THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. THE EVENING STAR. WASHIN GTON: -Angust 22, 1887. Washington, and much greater than that of all the other daily papers here added togeth hose who leave the city during the summer can have The Star mailed to them for any length of time, and the address changed as often as destreds £97 Mail subscriptions must be invariably paid in edvance, at the rate of 50 cents per month, for the term desired. ‘The United Labor party, and the Union Labor Party, and the socialists, and the communists, ‘and the anarchists are all bitterly opposed to each other in the State of New York, Dut each proposes tohave ahand in the political fight next fall Moreover, the clatmof each is that it, and it alone, deserves recognition as the representative of the working classes; so that, when the laborer and the artisan come to choose between their self-constituted advocates, they will find themselves in a serious quandary. Mean- while the old parties look on with mixed feelings In New York city and its immediate neighborhood the vote of the working people is so generally democratic that any discus ston in the direction of a new labor party must hurt the democrats more than the republican; and the republicans therefore look with complacency upon the movement, regarding it as a Just offset to the defection they have suffered themselves at the hands of the prohibitionists. In the country, on the other hand, there 18 more republican than democratic quaking. ‘The Syracuse platform holds out certain covert inducements to the agricultur- 4sts to come into the fold, and more open ones have been offered by Mr. George in his recent writings and speeches, while the men who rep- resent him in the country have beea most energetic in the past in the promotion of anti- monopoly clubs and farmers’ alliances, More- over, the state 1s dotted all over with manufacturing communities, ranging in size and ‘mportance from Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica down to Amsterdam, Canastota, and Seneca Falls. ‘The capitalists who own the factories are protec tonists almost to aman, and their help are duly imbued with the idea that what fs their em- ployer’s taterest 1s their own interest also. In every big contest, therefore, the mills and shops roll out a handsome republican majority which goes down, as the politicians express it, “to meet the democratic majority at Harlem river.” It cannot safely be predicted which of the old parties will suffer the more from defections ia con- sequence of the new movement. If the working- men and farmers through the interior of the State wake bold to break away from thelr old moorings they Will make a cut in the republican vote that may equal or exceed the cut made in New York city’s democratic vote. The split among the labor reformers themselves {s still 2n uncertain quan uty. It may result in no one of their organiza- tons’ getting dangerously powerful of itselx, and Yet the effect of the loss of all these ballot-bearers toeither or both of the old parties may be 80 se- rious as to keep everything in New York state Polltics upset for years to come. ee A curious turn bas been given tothe affair of Lipski, who was condemned to death in England for murder some time ago, by the announcement that he has confessed his guilt. It may be remem- bered that when the day set for the execution of his sentence was almost at hand, the Pall Malt Gazette published new evidence, which seemed to be conclusive of the man’s innocence. It pro- fessed to have obtained this matter confidentially from the convict’s counsel, and to have broken faith because tt regarded a human Ife as worth more than any professional pledge. The Home Secretary, apparently owing to a long-standing feud between himself and the editor of the paper, refused to interfere. The matter was carried to te Queen herself, who lent @ charitable ear to the appeal, and ordered a respite for the con- demned, Now, if the news from London may be believed, having caused all this commotion, Lipski suddenly confounds his friends by admitting the | Justice of his punishment. It 1s barely possible that the story of the confession 1s untrue, having Deen circulated for political purposes. Mr. Mat- ‘thews, who refused a respite and was overruled by the Queen, has been in trouble so often of late that he would probably grasp gladly at any op- portunity to rehabilitate his reputation, On tue Other hand, however, it ts noteworthy that, tor ‘some cause or other, the proportion of confessions by convicts in Great Britain, under the shadow of the gallows, is very much larger than among our own people; and whereas an American in Lipski’s plight would be likely to keep his own counsel, there 1s no lack of precedents for his reported course in the annals of crime in the mother pountry. ———— An effort will doubtless be made toexcite public feeling in this country against the Mexicans, and inferentially against our own diplomatic authori- Mes, for the hanging, at Hermosillo, of an alleged American citizen convicted of murder. The claim will be made that he had not as much of a chance ‘or his life before the Mexican courts as he would aave had before those of hisown country. In a ‘neasure, there 1s ground for such a complaint. fhe murder was committed in 1885. The sus- vected man was tried, found guilty, and sentenced wo death in June, 1886, and the hanging took place om the 22d of July, 1887. The thirteen months in- tervening have been spent tn carrying appeals to the higher courts. How have American convicts fared in their own country, meanwhile? The most notable murder cases tried here last Year were those of Brooks, for the killing 2€ Preller, and of the Chicago anarchists charged with responsibility for the fatal Domb-throwing at the Haymarket meeting. The anarchists were convicted Just one year ago Sat— urday, and have enjoyed a rather luxurious exist- ence, accompanied with an abundance of the notoriety they all crave, ever since. Brooks was convicted on the 6th of June, and 1s still alive to tell the tale, with a pretty fatr prospect of sur- ‘viving half the persons engaged in his prosecu- ton, It ts quite posstbie, therefore, that if O’Brien, the American murderer in Mexico, had traveled two hundred miles further north to com- mit bis erime, he might have made a longer, if hut @ more successful, fight for his life. A Savoyard who had brought a dancing bear al the way across the ocean for exhfbition in this country, Was rendered dfsconsolate last week by & decision of the collector of customs at New York Uhat the bear would be permitted to land only on condition that he be kept out of the streets. The Jaw is very strict tn New York about beara. They are permitted to be shown to the pubitc only in cages or on ‘change. ‘The dancing variety are con- Mined almost exclusively to the latter place, and strangers in the city are much entertained by their antics on a day when prices have unexpect- edly Degun to go up, STANDARD REMEDIES GIVE INSTANT ‘natin, diarrhes, sununer = U. ust, aad care rhe ccnipltints chlor cholera urbe stints colds, affections of throat snd lungs, and diseases o Jot Por sale by ail drogelsts, and Stones rt Bersedy Con 1209 Gat te.” Ta. 16S ee EVER AND AGUE, GOUT, CuoUr, Fae by Btendanl Rheumadie We SUMMER je Hemedy.° ¥ SUFFERING FROM AFFECTION OF THE Protease Standard Cough Syrup will relieve sud permanently cure yo ae Wu Is I: ‘That men will not be straight fn all transactions of & business nature?
