IS SHE A CENTERBOARDER? A Startling Suggestion About the Scotch Yacht Thistle. From the New York Sun. ‘The most startling explanation of the mystery at~ tending the launching of the new Scotch cutter, the ‘Thistle, on the Clyde last Tuesday, has been sug- gested by Lieut. Henn, the owner of the Galatea, He remarked the other night in the New York ‘Yacht Ciub’s bouse that he would not be surprised ifthe Thistle had a centerboard. This set the yachtsmen talking and speculating. The cable accounts of the launching were recalled and dis- cussed. It may be remembered that the ambi- tious cup hunter was guarded to prevent anyone but workmen from approaching her while she was onthe ways. Pieces of scantling were fastened athwartsbips on her keel, about her staes and over her. Canvass was stretched over these, her the appearance of a big oblong white box. “The wer part of the canvas and framework was torn after she was launched, but she was still en- nidden above the water line by canvas. as. and Wm. Bell, Designer Watson and the meiabers of the syndicate which Dullt the yacht were present at the launch, There must have been sometht nes that they wanted to conce: man yesterday. “I would ne ‘surprised to Dear that she has, or s to have, a centerboard. A cutter with her Beata and depth would be in the nature Of an experiment, and Scotchmen are 20- torlously more practical than experimental. They have appropriated one feature of the American sloop, and why should they hesitate in taking anotiler and a much more important one? De- Signer Watson spent several months examining models over here before he designed the Thisile. Ido not believe that an experimental cutter with ‘2 feet and 3 inches beam and a depth of 14 feet and 1 inch, nearly a foot deeper than the Galatea, Would have much of a show in a race with oué of our big sloops. What a tower of canvas she would require to overcome her great displace- ment! It seems very probable to me that she is to have a center ‘and that her bull under waters as slender as the Mayflower's, and her keel much deeper. In that case a centerboard ‘Would be necessary to make her stand up in wind- ‘ward work.” Secretary Wm. York, of the Royal Clyde Yacht Club, in his challenge Gn behalf of Mr. James Bell Wo sail the Thistle for the America cup, did not refer to the Thistle asa cutter. He merely said she was cutter rigged. This observation is also applicable to the Mayflower and the Puritan. ne Thistle 1s booked for the race from South End to Harwich in the regatta of the New Thames Yaeht Clubon May 28, and she will then be re- quired to show Whether or not she is a Yankee Sloop in disguise. —-ee—__ BULWER’S WIFE. A Painful Story Great ‘There has just been issued in London, says the Philadelphia Telegraph,a book of painful interest.
