Mr. Henry George is defeated in his contest for the mayoralty of New York. Yet it must, by no meuns, be assumed that he is not a sub- Ject for covgratuiations. He is a scholar first, and s politician afterward. The deieat of his Political aspirations this fail will leave bim bis Winter free for philosophical speculation and suthorsbip, He wiil make agreat deal more money throngh the sale of bis works for having been brought x0 conspicuously before the pub- lic, and his economic theories can scarcely fuil to win some disciples through the widening of his circle of readers, Had ne been elected, he would soon have dropped into the common- place routine pursued by other mayors, and the more heroic features of his career would have Deen lost sight of altogether, to the detriment Of his work and of bis future personal prestige. But of more value to him, i! used aright, than money, or honors, or literary jeisure, will be the experience which he has gained in bis hotly contested canvass, not merely in his capacity asa political candidate, but asa citt- zen. He has learned inoue sweeping lesson ‘What some other philosophers have lived and Gied without discovering—that society, deep down in its beart, respects itself, however Mueb it may grumble now and then at its own shortcomings. As long as Mr. George pro- ceeded with his electioneering work on a sound basis, proposing only the peaceful and gradual accomplishment of the reforms be had espoused, the intelligent workingmen were with bim toa man, and the middle and upper strata In active trade, the retired capitalists and the liberal professions were so divided In their preferences as to give little comfort to the old parties. But tue moment the red flag was hoisted over George meetings without a re- buke from the lips of the candidate, and when mob-rulers of the Justus Sciwab type shared the platiorm with him, there was a general awakening to the true significance of the sitau- tion. Mr. George could not have prevented communists and anarchists from supporting ‘him, it is true, but it was in his power to make all the world understand that they and he bad | nothing in common, and that he washed bis bands of their uninvited interierence in his campaign. Here is where he showed bis one serious weakness; and capital and labor, commerce ant scholarship becume alarmed. Here and there a man of conspicuous intellectual foree and personal responsibility stood by the apos- ‘Ue of the new dispensation; but for the most part it became a question, who could get away and form sume other affiliation the quickest. Society's self-respect had come to the suriace. Nothing that savored of hostitity to law and order could be tolerated. Neither of the oid Party organizations was a model ot ‘virtue, but the suecess of either was to be preferred to any- thing which would encourage tue internal ene- maies of the republic. The lesson of Mr. George's experience is all the more striking in view of the handsome vote he polled in spite of the adverse conditions just noted. The vision of what might have ‘been ‘will serve only to intensify tne stern outlines of what is. The times were ripe for such a move- ment ashe had begun. The discontent of the working people of New York with the gross mismanagement of the city government bythe Old parties, offered flattering prospects to the newcomer with his reforms. Mr.George’s wéll- known private character raised him above the suspicion of sordid designs in polities. The man was there, and the opportunity was there; but ‘the red rag of the commune fell like a pall over doth, —— - —___ There were three young republicans in the foreground vf national politics in the sprirg of 1884. All three were hostile to the nomina- tion of Mr. Blaine, but each pursued a different course after the Chicago convention bad issued ite ultimatum. Henry Cabot Lodge returned to Boston and remained in the harness of his party. Jobn F. Andrew joined tie bolters fairlyand squarely, announcing bis purpose and reasons in terms which no one could mis- construe. Tueodore Roosevelt, willing neither tosurrender nor to bolt, and hoping to escape the consequences of any decided action, sub- mitted to one oF two equivocal interviews and then betook himself to his ranch in the far THE EVENING STAR) Taw Tuorsoay Axo Farmar ARE AGAIN THE REGULAR ‘WEEKLY REMNANT AND BARGAIN SALE Days oF LaNSBURGH & BRO. Mr. Lodge, who put the best face on his discomflture two years ago, has been elected a Fepresentative in Congress; Mr. Andrew, who boldly placed himse:t in opposition, has made @ close pull for the governorship of Massuenu- setts on the ticket of his new associates, while ‘Mr. Roosevelt, who was neither the oue thing nor tne other, comes in third In the race for mayor ot New York city. There is, no doubt that what the peovle lixe im a young man In polities in straightforwardness, They may not aiways approve bis course or share bis opin- jons, but they respect his possession of a back- bone. ————— - ‘When President Cleveland first tormulated his po.icy ot civil service retorm we heard a Good deal said about the opposition it would meet with in the north aud the general dispo ‘sition of the southern people toapproveoris. Yet itis Virginia tbat throws away its democratic Seats in Congress with a reckless prodigality; it ‘win Kentuexy that Speaker Carlisle, a warm friend of the administration and a civil service Tetormer of the practical sort, has his vote eut down to a mere skeleton of its former self; and it is North Carolina that lets Representative Cox be defeated in convention and developes a sudden fancy for anti-democratic prociivities 4m her delegation. On the otherhand, it ts Mas- sachusetts that pushes young Andrew almost to the front, New Hampshire that threatens to break her straight republican record in the ‘House, and Minnesota that polis so close a vote as to leave the issue In doubt for a day. Have these things any meaning, or are they mere ac- Cidente of politics ? ——_— -—____ The receipt of at least seven thousand more ‘Votes than the most liberal estimates of tne Opposition had granted him, makes tne figure Of Henry George toom up as « possible candi- ate for the presidency in 1988. There is little Goapt thot the iavor pur.y will set up acandi- date. Mr. Powderly has fewer chances for the honor now than he had beiore the dissensions between the Knighis of Labor aud tue trade unions became so marked; but Mr. George hus been involved in no factional coutroversies, ‘Tuere is nothing to prevent his being the But- Jer—tne disturbing element and uuknown quantity—in the canvass of two years hence. Ifany such design is in bis mind, let us hope that he will take time by the forelock, and be- gin at once the proceedings which shail divorce his name and personality trom everything in the shape of outia’ SS —— Yesterday's elections demonstrated two facts pretty clearly. First, that the federal admin- {stration Is not so unpopular with its own purty ‘gs somre of its censors would like to make out; ‘and, second, that the American clty with the largest number of working people, poor people ‘and citizens of foreign birth is not yet ready to eelare the commune. + ____ ‘Who will pay the bills for the red ink wasted im printing on New York newspaper margins ‘@ warping to the gentle reader not to throw ‘away bis vote on Hewitt? About ninety thou- sand citizens threw away their votes in spite of this advice, and red ink is quoted this morning below paras un electioneering agency. $< —— In Pennsylvania the prouibisionists have taken about the same insignificant place as in Maine. Mr. Blaine’s live campaign in both ‘staies seems to have driveu the deserters from both parties back into the ranks, $$ qa ‘The state of Wisconsin presents her compli- ‘ments to the city of New York, and hopes she may ve enjoying the same blessing of popular Joyalty to law and detestativn of anarchy. _————<—— It looks as if the V! nia republicans ‘thas with bin. ever, to secure good as well as really cheap commodi- tes.
