Torpey, the young Man who committed suicide a few days since by | Charles Coun i «Georgetown Negro’s FErightfal Crimes, A FARM7R MURDERED AND HIS WIFE OUTRAGED— ‘THE POLICE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR HIM Yesterday Chief of Polite Dye received a letter from Oakland, Md., stating that on the night of the 19th Instant, near Elkin’s, in that county, on the line of the Pittsburgjand West Virginia C. rail- road, a man, named Josiah Harding, was brutally rourdered tn bis own house and his wife ravished by a negro man known as John Smith, employed vy Adams & Kennedy, contractors upon satd road. After the act Smith escaped during the night from the Immediate Vicinity of the crime, and, when jast seen. was supposed to be making his way east- ward. He was formerly a resident of Georgetown, D. €., where his friends live. It is thought he will probably return there. DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSASSIN. Smith’s personal description ts given as fol- lows: Height, about five feet nine inches; stoutly wnd stronzly bulit, though without corpulancy or superiluity of Mesh; hair st ren close to head; face clean shaved, save a slight moustache; full face, and rather fine looking; color, light brown; is thoucht to have a scar somewhere on his fore- head, and has enormous feet, wearing No. 11 or 12 shoes, ‘HIS DOUBLE CRIME. It appears that last Tuesday evening Smith sat in the Hardens’ kitchen until he was ordered to leave. After being very impudent he left the house, but returned tn about half an hour. He went to the Window of the house and deliberately fired at Harden, who was sitting Inside preparing toretire. The ‘ball struck Harden on the upper left portion of the head, not penetrating the skull. Harden sprang to his feet, shouting, “None of that Smith!” and ran to the door. Here he was met by Smith, who fired the second shot, the ball entering and passing through Harden’s head, kiliing him instantly. ‘During the affray Mrs. Harden and a Miss Lee ran up stairs, Having killed Harden, Smith entered the house. blew out the lights and passed up stairs, seized Mrs. Harden and dragwod er down, Out of the house and outraged her. A DEATH-Bep Manrtae.—Miss Annie Renachere, a prominent society belle of Cleveland, Ohio, was engaged to be married to Mr. C. W. Seymour, the wedding being fixed for the present month. ' Six months ago the lady was taken {ll with a compll- cated disease and all hope of her recovery was abandoned. As the time approached that had been fixed for the marriage it was determined that nothing should be allowed to interfere with it. Hawktus, commitied suicide in Lawrenceburg, Ind., by taking morphine.
