. There wasascramble for them. “C. and G.” and “Gold Medal” could be heard constantly r-peated. THE FAST BLACK HOSE are shown in Cotton, Silk and Lisle for ladies, men and children. Even the tiny little black Socks for babies. THE CENTER BARGAIN TABLE had for its load 44c. Lisle Hose reduced to 35¢.; 85c.
