It'ts thought that she may be fonud sultabie for surveying in the vicinity of the West Indies. WORK ON THE WASHINGTON MONUMENT DELAYED. The Lee marble company, of Massachusetts, were this year awarded the contract for furnishing marble for the Washington monument, Their first delivery was to have been by the4th of May; but owing, it 1s said, to the undeveloped condi- tion of the quarries, and the want of a suffictent plant of machinery, they were unable to make the shipment at the time, nor hag a block yet ar- rived. The joint commission of the monument decided rather than annul the contract to make an extension of time unul the Ist of June. When the work was resumet en the monument this sping there was sufficient marble on hand and cut to raise the monument thirty feet. ‘There 1s, terefore, enough 1ft to Jacrease the height to 870 feet. “Even If the first siiipmonts from the Lee quarries sould arrive by the Ist of June there would be a necessary delay in the work of raising the shaft, cau-e1 by the Ume taken to prepare the marble for s-tting. It was thought that the work would progress raptilly. for if the new marble hid arrive [in time there would have been a good sup- ply prepared ahead, and there would haye been no delay. Mr. Watter Evans, the new commissioner of Internal revenue, is expected to assume the dues of that one on Thursday morning next. He will arrive in Washington on Wednesday even- ing next. Mr. Ingersoll began this morning the sixth day of his address to the jury. He charged Mr. BI'ss with having made the statement that ex-Senator Dorsey was chairman of the Senate committee on post offices, when interested in the usual bust- ness, for the purpose of poisoning the minds of the Jury, either without knowing that the statement Was incorrect, or not caring anything about it. Mr. Ingersoll speaking of the aMdavits whose honesty 1s impugned, sald that he would show that the erasures and alterations were evidences of honesty Instead of a conspiracy. Mr. Ingersoll then proceeded to compare the aMfdavits on the Pueblo and Greenhorn route to show that the ratio of the second affidavit filed was less than that in the first. ‘The second affidavit, which was claimed as a fraud, greatly reduced the pay that would have been given if the order was based on the first. No motive, he claimed, but an honest one could have induced the making of the second aMidavit. He argued that it was absurd that John Dorsey had told different | men op the Bismarck route that he and his brother were In @ conspiracy. He attacked the calculations made by Mr. Bliss on the aMfdavits on the Pueblo and Rosita route, saying that in the case of two affidavits, in which the amount of money was precisely the same, Mr. Bliss had de- clared that it was twice as much In one as_in the other. He said the jury had seen and heard John W. Dorsey and knew whether to believe him. It was true Brady had accepted the affidavits of these interested parties as true. He besought the jury not to let suspicion and Prejudice influence them. He eloquently contended that there was a great deal of good in human nature, and yet they were all the time told to suspect something. BRADY HAD HIS OWN STANDARD, and when these men made aMdavits setting forth Practically what they would carry the mail for, he knew whether to accept it or not. He argued that the erasures and interlineations in the affidavits tended to show that the parties Were honest in their intentions. It was Just as easy to have aMfdavits without erasures as with them. Gullt was always conscious that it was guilt, Guilt would make no erasures, and would abnor blots. Innocence was negligent. ¢The man of honest Intentions was the one who did not care. The guilty man did not travel in the snow; he Wanted no tracks lett. He argued also that these papers would not have been leit on file, especially In view of the Congressional Investigation, If these parties were gullty. Yet no effort had been made to conceal one, though all these papers were abso- lutely in Gen. Brady’s power. Every suspicious auper could have been destroyed. He wanted to know if Brady would have left these suspicious pepers on file if they were dishonest, and he knew It. In reference to the question raised as to WHY DORSEY HAD KEPT RERDELL IN HIS EMPLOY after knowing his baseness, be sald that at that time the public mind was excited and unreason- able. At that time Rerdell, no matter how base he ‘was, could go before the grand jury and nave Dor- sey or any other public man indicted. What had become of Turner, Lilley, McGrew, upon whose oMctal reputations this man had breathed the breath of slander? Stephen W. Dorsey had wisely concluded, after Rerdell had gone to MacVeagh and James, to let him alone, He did not wish to be Indicted; he did not wish his reputation to be solled, and he let Rerdell alone. DORSEY'S BOOKS AND PAPERS. The notice to produce Dorsey’s books and pa- pers was given February 18th. Two days after- wards Rerdell went on the stand. What did they want the books and papers for? ‘To show to Rer- dell, for the purpose of eking out his testimony. He did not wint to depend on his memory. The defense was willing to take the responsibility of allowing the government to introduce secondary evidence. Then the court decited that the de- fense could not introduce the books afterwards. He (Mr. Ingersol!) had insisted that they had the right, but the court had decided they had not. JUDGE WYLIE, INTERRUPTING, SAID that no such offer was made, but the court had decided that the defense could not produce books after driving the prosecution to secondary evi- dence, Mr. Ingersoll, In the course of the Alscusston, said he would show that the court had refusea to let them produce the books after Rerdell left the stand, but Judge Wyile denied that he could show it Mr. Ingersoll -said he would look it up and show it by the record; if not, he would beg the court’s pardon. “A VERY LIVELY TERM OF COURT.” Mr. Ingersoll said that ithad been asked why the defense had not called Bosler. The govern- nent had summoned Bosler—had Issued an attach- ment for him and arrested him at midnight. Mr. Ker dented this, and said that Bosler had thrown an officer outof his house who went to subpoona him. watt Clerk, did you Issue an attachment for Mr, ler ?”.asked Mr. Ingersoll. do i not remember,” answered Mr. Williams, 2 cle “You can prove a thing by circumstances,” sald Mr. Ingersoll, “He was called here In court, and the next thing we heanl he had thrown a marshal out of his house.
