INGERSOLL CLOSES AND THE DEFENSE SUBMIT THAIR CASE. Mr. Ingersoll continued his address after recess. He quoted figures snowing the amount of fines Imposed and the amount of remissions granted, to show, as he claimed, the absurdity of the charge that Brady was to get half of the remissions. Mr. Ingersoll said the prosecution had seeminz1 at there was nothing the matter wit! Dorsey's eyes. They had subponed Dr. n, but they had not dared to put alm on the stand. It seemed that nothing In the world would usty them but to see 8. W. Dorsey_ convicted, Ato put their foot upon his neck. They would enjoy that pleasure—they would never find © honest men to convict him. Referring to he charge that Dorsey had written the letter which appeared in the papers before the trial for the purpose of influencing public optnton, Mr, Tn- gersoil asked if the letter of the Attorney Genéral, published just before that, had been written for the purpose of biasing pubite apinton, Mi. MERRICK OBJECTED that there was no evidence of this letter, and Judge Wylie sald counsel could not re‘er to ft. “I'll take It back,” sald Mr. Ingersoll. “ Was Mr. Dickson Indicted to bias public opinion?” “T object to that also,” said Mr. Merrick, “Mr. Dickson was indicted by tho grand jury.” T have no objection to have tie Indictment. of the jury- men, and of those who sought to corrupt them, put in this record.” Judge Wyle said counsel could not refer to these matters, “J take tt for granted,” sald Mr. Ingersoll, “that the jury knows what has been going on'in this country.” THE DEFENSE SUBMIT THEIR CASE. Mr. Ingersoll closed a few minutes after three o'clock in a very eloquent peroration, and the defense submitted their case. The court then ad- Journed to Monday. — Not Contagions Cattle Disease. PNEUMONIA MISTAKEN FOR PLEURO-PNEUMONTA, Health Omcer Townshend and hts force for some days have been making a tour of the cow stables in the city and county, with a view of detect- Ing any cases of pleuro-pneumonta that may exist among the cattle, and particularly the mifch cows A cow that died sudden ly a few days ago, with all the symptoms of contagious pleurv-pneumania, was sent to the garbage Wharf on James creck canal, near the arsenal, where a postmortem ex- amination was performed about three o'clock yes- terday afternoon, by Health Oficer Townshend, and Drs. Salmon, Rove and Cowie, of the Bureau of Agricuiture. ‘rhe examination showed that the cow had died of ordinary pneumonia. ‘The doctors state that fortunately when a cow Is attacked with contagious pleuro-pneumonia her supply of milk ceasss, Yesterday the health officer and his assistants examined 102 cow stables and 370 cows In search of cases of pleuro-pneumonta, but without finding any cases which would exciteany alarm. They found several cases of pneumonta, but none con- tagious. To-day a well-known veterinary surgeon accompanted the health officer and his officers and 45 cases were examined, among, which were a number which had been reported by thelr owners as suspected cases of genuine pleuro-pneumonia. No genuine cases were round among these 43 cows, Through all .these stables examined yesterday ‘there Was only one sick cov, and this veterinary surgeon has gone out to-day to look at this cow, in the eastern section of the city, An analysis has been made of the milk of five of the cows belong- Ing to Mrs. Flannigan, on the Benning’s roaa, by Prof. DeSmeit, the result showing a pure and healthy miik”t every case, but not up to the standard for richness. ‘The health officer is keep ing up the investigation, but says that althoug! there are several clear cases of pneumonia, there are none of the Infectious kind and there is no cause for alarm atall There Is provably ‘a Uttle more sickness among cows, owing to the cold, backward season, than in ordinary years, but @ permanent turn to_warmer weather will cure all cases of the Kind. The Agricultural department is interesting itself in thts subject, and several of the professors are making analysis of the several specimens of the milk and meat of cows. —_s>___ TRANSFERS OF REAL Esrare.—Deeds in feo have been filed as follows: Mary S Clymer to W. Among his contracts has been one for the construction of a court-house at El Paso. Although Mr. Angus has enjoyed excellent healtt at El Paso, not having been sick a day during his twenty months’ absence, he still thinks Washington a more de- sirable place of residence. The country at El Paso 4s as bare of vegetation as a billiard table, and no drinkable water can be Obtained from the alkall soil. The water used comes from the Rlo Grande, and sellsfor five cents a bucket. As everything used there has to be transported by rall, the cost of suppiles 13 heavy. ITS PROGRESS—THB DREDGERS—THE TRAMWATS— THE RIF-RAF FOUNDATION FOR THE RIVER WALL, ETO. As the work progresses on the river flats the plans can more clearly be understood. Below the Long bridge two pile-drivers are at work on the Same line, one approaching the other, and when they meet the pfle-driving on the east will have been completed for the present. It is found that the mud below the Long bridge spreads out over much more surface than above the bridge, Where there is much more sand. It 18 thought that but ilttle more tramway work will be required below the bridge for this reason. The sand appears to have been. lodging many years on the flats above the bridge, while the lighter mat- ter has found lodgment south of it, Itis for this Teason that the dredging company are now con- structing another trataway north of the first one, and ata distance of about 138 yards from it. The nature of the deposits taken from these flats above che bridge ts so heavy and solid that wien dumped they settle where they fall without run- ning. In addition to the new tramway line, the contractors are making great preparations for tie erection of an Immense steam force pump, to be kept constantly playing on the sandy and'clayry deposits while itis being handled in order to make it ran more freely and diffuse itself. The pressure of this pump when completed will be 12) pounds toa square inch. ‘The water will be pumped from the Georgetown channel and carried through a six Inca Iron pipe along the tramway between the rats, and be 80 arranged as to supply water at every point needed on the line. THE DREDGING. ‘There are three dredging machines now at work above the bridge; one required to widen and deepen the Georgetown channel, th? mud from which ts carried by scows to the tramway, where another dredger removes the mud from the scows tothe cars, and tts then dumped along the line of the tramway. The capacity of this work 1s 216 car-loads per day, of ten ejuare yards of mud and eposit to each car-load. ‘The third dredge is an immense affatr, and ts now ensayed in dizging a Channel about twenty feet wide on the Ine where {he wall 1s to be coustructed, next ue river chan- nel 4A NOVEL PROCESS. Young cedar and pine trees and brush of all kinds are shipped in large quantities and placed on the decks of this dredger, where men are con- stantly employed in braiding these young trees into immense mats of the width of the channel, and as the dredzer advances on the line, the mat of young trees glide off into the channel thus cut }by the machine. Thts forms the foundation for the stone rip-rap work, and stone {s placed upon the brush, which sinks all together in a solid mass, making a basis for solid masonry work. The operation is quite an interesting one. The work is pr ing finely, but the night-work has been found to be unprofitabie, and has been dis- continued, Se ee THR NEW YORK STOCKMARK2T.
