THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTO FHUNSDAY. ‘The Evening Star has a reaular. permanent bona fide daily circulation more than trebie that of any other daily paper published in ‘Washington, and much greater than that of all the other daily papers here added together. ‘The rafiroad presidents who have been inter- viewed on the subject are practically unanimous imsaying that the President ofthe United States has made a happy choice of Inter-state commerce commissioners. Some of the comments are char- acteristic. Jay Gould pays a compliment to Mr. Morrison for his honesty. Chauncey M. Depew ‘says that “Schoonmaker, of our state, 1s well fitted for his new duties.” The two gentlemen have practised at the same bar, which, under certain conditions, gives lawyers a high respect for each other's abilities. Charles P. Clark, who, in spite of vigorous pushing, did not get a place on the commission, remarks, more in sorrow than in anger: “I confess that I had hoped for the appoint- ment of at least one practical railroad man.” Samuel Sloan believes that “the lawyers are needed to enforce such an act as the Inter-state commerce law.” Thisis the critical view of a President whose continuous road crosses the ‘boundaries of New York, New Jersey and Penn- sylvania, and who will feel the full force of the Jaw with every ton of freight shipped from Oswego to New York city, and every load of coal carried from the Lackawanna mines to tde-water. $$ ‘The Cleary jury breaks an admirable record in ‘the New York boodie aldermen’s prosecutions. ‘The question which agitates the district attor- ney’s office now is whether the disagreement was caused by Mr. Dougherty’s eloquence, somebody's money, Miss Cleary’s beauty, or the osculatory ‘performances of the old woman who figured 30 con- sspicuously in the scene that last day. The one principle established by this trial seems to be that ‘there is nothing suspicious in a poor man’s being found suddenly with ten thousand-dollar bills in ‘his possession, or keeping three thousand dollars im paper currrency locked in atin box in asafe Gepoait vault. There are some parts of the world ‘where such a state of things would astonish every- one who learned of it; but New York isa city sué generis, especially in its aldermanic department. a Gen. Redvers Buller will turn over his under. secretaryship for Ireland to Gen. R. H. Sankey. Buller was too frank of speech, propably, for so delicate a position under a Tory government, An ‘under secretary who is so imprudent as to report that the rich and rapacious landlord needs over hauling as well as the half-clothed, half-red, and Sometimes restless tenant, had better be taken Gut of politics and sent back to the army, where he learned this uncomfortable habit of telling the — Oo ‘The new aqueduct bridge ought probably to be Dullt with a draw, but Congress failed to provide for one, and to avoid inconvenient delay the bridge inust be constructed without it. It the bridge proves to be an obstruction to navigation the mat- ter will come up again, but for the present adraw- less bridge seems compulsory, ee With two feet of snow in Western Connecticut, passable roads in some parts of Central New ‘ork, and three railway passenger trains stalled in five (ot drifts in the Pennsylvania mountains, it ts scarcely to be wondered that so many north- erners find Washington an ideal dwelling-place at ‘Ubis season of the Fear. ee Governor Wetmore will run again, since Rhode Island demands it. Mayor Harrison consents, as Chicago yearns for him. Reluctant candidates must remember that the politician who hesitates 18 lost. ——_——_+ = —___ Puck's cartoon, emphasizing the difference between Judge Hilton’s and Mr. Corcoran’s ‘way of disposing of a great collection of pictures isa happy hit. ee ‘The Herdic Company think that it 1s an {1 14th Tuasxs. ‘Thanks to that pretty brunette young lady who, on looking in our show window yesterday, remarked: “I think their millinery work ia just grand.” The sdver- tising man, who overheard the remark, refers to the young lady with the Seal Visite, trimmed with ball trimming. ‘We received orders for twenty-one Bonnets and Hats yesterday.
