NEVADA CLAIMED BY THE DEMOCRATS. ‘The Voting in New York and Brook- lyn—The Irish Vote for Blaine inNew Work Heavier Than Has Seen Esti- mated. —_-__ Special Dispatch to Tax Evento Stan, New Yorx, November 4 ‘The national republican committee, up to 1:30 Pp. m., have received a large nuinber of dispatches from all parts of the country. They generally Teport rainy weather throughout Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan, and agree that an immense vote Is being polled. In this state the weather iscloudy, but ‘the rain hasceased. Their advices as tothe balloting show that in Brooklyn the independent republican Vote Is quite as large ‘as has been claimed, and Promises to give Cleveland a majority in Kings ‘county exceeding, it is believed, 15,000, ‘The Irish Vote for Blaine in this elty 1s reported from most of the precincts below 62a street to be much larger than has been estimated. The election of Grant, Tammany candidate for mayor, 1s very generally conceded. S$. P. Brown, formerly a well-known re- publican in Washington, but a voter here, cast & vote for Grant for mayor, but voted for the Blaine electors. Hundreds of the republicans are doing the same thing and getting Blaine votes from the democrats in return. Dispatches from Buffalo, Rochester, Cohoes and Oswego claim decided re- publican gains. Al the democratic headquarters all of their dis- patches agree that a large vote had been polled early, and that there has been but little trading done on the local ticket in this city up to noon and a one by Tammany hall. They report John Kelly ‘as true to Cleveland. Their dispatehes from Indl- gna say that the prohibition vote Is cutting into the republican ticket in several cities, and with the utinost confidence predict a democratic triumph in that state. ‘They also have reported decided demo- cratic gains In Toledo, Ohio. The committee's ad- vices from Nevada say that state will go for Cleve- land, but will have a legislature favorable to Sena- tor Jones’ re-election. Their dispatches from Cali fornia say the state 1s close, and republican advices for the first time admit that California ts in danger. Telegrams from Bridgeport and Meriden, Conn, Feport slight republican gains, Qw.a ——— IN CENTRAL NEW YORK. The Vote in Utica—Defections Reported from Both Republican and Demo- cratic Ranks. Special Dispatch to THE EVENING STAR. Unica, N. ¥., November 4. Cold, windy and wet weather have somewhat abated the ardor of both parties in this region to- day, but still an unusually heavy vote ts being polled. The independents and stalwarts are held- ing out well, some of them going so far as to work at the polls for Cleveland. The democrats feel good over the outlook, and say that republi- cans whom they have had no reason to regard as Dolters have come up and voted for Cleveland, The democrats claim gainsin the old republican strongholds of Utica, ‘The third ward, which usu- ally gives about 150 repubilcan majority, will not, democrats say, give over 60 this year. In the fourth ward, in which Senator Conkling’s home 1s located. the democrats also expect large gaina On the other hand, Cleveland wiil not get the usual demo- cratic majority in the strongholds of that party. Feeling here runs high. The stalwarts are more bitterly hostile to Blaine and outspoken in their support of Cleveland than the democrats. Rumors that Congressman Spriggs, present democratic Representative from this disict, and who 1s run- ning again, 13 trading Cleveland for votes for him- self, are being industriously circulated. These rumors may cause the defeatot Mr. Spriggs, as many dem- erats are cutting him for this alleged treachery Mr. Spriggs has repeatedly denied these rumors" Advices Irom over the state report a very heavy vote, but give no indication of how things are going. s —_—>— 5 THE SIXTH MARYLAND DISTRICT. MecComaw Election Conceded. Special dispatch to Taz Evenrxe Stan, COLRSVILLE, MONTGOMERY Co., MD. ‘MeComas’ (rep.) election to Congress is conceded here. Ward 1 Buffalo for Him. Burrato, N. ¥., November 4—The day opened cold, rainy and very dlsagreeable, but cleared up and thesun shone brightly at 10 o'clock. The elec- tion {8 passing off quietly. A few individuals have been arrested on charges of tllegal registration and nothing except an‘occasional street Nght in the lower Wards of the city, which have been quickly Suppressed by the police, has occurred worthy ot note. ‘The tndications point to the largest vote ever polled Im this city. At each of the polling places the number awaiting an opportunity to vote unusually large. In the ninth ward, strongly Tepublican, in whicn Governor Cleveland yoves, thee ts an'unusually strong effort being made to carry It for him. Voters are importuned as a mat- ter of pride due the city to vote for the governor, and there 1s an evident friendly regard for him, tt 1s believed, strong enough tocarry the ward tor him. In the first and eighth wards, always strongly democratic, the democratic’ electors have placed two’ nominees for aldermen in each of them, and a strong effort ts being made by the adherents of each of the nominees for their choice, while there 1s strong talk of a number of the voters trading off electoral tickets for their aldermanic candidates, The betting in the city is about even, while light odds are given for Blaine in the county. In the pool combinations a sample of the pools are New York, New Jersey and Con- necticut, democratic chotee, 724; saine combina- tion, republican cholce, 540. Gov. Cleveland Votes. ‘There was a large number of persons awaiting at the polling place where Gov. Cleveland votes to greet him and witness his voting. At afew min- tes before 8 o'cleck he appeared. | He was supplied pith a straight detnoeracie ket, and, taking up his position at the foot of the column, he patiently awalted his turn to vote’ When his’ turn came he simply said to the polling clerk: “1s 1t all right?” and upon being answered in the affirmative, passed on. Hantronp, Conx., November 4—A very heavy ‘Yote is being polled all through Connecticut. The ‘Weather being pleasant and warm insures a full Yote in republican strongholds in the country se0- tons. Both parties are claiming the state at noon to-day. No disturbances at the polls are reported and the election in this city is remarkably quiet. United States deputy marshals are at the polls, Dut are not needed. Both the democratic and republican tickets are receiving their usual Vote. The independents and Butler men are very gonerally returning to the parties with which they ‘were originally identified. The prohibitionists only fre holding together. VIRGINIA. Libbey, Republican, Likely to be Elected From the Norfolk District. BETTING ON THE RESULT OP THE RLECTION—PECU- LIAR WAGERS MADE—REPUBLICANS EISKING MONEY. ON THE POSSIBILITY OF BLAINE CARRYING A SOUTHERN STATE—DISCUSSING THE NEWS AND THE PROBABILITIES. ‘The rainy weather to-day was a subject of very general comment with regard to its possible effect, upon the voting. Of course nothing but the elec- ‘on was discussed anywhere. Deinocrats generally ‘seemed to welcome the rain as a sort of ally, say- ing that democrats turn out better in bad weather than republicans, Early tn the forenoon people gathered in little knots along the streets, where- ‘ever shelter was offered from the rain, and com- pared notes and opinions These discussions fre- quently produced bets. ‘The betting ran, as yesterday, in favor of Cleve- land on New York, and democrats here appeared to pluck up a little courage on the general results for to-day they offeredeven money on Cleveland's election. One of the mbst peculiar bets made was Proposed by a republican anda government ein- ploxe. ‘It was an offer of $100’even that if Blaine 1s eaten he “will beadead man insix months” ‘The det Te promptly taken. One republican bet $0 that Harrison, democratic candidate for gov- enor of Illinois, will not carry Cooke county, in which Chicago is altuated. ‘Another bet $50 to'15, and another bet $200 to $120 that Blaine will be erected. A democrat bet a $50 overcoat with a re- publican that Cleveland will beat Blaine 50,000 votes in New York. A ublican made a bet of s100even that neither Cleveland nor Hendricks carry either the ward, city or county in whieh they live. Another republican Dot &0 that ‘there will not be @ solid southern electoral vote tor Cleveland. ‘These, bowever, were exceptional bets. As a rule the betting was pretty nearly even. “One democrat bet two to one ut eland will carry New York and New Jersey. On Massachusetts the a ees about three to one in favor of the repul ‘On Indiana and Connecticut it Was even. Several bets that Cleveland carry peecnen: have been mate One feature of the Ut was & ing on the ot ae at bales tase fer of $100 even that Cleveland will carry every southern state was promptly taken, and several Dets that Blaine will get some votes (number and states not ac nated) in the south were taken. ‘The New York papers were grabbed with avidity and thelr contents closely studied, It was not an uncommon spectacle to see aman reading aloud the dispatches of the New York papers to an anx- ious crowd about it, It was easy enough to deter- mine the politics of the reader, und frequently of his auditors, by the paper he read from. If it was the Tribune or Sun the assemblage was invariably Fepubliean, but when the World, Herala or Times Supplied ue information that stamped the crowd a8 democratic, ‘4 DISPATCH FROM BUFFALO.
