NO TIDINGS YET OF HENRY SCHOFIELD, OF THE ‘ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE. ‘Nothing has yet been heard of Henry Schofield, theelerk in the Adjutant General’s office, who mysteriously disappeared from his home, No. 1224 ‘7th street northwest, on the 22d of last month. It was thought that he drew $1,000 from the bank on ‘ue day before bis disappearance, and, having holiday on Washington’s birthday, it was sup. ‘that he went to Alexandria. Friends of Schofield are inclined to think that some perso Knowing he had the money In _his possession, an That he carried a valuable gold watch, followed him to Alexandria or Mt. ANUESTED IN BALTIMORE ON A CHARGE OF SWINDLING IN THIS CITY. THE ANTI-BOB-TAIL LEAGUE. ‘The Movement Along the Fourteenth ‘Street Line—A Committee to See Presi- dent Hurt. ‘A meeting of citizens who travel on the 14th street railroad line was held at the residence of Prof. King, 1319 Q street, last evening, tor the pur- pose of listening to the report of the committee appointed at the last meeting to call upon the ‘Commissioners and decide upon a further course of action. Among those present was Thomas M. Crouch, the assistant superintendent of the road, in charge of the 14th street branch, After the en- tire subject had been discussed as to what remedies were available to redress the wrongs complained of, tn case the company refused to do anything, Prot. King suddenly turned to Mr. Crouch and said: “Here is a man who can tell us just what Mr. Hurt will do. He can hit the nail’on the head the first time.” “Mr. Hurt 1s the head of that nail,” sald Mr. Crouch. “You will have to see him.” He was asked to sign the petition, or anti-fare box pledge, and humorously invited to contribute 2 dollar to the cause. He excused himself with a good-natured laugh for the latter by ‘that he had not come prepared, and said that if he con- tributed anything it would be to therafiroad com- pany, as it was needed more by the company, he thought, than by the persons present, ‘Mr. Crouch’s statement of the necessitous condition of the railroad company excited & good natured jug) ‘THE INTERVIEW WITH THE COMMISSIONERS. Prof. King, as chairman of the committee ap- pointed to wait on the Commissioners, stated that they saw Commissioners Webb and Wheatley, and while those gentlemen acknowledged that the ser- vice on the 14th street road was insuMicient, they said that they had no power in the premises. One Commissioner sugxested a resort to the courts, the other added that the people had better make a legal tender of the fares and allow the company to furnish an agent to receive the fares. The Commissioners said that they would refer the matter to thelr attorney, and send the committee a written reply. One of the gentlemen present called attention to the fact that Commissioner Ludlow had expressed the same sentiments in an interview in THE Star. SIGNING THE PLEDGE. Prof. King sald that only about one-third of the petitions distributed for signatures had been re- turned, but they had already received enough to show that, the patrons of the line were in hearty accord with this movement. He displayed a large roll of paper, which he sald contained 180 signa- tures of the ‘best people along the road. He was astounded by the unanimity of sentiment dis. played on this subject, and they already had enough names to insurethe success of the move- ment. In order, however, that they should pro- ceed with Justice and fairness towards every one concerned, he moved that a committee be ap- pointed to wait upon Mr. Hurt, inform him of the action of the meeting, and as him what he pro- ed to do. Pojudge Holliday, the president of the meeting, Dr. Schaefer, August Petersen, Prot. F. W. Clarke, and others discussed the proper method of future Procedure at considerable length. Some suggested tuat Mr. Hurt would probably want to delay mat- ters by saying that they had no cars; that they expected Cor change the present system to's cable road; that he would haveto consult the directors, and in other ways endeavor to try to avold Immediate action. In order to prevent this a resolution was finally adopted 1nstructing the committee to call upon President Hurt, and tn the event that the interview with the said president and his reply to the committee is not satisfactory, then they are empowered to confer with the Her- dic tine tn to placing herdics on 14th street. ‘The committee was also authorized to call on the Attorney General and to confer with him in re- gard to proceedings by quo warranto to compel the railroad company to furnish the modern im- provements and facilities for travel on the 14th street branch of the road as required by the ninth section of their charter. ‘A COMMITTEE APPOINTED. ‘The committee appointed was as follows: Prof. Harry King, Capt. Tanner, R. C. Gwynn, August | Petersen, and Prof. F. W. Clarke. It was decided | that the committee should hasten matters so as to report to the next meeting to be held Saturday night at the same place, and then it would be pos- sible to Nx a date when the compact signed by the residents should go into effect, if 1t was necessary to resort to such astep. a’ ‘Tae POWRIL COLLECTION OF PaiNTINGs.—Messrs, Walter B.
