Holiday Novelties. ‘WHAT TO BUY—WHERE TO BUY. Time was, many years ago, when you could not always get in Washington just what you wanted even in the holidays, but now there is hardly an article in any line whatever, from a pin toa thonsand dollar bronze, that can not be pur- len from the | Chased in this city. The Jewelry stores are fuji of the latest novelties in foreign and domestic goods; tie dry goods people have the newest patterns in plushes and silks; the china stores have the very last products of Limoges, Serves; and other furnaces of renown In Europe, and many of the best works from the potteries of Trenton, Greenpoint, Tarrytown, and Cincin- nati, in this country; the book stores have the latest publications. cards, illuminated menus and novelties; the other stores have fancy goods from Vienna, Paris, and London. just as fresh as you cansee them inthose cities this very day; there is a larger toy store here than in the city of New York; ladies lingerie is is plentiful and as novel and as rich as in northern states; millinery made here was copied and compli mented in New York last week; the clothing houses are models forany city, and so on through the chapter of the varied business in- terests. These facts impressed themselves on a Boston gentleinan yesterday who had not been in the city for ten years, and he came into THE Srar office and spoke of the wonderful change in his shopping experience. He had forgotten that these changes came with the rapid and beautiful growth of the Capital. Yesterday the stroll of Tae Star through the stores and shops became so interesting that it made nearly a column, and to-day it is hard to fay where to begin or leave off. At No. 719 Market space, however, Davis has a very elabor- ate stock and a handsome store, and a visit there will repay any one. The ladies will find hearly everything they require in the well as- sorted selections of fancy and millinery goods, trimmings, ete.; while for holiday there are many handsome and useful articles, such as pearl fans, neck wear in endless variety, satin goods, celluloid toilet sets, and so on throuch along list. He has no-special day for bargains, but has them every day. “The old woman in the window,” at 402 7th street, has long been familiar to passers-by: but she is really not needed to locate the long- tablished shoe house of Heilbrun.
