You can see by glancing at the record that there have Deen a good many transactions during the week, infact an unusally large number. But they are mostly small sales.” “The fall season,” he resumed, “is just about be- ginning, and Texpect that, there will be a great eal of business “done. ‘The large demani of houses will naturally stimulate building, and the favorable outlook will encourage the investment of money.” At this point the dealer became absorbed In the mass of papers on his desk, and the reporter left to seek other opinions. ‘The experience as given above seemed to be a general one, and may be regarded as a descriptive Of the present condition of the real estate market. THREE HANDSOME HOUSES. Messrs. Dearing & Johnson, the well-known building contractors, have just fished for them- selves three handsome dwelling houses on 19th Street, near Connecticut avenue, which are models of compactness and neat workmanship. Each house has seven rooms, and 13 elevated from the street by a terrace covered witha bright green crop of grass. A stone stairway, with bronzed handrails, leads to the front door and entrance Way. ‘The tront and hall doors are of solld oak, tastefully carved, and the hallway and rooms on the ‘first floor’ are finished in hardwoods, mostly buiton wood, cherry, mahogany, and Oak. ‘The parlor, opening from. the wide hall doors ts long ‘and amply large. The Mantels are of cherry, and everything {3 neatly arranged with reference to comfoit and conveni- ence. The parlors connect with a dining-room on the same floor, in the rear, which 1s provided with adumb-waiter and a suit of closets, the dumb- waiter running froma the kitchen in the basement to the second story. The vestibule doors and tran- som lights are in stained glass. A convenient stairway leads from the side of the rear hall to the basement, which 1s most conventently sub- divided into fuel, furnace-room, kitchen and other Tooms. One of Graff & Co.’s blast furnaces is in each cellar. ‘The kitchen in the rear basement is entirely disconnected with the fuel and furnace room. "It 1s supplied with one of Hayward & Hut- ehinson’s cooking ranges, an fron’ sink Doller to supply hot water for tne rooms above. The statr- way leading from the hall to the second and third stories {s built of oak, square in form, with land- ings at easy distances. The second story has a large front chamber in hard wood finish, high cetl- ings in whjte plaster, with handsome center- pieces. ‘There 13 another large chamber in the Tear, with clothes presses, closets for bed or other clothing; also bath-rgom’ and the usual closets. In the third story 1s a large chamber in front, taking in the entire width of the lot. There ard closets for packing away linen and other clothing. The fronts present a picturesque appearance, be- ing laid in ornamental moulded brick work, with window sills of Ohio Sandstone. Each front has a gable end. BUILDING AND REAL ESTATE NOTES. Mr. H. F. THE MISFIT ‘To-day was set down for the arguments in the charge of criminal libel brought by Mra. Anna M. Boston, the colored school teacher, against Mra. Julia A. Powell, also colored. The charge was brought in consequence of a letter written by Mrs. Powell tojPublic School Trustee Brooks, Ing that Mrs. Boston was guilty of immoral jons and was untruthful, and was not a fit person to teach school The € the case was heard in the Police Court last Saturday, as reported at the time in Tue Star. This morning Mr. Wm. A. Cook appeared for the defendant, and Mr. Charles 8. Moore for the government. Judge Snell sald: “This case lacks the one element necessary to make out even a prima facte case. If the allega- tion contained in the letter had been made to any person except the trustees the case would have en different, It was the duty of the trustees to examine these charges, and that does away with the malice, and it would be entatiing unnecessary expense on the government to send the case to the id Jury; and if {tis done it will be done over my ad. The cage 1s dismissed.” ART AND EPIccrisM.—Among the various im- provements made in Washington during the sum- mner, few, if any, are more marked than those ob- servable'In the famous Aman restaurant on 9th street. The change is so great that but for the familiar faces to be seen on every hand even old habitues would scarcely know the place. ‘The front room has been newly painted, papered and decorated in handsome styie, and a number of new and very attractive pictures have been hung on its walls, though many of the old favorites have deen Kept in place. | Among, the former may be seen several fac simile reproductions of the best battle pieces and war scenes by the famous French artists, De Neuville and Detatile. The dining room in the’ rear has also been renovated and redeco- rated in handsome style, and other changes caicu- lated to adorn the establishment and add tothe pleasure and comfort of its patrons are to be no- Uced on all sides. ‘The gem of the place is, how- ever, the boudotr-like lttle court which has been created between the lunch counter and the main dining room. Here hangs, under a most ad- Fantageous light, a superb copy, by Armor, of Bouguerean's celgbrated master-piece, “Nymphs and Satyr,” now belonging to the Hoffman House, New York. It is the same size as the original, and 1s @ remarkably fine and faithful reproduction. Indeed, when it is considered that it was made by an artist who may be sald to be almost without technical training, and who worked also without opportunities for close and constant study of and comparison with the original, as 1s usually the case, It 13 really an extraordinary work, and one Well worth studying, whether one has seen the original or not. It 'ts not at all surprising that this painting 1s constantly surrounded by an ad- ring throng, and {t really forms nearly as great an attraction where it hangs as the orlginal Is to. the place of its owner in New York. —— Foxp’s Orgra Hovss.—One of the dramatic Gyents of the season will be the appearance of Marle Prescott, in the new play of “Belmont’s Bride,” on Monday evening and throughout the week. It 1s sald by competent Judges to be a very strong comedy, fully sutted to the wonderful emo- tonal powers of Miss Prescott, who 1s well remem- Dered in Washington for the fine support which she gave Salvini. ‘The scene of the play is Amer- ican, and located in Kentucky at the beginning of the war. The company appears to be an excellent one, Eben Plympton, who was the leading actor with the late Adelaide Nelison, being the principal support of Miss Prescott. Among the others are Lilford Arthur, Miss Lillian Andrews and William Davidge,jr. The play and company have attracted excellent audiences elsewhere, and canngt fall to Meet deserved success here. ee SMyRwa Carpets anp RvGs aT Avcriow.—Thos, Dowling will sell ats auction rooms, on Monday hext, a splendid assortment of Smyrna carpets and ‘rugs, comprising about 200 lots.
