CANOES IN A BREEZE—THE RACES OF THE WASHINGTON CANOE CLUB. The first of a series of three cance sailing Faces to be held this season took place over the course of the Washington Canoe club on Satur- day last. Those who were fortunate enough to be in the vicinity of the river front about 5 o'clock Saturday evening had the pleasure of seeing one of the prettiest sights that is ever seen in that locality, as the race was sailed in a good breeze. There 'were twelve canoes entered. Jor the race, but only seven started, and of these five only went over the course, which was from the canoe club's house, near the {aot of High street, to and around buoy No. 7, about a mile and «half down stream, making a three mile Tace, which, as progress in one direction gener- ally’is made by tacking, makes from five to ten miles to be sailed by each canoe (dependent of course, upon wind and tide), which is all that the limited time before sunset would allow. The Whistiewing, a very small canvas canoe with tny lateen ‘sails, was sent over the line on the starboard tack, the wind blowing right up stream, making a dead beat to the buoy at 1:50, followed by the Iola at 4:52 and the etrel, carrying @ heavy lateen mainsail and smail'daudy sail, at 5:5:4. The Waterwitch, famous for her successful tilts with schooners and large vessels in the lower Potomac on the club's May cruise, when she sailed under the name of “Mermaid,” poked her long slim bows across the line a minute later, followed by the new Mermaid after the same interval. The flagship Meteor, under the commodore’s skill- ful handling, bad slipped across between the Iola and’ the Petrel at exactly 5:4:50. ‘The Mermaid crossed the finish line in 49 min- utes and 50 seconds atter starting; the Petrel 7 iinutes later, and the Waterwitch 4 minutes behind the Petrel. The flagship caught up to within 13 minutes of the Waterwiteb, and the Jola by yrim determination and hard sitting got in about an hour and ten minutes after- wards. The little Whistlewing ran well enough while the wind lasted, but her skipper lacked the staying qualities of the Iola’s commander, and she caine Lome under aspruce breeze; timé not taken. ‘The Belle got off and her time was taken, but some confusion existing In the minds of the judges as to whether she was sail- ing forwards or backwards, is was taken again ‘as she drifted back, the skipper and crew with double paddles vainly urging her in the other direction. er luck is hoped for next time, but for the present “Jones he pays the freight.” The next race will be held September 11, and the concluding race Octover 2. ‘The prizes will bea gold medal for the canoe with the best record—under Tredwen’s time allowance—and silken banuers for second and third prizes, Prot. Theo. Ingalls King acted as judge, and ‘Mr, Brennan as time keeper in Saturday's con- test. —— HELD FOR THE GRAND JURY.—The case of Frank Brooks, the negro rough who shot at Mr. Henry Keller, Sunday morning, near the corner i 4th and H Streets, us published in yesterday's FAK, seas tried in the Police Court yesterday afternoon and he was held in $500 bonds for the action of the grand jury, A Two-Story Brick House, 422 84 street northeast, will be sold to-morrow afternoon at 6 o'clock.
