THE EVENING __THE EVENING STAR HOLIDAY GOODS. HOLIDAY GOODS. STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C. HOLIDAY GOODS. ‘THURSDAY, D WASHINGTON —=—— CROSBY 5. NOYES... ‘The Evening Mtar has a regular, permanent bona fide dailv elreulation mere than treble that of any other daily paper pubhahed te Washington, and equal to that of all the ether uiter. A NEW STORY BY MES. BURNETT. Extraordinary Literary Attractions for the New THE STAR of Saturday, January 2d, will con tain the first part of an original novelette by Washington's favorite novelist, MRS. FRANCIS HODGSON BURNETT, author of “That Lass 0’ Lowrie’s,” etc., ele., entitled “MUCH ADO.” This story. which is marked by the best charac- teristics of ite talented author, will run through Jour mumbers of the Saturday double-sheet STAR, and, asit is copyrighted, its perusal can be en- joyed only by the readers of this journal and those of @ few other papers published at widely sepavaied pointe which are associated with it in this new and popular feature of daily journalism. Readers of THE STAR will find this noveiette not only a source of enjoyment to themselves, but Gliterawy entertainment well worthy the compli- ‘ment of deing sent to absent friends. Copies of the double-sheet STAR containing it may be had at the counter wrapped ready for address for TWO CENTS, or stamped for mailing at THREE CENTS, each, ee Inreply toa letter from Mr. Keppler of Puek, im which that gentleman asked the President tostamp as faise a paragraph which misrepre- sented Mr. Keppler’s relations with the Presi- dent, Mr. Cleveland writes somewhat tartly ‘that if a man nowadays seeks to correct mis- representations about himself in the news- papers he will be a very busy person. President Cleveland no doubt remembers the bitter and unjust attacks made upon him dur- ing the heat of the campaign, and in the in- formality of s personal correspondence with a Jellow-vietim he genoralizes somewhat broadly. Like no less a wiseacre than Solomon in comment of the worthy Scoteh divine on this passage that had Solomon lived in our day he might have made the observation at his leisure. Atis certainly as true now as in Falstaft’s day ‘that the world is much given to lying. But itis slsoa fact, as everyone knows who 4s practically familiar with newspaper offices, ‘that the tendency in journalism is towards truth and accuracy, instead of towards abuse and intentional misrepresentation. A reputa- tion for fairness and carefulness is as valuable tos newspaper as to an individual or a busi- ness firm. There are times when the news- papers seem like a nest of hornets, but even at the worst the tone of the press is much better to-day than in former epochs, as may be seen if ‘any one will look through the dusty files of the Journals which circulated in the days of “the fathers.” The modern newspaper is far more accurate and truthful and candid than the sheets of thirty and fifty years ago, as Presi- dent Cleveland will probably acknowledge. For, ass rule, he has bimself been treated far more civilly and fairly by the republican press than would have been the case @ generation rel oe ‘The year now closing is remarkable for the umber of illustrious men who died within its mits. Not to speak of any below the highest Grade of distinction, the necrology of 1885 in- eludes the names of Gen. Grant, Vice President Hendricks, Cardinal McCloskey, Yictor Hugo, ‘W. H. Vanderbilt, and Sir Moses Montefiore. And it would scarcely be proper not to enlarge ‘the list so. as to include Gen. McClellan, Prince Frederick Charles, Gen. Gordon, Robert ‘Toombs, Franz Abt, and John McCuliough. Yet, by consulting the files of old newspapers 4 would be found that each sear, on looking back over it, was thought to be “remarkable” for its distinguished dead. The path of glory, ‘as we all remember, leads but to the grave. As a buman generation is about thirty-five years, each year bears off its quota of the “rich and great” asof the general mass. Probably, if a moralist of a mathematical turn of mind were t@ make alist of famous men and divide it by thirty-five ne would get pretty near to the size ‘Supr of food for both man and beast. The market value of the three crops is put at one Billiom Gollars. A nation that can take this ‘sum of money yearly from the soil is in no par- ht on financial and economic subjects. This years ‘crop of cereals is suid to be the largest un record, im potut of volume, and if equally distributed would give each inhabitant a ration of fitty- Unree bushels, or a bushel a week, quite enough tokeep the wolf from the door; ‘if, that is, the wolves are properiy distributed, too. _——————— If the idea was to corral a troop of Congress men in a banquet hail and get them to commit ‘themselves, under the influence of a good din- ner, on questions, last night's fes- Another increase of the public debt is pre.
