Both committees claim the election of President at 10 o'clock this morning, but the returns favor Cleveland; if it shall appear that New Jersey has given him the majority, that scattering returns BOW seem to show, and which the democraticcom- mittee positively claim. The state of New York will glve Cleveland from 12,000 to 16,000 plurality. Cleveland's plurality in Connecticut will be about. 2,000. There is no indication that he has lost any of the 153 votes in the south hitherto assigned to him. There is no conclusive news from Indiana. If we add to these 158 votes from the south the 36 votes of New York, the 9 votes of New Jersey, and the 6 votes of Connecticut, the total Is 204. A ma- Jority of the entire number of electoral votes is 201. Later.—There probably never was In the history Of politics so many false dispatches sent over the ‘wires in the interest of betting as there was last night before midnight. At4a m. they gave the state to Cleve- land or Blaine, just a8 one believed the figures. ‘The republican committee do not concede Cleve- land’s election at this hour—ten a. m—but claim New York for Biaine. Later.—In this state the democrats have elected 18 of the #4 Congressmen, while the republicans have carried the. aeavubly, glecting about as many members as they had last year, when the number was 72, This insures a republican United States Senator, to be elected next spring. Cloxe Vote in Connecticut—_New Ham) shire Close, But Probably Republi- can. ‘The following dispatches have been recelved here: New Haven, November 5.—The Connecticut legislature is republican to both branches and will elect a U.S. Senator. The republican state ticket will probably have to be elected by the legislavure. ‘There is a large St. John vote. The presidential vote is very close. (Signed) LyNDE Harrison, Chairman Republican Committee. Coxcoxp, N. H., November 5.—The state 1s close, but has probably gone republican by a small majority. (Signed) C. F. Stone, Chairman Democratic State Committee, ‘The New York Tribune “Hopeful for Blaine.” The Tribune this morning, extra, says: “HOPEFUL FOR BLAINE—LEADING CLEVELAND AND GAINING—NINETY-1WO VOTES IN DOUBT—BLAINE APP/KENTLY HAS 163 VOTES CERTAIN, AND CLEVELAND 141—NEW YORK PROBABLY REPUBLI- CAN BY 5,000 OR LESS—GAINS IN THE SOUTH.’ “The returns from the several states come in slowly, partly because of the bad weather, and the result on the President is in doubt at the time of going to press. Blaine apparently has 168 electoral votes certain and Cleveland 141. Eight states, casting 103 electoral votes, are in doubt or have not. been heard from. The latest returns from New York Indicate a republican majority of 5,000 or lesa, In New York city the democratic plu- rality #8 over 42,000, and in Kings over fifteen thousand. The republicans make gains in Albany, Chemung and Monroe couuties, The delegation in Congress seems to be eveniy divided, each party having 17 members. The assembly 1s republican by about 98 majority. Wisconsin 1s republican by 15,000 plurality. - Although no campaign work has ‘been done since the September election, Blatne’s plurality in Maine Js about thirty thousand. Ohio gives from twenty-five to thirty thousand for Blaine. Indiana ts claimed by both parties on yery meager returns. The republican plurality in Massachusetts Is estimated at 10,000. Blaine’s plurality in Pennsylvania Ig estimated at 55,000, his plurality in Philadelphia being 25,000. The re- publicans made large gains in rural districts) New Hampshire gives Blatne 30,000 plurality and elects two republican Congressmen. In Missouri the democratic plurality of 55,000 four years ago 1s cut down to about 35,000. Virginia isin doubt and Is claimed by both parties. The, republican gains are large.” GW. The Official Count Needed to Decide. Special Dispatch to Taz Evemmne Stan: New Yor, November 5. At 11 @ m. there were immense crowds at the headquarters of both committees, and intense ex- citement in all of the streets and public places over the possible doubt of the great result. All Sorts of fears and speculations were indulged in a3 to @ probable repetition of the events of 1876, and another electoral commission. The democratic ‘committee say that Cleveland's election is settled beyond a doubt, and that he bas carried New York by 10,000 plurality. The republican committee claim Blaine’s election by 6,400, This is based on a percentage of alns in 727 precinctsyet to be heard rom. The Divpute Over the Vote in New York City—A Recount in Progress. Later.—One of the greatest elements of dispute continues to be the returns from New York county. The republicans tnstst that the majority 1s 42,180. The demoeratic returns are 53,120, Where the error occurred and by whom reported 1s a mystery. ‘The. Associated Press first made the Increase. ‘The Tepublican committee say that thelr additions are based on the oMicial returns of the inspector of election. The error, one way or the other, promised tosettle the state. A recount is in progress. Connecticut Conceded tothe Democrats —Gen, Mahone Claims Virginia to be Republican. * Naw Yors, November 5, 12:29 p.m ‘There 1s nothing definite here from Indiana. ‘The republicans concede Connecticut to the dem- Ocrats on the national ticket by 700 majority, and claim Harrison, republican, for governor, by 2,000 majority. Gen. Mahone telegraphs that Virginia has gone republican, ‘The General Opinion in New York is that Cleveland is Elected. An extra Journal at 11 a.m. concedes Cleveland's, election by 2,000 plurality in thestate. OMicial re- turns may be required to decide the result, but the general opinion here among republicans and demo- crate is that Cleveland is elected President, A New York Herald Bulletin Says BI © Has Probably Carried the State. 12:30 p. m.—The republican national committee claim that the full returns from New York elect Blaine by 6,500 majority in this state. The Herald, (12:30 p.m.) bulletin says Blaine has probably carried the state by 5,000. Gen. MeCook, of the United States Senate, who has been looking over the returns, says the state 1s in doubt and official returns may be necessary to decide the result. The Corrected Returns in New York City Give Cleveland 45,239 Majority. ‘The corrected returns in New York city give Cleveland 45,239, which is very nearly four thous- and from former returns, being seven thousand less on democratic figures and three thousand more on republican figures. ‘The Probabilities Still in Favor of leveland. The republicans telegraph from Indiana that they have the state by at least five thousand, which has caused great cheering at republican headquarters. The republicans give New Jer- sey and Connecticut to Cleveland, and his election, therefore, only depends on this state, which ts in doubt with the probabilities on actual vote for Cleveland. Democrats Claim California and Wis- consin. The national democratic committee have dis- Patches that California and Wisconsin have gone democratic. They do not admit a possibility of republican victory. Mr. Blaine and the Republican Com- mittee, 1:90 v. .—The through wire of Mr. Blaine ts con- nected with the national committee here, and a long conversation took place at one o'clock with him in Augusta, and one member of the committee sald to him: “We cannot say good morning, Mr, President, Dut we hope to say good evening, Mr. President.” rhe committee telegraphed him that New York tn doubt, but probably republican, and that Indiana and Virginia had gone republican, which would elect him without New York. Not much confidence is placed in Mahone’s claim of 8,000 re- publican majority in Virginia, but 1t is believed Indiana ts repubitcan.” ‘The Republicans Claim 1,300 Plural- ity, but the Drift of Opinion still Favors Cleveland. The New York republican state com mittee have returns from all but 12 counties, and estimating the latter they give Blaine 1,800 plurality in this state at 1:00 p.m. ‘The official count of the state ts generally regarded as necessary to settle the Fesult, though the drift of opinion still favors Cleveland’s election. awa —>—_— 5 HOPES AND FEARS AT ALBANY.
