Many Surprises to Both Sides—Frank Hurd’s Defeat. ‘Special Dispatch to Tax EvENivo Stak. ‘CoLUMBUS, OHIO, Nov. 8.—The Ohio election yesterday provided many surprises to both Political parties, but those that came to the re- Publicans were of the most agreeable kind. Taken as a whole the republicans of Columbus did not win the victory that was anticipated, and in this they have the best of reasons for feeling sore over the result in the county. The democrats carried everything despite the feeling that pre- vatled in the public mind in regard to the tally sheet forgeries of a year ago and the circum- stantial evidence recently brought out crim- inating the clerk and ex-prosecuting attorney. ‘The vote cast was very large and money was Used withont stint, The result in the state has been clearly foreshadowed in these dispatches. The defeatot Frank Hurd in the tenth district, while saticipated by many. was hardly looked for,as Hurd bad majority of nearly 2,000 at bis back. The re- publicans have elected fiiteen of the twenty-one Congressmen, but in the seventh district the ‘vote is very close, and atone o'clock indications int to the ‘election of Campbell. The jefeat of Townsend in the twenty-first district ‘was a great surprise to everybody not well in formed regarding the local differences amon} the republicans in Cleveland. Mr. Townsen undoubtedly owes his deteut to the fact that in former years he has knifed other candidates in the buck, notably Mr, Buruett two years ago, whose friends mude ‘thelr promise wo retuliate if the opportunity ever presented itself, and this promise it appears was kept with rare regard to the pledge. Almost any other candidate would have been elected. (Dispatches this morning Indicate that Crouse, in the twentleth district, is elected by about 1,200 majority. To ihe seventh district, Gen. Litule is probubly defeated. Gen. Ken- nedy in the eighin district has a majority of Rot less then 1,200, and perbaps it may reach 2,000. ‘The repuviicuns made heavy gains in some of the rock ribbed democratic counties and in most of the cities. The prohibition vote ‘Will foot up about 15,000. Se VIRGINIA. How the New Congressional Delegation : Stands. RicuMonp, VA., Nov. 3.—The Virginia con- gressionai delegation stands as follows: First district, Brown, rep.; second, Bowden, rep.; third, Wise, dem.; fourth, Gaines, rep.; fifth, Brown, rep.; sixth, Hopkins, K. of £.; O'Ferrall, dem.; éighth, Lee, dem.; ninth, Bowen, rep.; tenth, Yost, rep. ‘The democrats lose five Representatives. The news from the first district 1s ratner meager, and although by the returns now in the repub: lican candidate is elected, there isa possibility that the democrats may Win, LYNcHBURG, VA., Nov. 3.--Hopkins, the labor candidate, is Undoubtedly elecied to Congress from the sixth district, over Griffin, regular democrat, DELAWARE. The Democrats Elect Everything and Insure Senator Gray's Retarn. Winateron, Dex., Nov. 3.—Biggs, dem., for governor hus a majority in the stute of over 5,000 over Hoffecker, pro. The vote for Pyle, the eleventh-hour gubernatorial nominee ot the Young Meu’s Republican ciub, of, this city, is insignificant. ‘The republicans took but little Part in the election, Tue democrats elect every- ing, Including a legislative ticket, which se cures’ the re-e.ection of George Gray to the United States Sevute. MICHIGAN. The Republicans Figure Out a Plural- ity of Ten Thousand. DerRort, Mic, Nov. 3.—Close estimates on the election in this state place the republican plurality at 7,000. This is based on the vote Of two years ago, while the reports so far re- ceived ‘show general republican guins which would Increase this figure. As the returns show gains when compared with a much larger vote, there seems ground for the claim of the republican committee to 10,000 plurality. ‘The new Senator will be # republican without doubt, but just how large @ majority ip tue state legislature will vole for him is not yet known. It now appears that there will not be less than 23 more republicans on Joint ballot than tusionists, . WISCONSIN. Returns Coming in Slowly—A Labor ‘ Victory in Milwaukee. MILWAUKEE, Wis, Nov. 3,—Returns from the state continue to come in slowly. As yet noghing bus been received to change estimates made last night. Gov. Rusk’s plurality will be trom 20,000 to 25,000. The complexion of the Wisconsin congressivnal delegation will remain unchanged, the retirement 0. a republican from the fourin istrict being offset by the election of Richard Guenther, rep., in the second district over Arthur k. Delahey, dem. Tue state legl- islature is republican without @ doubt. itis esUmated that the republicans will have a majority of trom 20 ty 25 on joint baliot, In Minwaukee county the lavor ticket made a clean sweep, electing the entire county ticket anda tuember of Congre See Mr. Davitt Feeling Cheerfal.
