Sing, THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C.. WEDNESDAY# OCTOBER 20, 1886-SUPPLEMENT. REFUSE ROCK THAT PANNED OUT A FORTUNE IN TWO MONTHS. A telegram from Ishpenting, 3tleb man named John f. Jones, who was generally supposed to be a tramp, and who dressed like one, appeared here two months ago, and, after working fora while about different mines, of- fered twenty-five ceuts a ton for a pile of refuse Tock at the Winthrope Hematic company's mines, the money to be paid as the Tock Was removed. Jones said be thought he could make a little sometining oif the rock, The company Was surprised one day when Jones set a force of men at work sorting the rock and carting off the ore. Jones also bought other piles of rock at th mares. It now tratapires that the rock pans out one- half good ore, for which Jones received $5.50 a ton, » ‘She Winthrope pile alone contained five hundred thousand tous of rock and netted Jones over $1,000,000, Other piles have netted him about $4,000,000. The work has been con- ducted under the very eyes of the mill owners, who have regarded the rock piles as worthless tention to Jones. 1 has leeked out that the Jones ore has been shipped largely to Joliet, Ill. The news came buck from that point and has cre- ated a great sensation. Jones appeared in_his own carriage to-day and is treated as a Jeading citizen. He can buy no more rock piles for twenty-five cents a t ‘The owners are going about in large numbers sampling the heaps of Tetuse which dot the mining fleids. soe Flames Flashed from His Eyes. The man, however, denies this statement, but confirms the story of the peculiar electric phenomena, and declares Limself deeply interested froma scientific point of view. Popular excitement has been so great since the story of the sinister power of Master Brough ‘Was circulated that the father bas felt impelled Wo move away, and bas gone to reside on the other side of’the San Joaquin river, taking yeluge with his family in cottage in the cor ton wood timber, along way from Village or railroad.
