Tux Stax office is connected with the Telephone Ex- change. Acvertisements, orders for the psper by mail and otherwise. news, or any information or business £20 be rent day or night, free of charge. ~ Persons eaving the city for the summer can have TRE Srax mailed to their address, postpaid, and changed as often as dexired, for fifty cents s month, invariably in = ‘Three Double-Sheets this Week.’ ‘Tue Stax will be issued in elght-page form on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of this week to meet the continued demand upon {ts columns for advertising space. On Saturday it printed 193 new advertisements, while the average for the month has exceeded one hundred per day tor every publication day. On Saturday the cireula- tion was 19,233 copies. oe ‘The select committee of the Senate on the im- provement of the river front of Washington, after @ thorough examination of the whole subject, have unanimously concluded in favor of the Abert- ‘Twining plan for the reclamation of the flats. opted by the engineer commission, y that devised by the late Major Twin- Ing, with some features recommended by Engineer Abert, and In the judgment of the committee tt Meets all the requirements of the case. Itis, in brief, to fill the flats with clean earth, first ex- tending a “sea wall” along the river channel in front of them, and to provide the low ground thus filled with ample subsoil drainage to keep it dry. ‘The land thus reclaimed to be converted into a park, planted with trees, shrubbery and grasses. The committee, not satisfied with their own judgment, took the opinions of numerous medical, sanitary and sefentific experts, all of whom approved this plan. The committee will Feport a bill, supported by an elaborate report, ‘very soon, and, backed as ft ts by the concurrent favorable opinions of engineers, physicians and sanitarians, there should be no room to doubt the passage of the measure. The importance of reliev- ing the Natfonal Capital of the baleful Influence of the flats has long been recognized and admitted in Congress. Members of both houses have gener- ally agreed that the only thing necessary to secure an appropriation for the reclamation of the flats ‘Was to present a plan forthe work which would command confidence. The Senate committee will submit a plain which has stood the test of the closest scientific scrutiny, and it 1s to be hoped that, Congress will act prompt!y upon it, that the ‘Work of reclaiming the flats may be commenced at ence. —__—__<«»+—____ The regular republican convention of Penn- sylvania is to be reassembled for the purpose of filling the vacancy on the ticket created by the @eclination of Mr, Marshall, nominee for Con- gressman-at-large. Inasmuch as the successor to Mr. Marshall has been virtually determined, {n advance, in the selection of a candidate by the Dosses and leaders, the necessity for the meeting f the convention, from a purely pfactical stand- Point, is not apparent. Nobody doubts that the action of the convention will be to confirm the selection made by the bosses. It 1s customary for State committees to fill vacancies on state tickets occurring after the adjournment of the convention making the ticket, but the party managers in Pennsylvania have, It seems, con- ¢lued not to follow this custom. Recalling the convention has the appearance of deferring to the Popular will, and just at present the Pennsyl- ¥ania leaders are not likely to omit any little point in the game they are playing. = ae ‘The news from the Cumberland coal re; Rot hopeful of any settlement of the differences Detween the striking miners and the employers. Meantime the latter have undertaken to master the strike by introducing a force of foreign la- borers, with a strong police force to protect them. ‘The business interests of Washington suffer so much from a cessation of coal mining operations in the Cumberland region, involving, as it does, a stoppage of traffic on the canal, that 1t would b® gratifying to have work resumed at the mines; but the striking miners have behaved so well thus far, and have shown so much self-respect as orderly citizens, that every body would be sorry to have them displaced by imported laborers, Sa Tux Stag has overcome the suggestions of the committce that contributions to the Garfield Monument shall be limited to one dollar. We will be glad to receive any amount from one cent upward. We are sure our people will give their full share towards this noble object. —___<4>___— Senator Don Cameron is a dashing warrior, but he is evidently not a chip of the paternal block in the matter of tact and sagacity. The old man Would never have been guilty of the blunder of threatening to oppose the tariff interests of Penn” sylvania in the Senate if the revolt against ma chine rule was persevered in. —_—___+e»______ ‘The star route thieves by their scurrilous abuse of the judges who are trying their casesare paying ‘the best tribute possible to the character of our courts. Any judge, prosecutor, or jury so unfor- tunate as to gain the praise of the thieves or their organs would at once be under suspicion by all honest men. ——_—__e»______ Every cent given to the Garfield Monument Is so much given to beautify and glorify the city of ‘Washington.
